Rome reste encore la capitale et la metropole culturelles, mais deja se fait sentir a nouveau, dans le cadre du bilinguisme, l'influence de la langue et de la litterature grecques. Des developpements litteraire et religieux particuliers s'esquissent ici et la dans l'empire, en particulier en Afrique. A cote de la litterature technique des grammairiens et des antiquaires, on trouve les textes juridiques classiques (Paulus par ex. et Ulpien) qui seront determinants pour la suite. En complement et en contraste avec les ouvrages techniques, surgit la litterature chretienne : traduction de la Bible, Actes de martyrs, apologetique (Tertullien, Minucius Felix), theologie (Novatien et Cyprien), poesie (Commodien). Examining the various interactions of priests with religious women, Partners in Spirit traces the ways in which both viewed the cura, highlighting the fluidity of gender and authority within the medieval religious life. The Costuma d'Agen (customary laws of the Agenais, in south-west France) compiled in Occitan at various times in the thirteenth century and preserved in the Livre Juratoire, or swearing copy (Agen, Archives departementales de Lot-et-Garonne, MS 42), is here transcribed with an English translation on facing pages. An introduction and an index are included. Appendices provide the text of five chapters 'missing' from this manuscript, along with several pertinent charters from Agen and a fuller description of the Livre juratoire by Professor M. Alison Stones, University of Pittsburgh. The manuscript contains many colored illustrations and capitals. The Costume emphasizes the power of the local city council, which often seems to override that of the local count. The laws or customs written in the book deal with many topics including jurisdiction, citizenship and military duties, crime, property, civil and criminal procedure, the local wine and salt trades, and local feudal law. When viewed retrospectively, the period between the eleventh and the fifteenth centuries was a phase of European history that was characterized by a radical and fundamental media transformation. Before this time, the vast majority of the population had never encountered the written word in their day-to-day activities. From the beginning of the second millennium, however, texts began to appear in, and influence, almost every sphere of human life. Medieval written texts were subject to revision, copying, embellishments, and deletions; they were read silently and aloud, and they were recited in a variety of contexts. This CD-ROM and book, Transforming the Medieval World, presents these changes dynamically by linking texts and images from this period, and by providing detailed commentaries on each of them. The multimedia environment offered on the CD visualizes these textual transformations and illustrates the adaptability and dynamism of writing and its reception. The uses of writing in this early phase of intensive European literacy are analysed in eleven separate multimedia presentations, which are almost all based on research carried out by the Special Research Unit (SFB) between 1986 and 1999. The CD also contains an anthology of important essays, which provide the user with further reading materials, as well as a general bibliography. The book which accompanies the CD-ROM facilitates the use of the CD itself, and provides the various multimedia presentations in written format. As such, Transforming the Medieval World will be invaluable to both scholars and students interested in medieval literacy.

The Incipitarium lists alphabetically by their opening words all of the extant texts related to the study of Ovid from 400 to 1600. All known manuscript witnesses to the text as well as the early incunabula, modern printed editions and studies are provided. An appendix lists manuscripts which transmit glosses to the individual works. And a comprehensive bibliography of modern studies related to the study of Ovid in the Middle Ages is included in the introduction to the Incipitarium itself. The Incipitarium surveys 483 texts in manuscript and/or printed form and will be an essential research tool for all scholars working in the field of the classical tradition. Frank T.
