The Skin
London & Sydney: Alvin Redman 1952. The head of the spine is bumped the fore- edge foxed the front end paper missing and the front hinge reinforced with acid free tape. There is also a bookseller's label on the front paste down Hall's Book Store cause for nostalgia to baby boomer Melbournians and finally pp. 140 to 154 are creased with varying severity. It's a printer's fault and none of it too awful. A clean tight copy but obviously used. Second impression. Translated from the Italian La Pelle by David Moore. of Curzio Malaparte's The Skin "begins in 1943 with Allied forces cementing their grip on the devastated city of Naples. The sometime Fascist and ever-resourceful Curzio Malaparte is working with the Americans as a liaison officer. He looks after Colonel Jack Hamilton "a Christian gentleman . . . an American in the noblest sense of the word" who speaks French and cites the classics and holds his nose as the two men tour the squalid streets of a city in ruins where liberation is only another word for desperation. Veterans of the disbanded Italian army beg for work. A rare specimen from the city's famous aquarium is served up at a ceremonial dinner for high Allied officers. Prostitution is rampant. The smell of death is everywhere. Subtle cynical evasive manipulative unnerving always astonishing Malaparte is a supreme artist of the unreliable both the product and the prophet of a world gone rotten to the core." publisher's blurb. The Skin
Boston. 1952. Houghton Mifflin. 1st American Edition. Wear leading to slight fraying at head and heel of spine and to bit worn corners. Pages show some general soiling. Sticker shadow to half title page with some bleed through to page facing title page where it appears a previous owners address sticker was removed. But the most significant flaw is at the final printed page where the book appears to have been opened too wide at one time leading to some cracking along the gutter. There appears to be evidence of glue residue along the gutter where repairs at been tried at one time. While the binding is still solid you can see through to the mull cheesecloth-like backing. No Dustjacket. Translated from the Italian by David Moore. 344 pages. hardcover. FROM THE PUBLISHER - THE SKIN is the savage account of the American occupation of Naples first European city to be liberated in World War II. Malapartes bestseller is the famous tale of the orgiastic riot of licentiousness debauchery and sensuality which took place when the conquered Italians men women and children long under the Fascist and Nazi boot hastened to prostitute themselves to their American conquerors the U.S. Army. inventory #40514 hardcover

Malaparte Curzio. Translated by David Moore.
THE VOLGA RISES IN EUROPE.
Edinburgh: Birlinn 281 pp 8vo 8 1/2" H. "During the summer of 1941 the Italian journalist and novelist Curzio Malaparte was the only front-line war correspondent in the whole of Russia. His account of events there is not unique for this reason alone: his astonishing eye for detail and intimate knowledge of the country lend his record a depth of understanding rarely found in other war reporting and his attention to the human dimension of the conflict reveals him to be a man of humanity and compassion. In this book he provides a peerless illustration of the human dimension of the Eastern Front. His ability to spot details is uncanny; his ability to build upon them to express the horror and absurdity of war is astonishing. Here you get a complete panorama of the front with views of civilians in their war-ravaged homes; soldiers readying themselves for battle; and graphic descriptions of the most furious combat of WWII. Expelled from the southern war zone on the orders of Goebbels in September 1941 Malaparte spent four months under house arrest before being sent to cover events in Finland. From there he reported the Siege of Leningrad - one of the seminal events played out on the Eastern Front. This dense all-encompassing often poetic chronicle leaves you speechless. It's literally one of a kind." Small wrinkle at top of spine light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling. Book Club. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.
