SUMMARY For a period of over 50 years, from his first visit to Palmyra in the 1920s until the late 1970s, Danish archaeologist Harald Ingholt carefully collected and curated a detailed archive of Palmyrene sculpture, architecture, and epigraphy. Containing approximately 2000 images, each archive sheet contains handwritten annotations on Palmyrene funerary art, transcribes and translates inscriptions, includes detailed observations on object style and dating, and provides bibliographical information for each sculpture. As such, this archive is a treasure trove of information on Palmyrene sculpture, architecture, and epigraphy. Moreover, Ingholt?s notes go beyond shedding light on the creation of these sculptures, and also provide rich information about their more recent histories: object biographies offer details on provenance, collection history, and excavation photography. In doing so, they offer unique insights into twentieth-century excavation, conservation, and collection practices. Since 1983, Ingholt?s archive has been housed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark, and then, from 2012 onwards, the archive took digital shape within the framework of the Palmyra Portrait Project at Aarhus University. Now available in print for the first time, the Ingholt Archive is here presented in its entirety as a lavishly illustrated four-volume set. The authors have transcribed and commented upon each sheet in the archive, provided new translations of the inscriptions that accompany the sculptures, and compiled an updated bibliography for each item. This unique set is published together with a detailed introduction, thirteen concordances, and a bibliography, making it an invaluable resource for researchers in the field.

Zeven jaar geleden gingen wij in op de vraag van de academische overheid van de KU Leuven en organiseerden wij een tentoonstelling ter herdenking van de vierhonderdvijtigste verjaring van Erasmus overlijden. Juan Luis Vives heeft nog meer dan Erasmus met de Nederlanden te maken. Zijn tussenkomst, via zijn mecenas Willem van Croy, is beslissend geweest bij de uiteindelijke aanvaarding van het Collegium Trilingue door de Leuvense Universiteit. Volgens Erasmus zelf verenigde hij alle kwaliteiten in zich om de naam van Erasmus in de schaduw te stellen. Vives is inderdaad uitgegroeid, naast Erasmus, Thomas More en Bude, tot een van de belangrijkste figuren van het Europese humanisme. Zijn politieke traktaten vallen op door hun filosofische diepgang: voor zijn originele denkbeelden op het gebied van de psychologie kreeg hij zijn ideeen op het gebied van de armenzorg werden spoedig richtinggevend bij het uittekenen van een sociaal beleid. Het was dan ook ondenkbaar dat de vijfhonderste verjaring van de geboorte van de grote Spaans-Nederlandse humanist in Vlaanderen, dat hij als zijn tweede vaderland beschouwde, onopgemerkt zou voorbijgaan.

What is the essence of a life? Which elements merit selection by a biographer? Which should be discreetly left out? To what extent can an intellectual?s thoughts and actions be captured in schemes and structures, without distorting or reducing the richness of a multifarious personality? These are the questions which underlie the contributions to the volume The Quintessence of Lives: Intellectual Biographies in the Low Countries presented to Jan Roegiers. More than twenty-five historians have written intellectual biographies of figures who created a ?second life? for themselves on paper. All persons discussed are firmly rooted in the intellectual life of the Low Countries and were active there between the sixteenth and the twentieth century. The volume is offered on the occasion of the retirement of Prof. Dr. Jan Roegiers as full professor at the K.U.Leuven. As head librarian and archivist, also in charge of the university?s art collections, Jan Roegiers played a pivotal role in collecting, preserving and making available the documentary and artistic inheritance of the University of Leuven. His main interest is in the intellectual and ecclesiastical history of the Low Countries in the Modern period, but his curiosity also made him venture far beyond the boundaries of the research group in which he was active as professor ordinarius. Whatever the topic, all his texts show how much he valued the craftmanship of historiography, his great consideration for the wider context which codetermines the acts and writings of committed intellectuals, and his relish for erudition. These same features are variously reflected in the biographical contributions in this volume. They illustrate how social and cultural trends in the surrounding environment affect the actual course of action chosen by individuals who helped shape the intellectual life of our region. Academically trained lay people and clerics, as well as academics from many disciplines are to be encountered here. The authors look at how they react to the Zeitgeist, how they often go against the current and leave their mark on a whole era; or how individuals who enjoyed the same education eventually go opposite ways and proclaim conflicting views. The book will be published in the series Bibliotheque de la Revue d?histoire ecclesiastique, in recognition of the important part Jan Roegiers has played these many years as director of this international academic journal, which has recently started a formal cooperation with Brepols Publishers. Hij heette eigenlijk Cornelis (Abts) van Kiele, en ondertekende documenten zelf met Cornelis van Kiel(e) of C. Kiel. Naar de gewoonte van zijn tijd werd zijn naam ook dikwijls gelatiniseerd tot Cornelius Kilianus. Deze variant werd uiteindelijk vernederlandst tot Cornelis Kiliaan, de naam waaronder hij vandaag nog bekend is.
