The Life and Death of William Wallis The Cobler of Glocester Together with some inquiring into the Mystery of Conventicleism
London: E Okes for William Whitwood 1670. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this scarce tract on Ralph Wallis a nonconformist pamphleteer known as 'the Cobler of Gloucester'. This tract appeared following the death of Wallis and focuses on Wallis' ideas and his pamphleteering. Wallis' biographer states to this work that 'His complexion was of a sunburnt gipsy colour and his skin was rough and tawny like singed bacon; his hair was brown and bristly upon his head but his locks were weather-turned like a barber's show periwig'. Despite his Nonconformist views Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Wallis was apprehended by the government following his dispersion of pamphlets and he was held in custody. He admitted authorship of the works but declared to be in religion 'a Christian' and so was released. His pamphlets were frequently of a scatological tone and featured entertaining anecdotes regarding clergymen whose names and addresses he knew. DNB This work is the ESTC no. R20134. Collated complete. Rebound in full cloth. This biography provides further insight into the political and religious turbulence of the seventeenth century. Rebound in a full cloth binding. Externally excellent with little to no shelfwear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages with just the odd spots to margins. Very Good E Okes for William Whitwood hardcover

THE LIVRE ROUGE; or The Red Book: being a list of secret pensions paid out of the public treasure of France: and containing characters of the persons pensioned anecdotes of their lives an account of their service. And observations tending to shew the reasons for which the pensions were granted. Translated from the eighth Paris edition
Dublin: Byrne 1790. First Irish Edition. 8vo pp. 160. Front hinge loose. Bound in rubbed and some worn leather backed paper boards paper lacking from front cover with some library stamps inside. A good copy for all that. Entirely printed in red. An English edition appeared the same year. See Tourneux Bibliographie de l'histoire de Paris pendant la revolution Francaise 3.13483; ESTC T108411 for the UK Edition; not in Martin-Waller or Saricks. The original French edition of this pretended to be the official list of pensioners published by the government. It was more likely issued to embarrass the ruling class portraying them as a group of loafers living off the work of the population burdened with taxes. It's appearance in England is an indication of the British Jacobean interest in the French goings on. The existence of a Dublin printing is especially strange given that the Irish working population spoke mostly Gaelic and this nasty work is not really aimed at the ruling class who were the subject of its satire. The British library Catalogue offers a possible attribution to Jean-Baptiste Martin Louis La Reynie de la Bruyere q.v. Querard 4.558-559. Byrne unknown books
