ORWELL George; pseudonym of BLAIR Eric Arthur:
BURMESE DAYS
London: Victor Gollancz. 1935. First UK edition first printing. First UK edition first printing. Original black cloth with green titles to the spine in dustwrapper. A very good copy the binding clean and square. The contents with a small ink name and date to the front free endpaper and some spotting to the text block edge. Complete with the rubbed and darkened dustwrapper which is a little nicked and chipped to the extremities resulting in small loss to the head of the spine. Correctly priced 7/6 net to the spine. The author's second book and first novel due to it being published in America by Harper and Brothers in October 1934. Only in June 1935 after numerous revisions to the "potentially libellous novel" did Victor Gollancz print 2500 copies of the UK first edition several months after he published Orwell's second novel A Clergyman's Daughter. The Gollancz first printing is a notable rarity in the original dustwrapper. Fenwick A.2c. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. ORWELL George.
Burmese Days.
London: Victor Gollancz 1935. Octavo. Original black cloth titles to spine in green. Boards lightly rubbed front hinge just splitting a very presentable copy. First UK edition first published in the US in the previous year first impression of Orwell's second book and first novel. Orwell's book the result of five years service as a police officer in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma 1922-7 was initially rejected by Gollancz amid concerns that this caustic critique of colonialism might be considered libellous to those portrayed so it was first published further afield in America. On its first publication in the UK as here with names changed to avoid libel cases the novel was well received at least among the literati with Cyril Connolly reviewing it in the New Statesman as "an admirable novel. It is a crisp fierce and almost boisterous attack on the Anglo-Indian. The author loves Burma he goes to great length to describe the vices of the Burmese and the horror of the climate but he loves it and nothing can palliate for him the presence of a handful of inefficient complacent public school types who make their living there. I liked it and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a spate of efficient indignation graphic description excellent narrative excitement and irony tempered with vitriol." ORWELL George.
Coming Up for Air.
London: Victor Gollancz Ltd 1939. In the exceptionally nice dust jacket one of the hardest of Orwell's novels to find thus Octavo. Original blue cloth title to spine in blue. With the dust jacket. Publisher's file copy with their inkstamp to front free endpaper and front panel of jacket. Spine slightly faded couple of spots to covers light foxing to edges; an excellent copy in the exceptionally nice crisp jacket spine panel with a faint mark and just very mildly toned. First edition first impression in the scarce dust jacket. This is one of the hardest of Orwell's novels to find in the dust jacket. One of only 2000 copies printed it was the last of Orwell's novels to bear the Gollancz imprint. Gollancz disapproved of the political aspects of the novel which included a parody of an LBC meeting and Orwell was in no doubt that "some of Gollancz's Communist friends have been at him to drop me" Dudley Edwards p. 289. However to Orwell''s surprise it was published without any major changes. Provenance: from the publisher's archive of Victor Gollancz 1893-1967 one of the revolutionary figures of 20th-century publishing. Everything about Gollancz was distinctive from his business practices - he flouted convention backed newcomers extravagantly and held unique sway over the Book Society choices - to the appearance of his books. The famous yellow jackets a collaborative design between Gollancz himself and the typographer Stanley Morison bristle with blurbs recommendations and reviews in black and magenta. Prior to its acquisition by Peter Harrington the archive was shelved together from first publication though occasionally moved from warehouse to warehouse over the decades. The copies were retained by Gollancz as "archive" or "file" copies and most are stamped in ink with rubber stamps usually on the front panel of the dust jacket the front free endpaper and the title page. Fenwick A7a. Ruth Dudley Edwards Victor Gollancz: A Biography 2012. London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, hardcover
