Il territorio africano ha prodotto antichissime civilt� e insieme feconde tradizioni religiose tanto tenaci da giungere fino ai nostri giorni come ben ci ricorda il Premio Nobel nigeriano per la letteratura Wole Soyinka. Ma ha anche conosciuto precoci e ripetuti incontri con grandi religioni dell'umanit� che sono provenute dall'esterno. Scorrendo dunque le oltre settanta voci di questo volume organizzate in ordine alfabetico incontriamo importanti definizioni dedicate alle religioni di origine propriamente africana di singole popolazioni o gruppi di popolazioni come i �Bantu� i �Berberi� gli �Igbo� i �Luba� i �Pigmei� fino a �Yoruba� e �Zulu�; grandi e articolati lemmi che trattano globalmente le tradizioni religiose del continente oppure delle sue diverse regioni; e ancora voci che illustrano la presenza e la penetrazione in Africa delle pi� diffuse religioni monoteistiche come il cristianesimo e l'islam. Accanto a esse trovano posto definizioni delle principali figure di entit� sovrumane e divine che sono oggetto di credenza senza dimenticare le biografie dei tanti profeti e fondatori di culti millenaristici e di Chiese indipendenti che hanno caratterizzato in modo del tutto peculiare la storia religiosa africana. Infine il Dizionario si sofferma sulle specifiche modalit� di espressione che nel continente hanno assunto fenomeni o concezioni universalmente diffusi nel mondo delle religioni come �Anima� �Maschere� �Musica� �Stregoneria� o �Teatro� accanto a fenomeni tipicamente ed esclusivamente africani come i �Culti di afflizione�. Nei Dizionari in cui � stata ricomposta l'Enciclopedia diretta da Eliade secondo un progetto da lui stesso promosso si possono trovare voci che pur riguardando in questo caso l'Africa sono gi� presenti in Dizionari tematici come quello del Rito dei Simboli delle Concezioni religiose ecc. Mentre nel presente volume non si trovano voci riguardanti l'ebraismo in Africa perch� ben espresse nel volume dedicato specificamente a questa religione. Curate dai principali esperti internazionali delle singole materie le voci del Dizionario delle religioni dell'Africa sono una indispensabile porta di accesso a un mondo solo apparentemente distante che merita di essere conosciuto e riconosciuto in tutta la sua ricchezza e variet�.
