ANON [WHITEHEAD, Paul]
The State Dunces. Inscribed to Mr. Pope
London: W. Dickenson in Witch Street 1733. First Edition. Folio. 32.5cm. Disbound with slight residual crust of old calf to spine region. 18pp. Some old ink spots to title page which effectively comprises the front wrap strong and durable toning to the extremities of both outer wraps and a little internal thumbing otherwise clean and fresh woodcut head and tailpieces luxuriously wide margins. A very good long disbound example of a well-aimed piece of 18th century satire.<br /> <br /> A vastly Popean excoriating satire of the Whig government of the 1830's under Robert Walpole James Ralph William Stanhope as Secretary of State George Byng as First Lord of The Admiralty and a host of other aristocratic pillars of the British aristocratic system. Written in full flow as faux-Pope Whitehead with full reference to The Dunciad and wielding the righteous wrath of a breakfast table diplomat under full sail tears into the sitting government and bemoans with Pope how nothing has changed since the last crop of dunces. A successful part II was published in the same year and the two are often found bound together this copy comprises only part I. Whitehead's uncanny ability to ape Popean epic actually made him something of a living during the 1830's-40's allowing him to pen political and social satire like a Temu Alexander Pope but available at Witch Street prices. Foxon gives priority to this one which also contains 24 lines eliminated in the others. This was the poem that Whitehead sold for an advance of ten guineas provoking Johnson to demand the same for London in 1738. Foxon W426; ESTC T48572. W. Dickenson in Witch Street unknown

Anon After Wencelaus Hollar
Aula Veneris. Sive Varietas Foeminini Sexus diversarum Europae Nationum. The Court of Venus; or Varieties of the Female Sex of the Different Nations of Europe
1830. Full Straight-Grained Morocco. Very Good. An exquisite manuscript copy of plates from the 1644 work by Wencelaus Hollar. While a copy the pen-and-ink work here is absolutely exceptional requiring a loupe or magnifying glass to fully appreciate the niceties of detailing achieved by the artist copier. It is also clear that this copier did not merely trace the original work. Heightening the pen-and-ink work are touches of watercolor. 8vo. 173 by 117 mm. Unpaginated half-title page with a handwritten copy of the verse from "The Merchant of Venice entitled "The Folly of Fashion the Deceit of Ornament or Appearance" second title copied from the 1644 work followed by 36 mounted pen and ink copies of fashion etchings from the 1644 work and a final page with a drawing of a trophy and two musings written out. The drawings besides being meticulous with near-microscopic detail are austere with the pen and ink work heightened with only touches of flesh color for the women's faces and tiny dabs of gold for jewelry buttons and the like. The austerity we would stress is befitting the fashions represented as the early and mid-17th century was a time that garments tended to be more monochromatic and sober meant to suggest piety as any student of portraits from this era coincident with the Puritan Revolution and religious wars on the continent would have absorbed. And we would add the austerity is not just of the dress but also the expression on the women depicted here. The flesh color applied to the faces and also hands is just as nuanced as everything else about these portraits. There is a gradient of coloration capturing very realistically the actual pigment of human flesh. The one exception to the limited color usage is a depiction of a woman from Virginia a Native American whose bare garment is painted red and who is wearing jewelry that is captured with bolder applications of gold. This exotic specimen also shows a woman with a tattoo on her arms something that was completely alien from European cultures at the time. The Virginian is not the only non-European depicted however as there is a woman from Algiers a Moresco woman an Argentinian. Also shown is a Turkish woman and the dress shown is from different strata of the societies represented. Short cursive handwritten captions identify for us where the model is from. All the handwriting including on the title the poem etc. is rendered in a tight minute script. Unfortunately there is no indication who the artist copyist was other than the initials PC by several of the drawings. In the front there is an ownership inscription of an Elizabeth Cobbett. There is a watercolored bookplate with the Hillman family crest. unknown

Anon and B Disraeli
Uncle Tom in England Or a Proof that Black's White An Echo to the American 'Uncle Tom' and Venetia
London: Houlston and Stoneman 1852-3. Leather. Good. 6.5" by 4". None. Two interesting novels bound as one. The first Uncle Tom in England appears to be an english novel which draws a parallel to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The author is not attributed although to the rear there is an essay by anti-slavery campaigner and president of the British and Foreign anti-slavery society Thomas Clarkson. To the preface is written that the author has connected its plot to the work of Mrs Stowe and is therefore to be looked on as an Echo or sequel to 'Uncle Tom'. Several characters share their names with Stowe's. This is the third edition of Uncle Tom in England printed the same year as the first American edition. Uncle tom in England is an extremely scarce and unusual text. The second novel to this text is Benjamin Disraeli's novel Venetia. Venetia was originally released in 1837 and was published so as to form an income for Disraeli in a time of need. It is a romance based on the characters of Shelley and Byron. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart with heavy rubbing to spine and boards. Spine label and head and tail of spine are particularly rubbed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown 'John P Maitland Family Heriloom'. Another inscription to recto of front endpaper dated 1918. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Good Houlston and Stoneman hardcover

Anon from Gottfried Ehrenberg
Mounted Plates from Fortsetzung der mikrogeologischen Studien
London: Privately Published c1875. Leather. Good. 10" by 7.5". Not Stated. A mounted collection of plates taken from a work by Gottfried Ehrenberg. With a letter explaining the origin of this volume. Consisting of 30 photographic plates believed to be photographs of the original plates in the work by Ehrenberg. The letter explains that the negatives have been scrapped and that this mounted copy is the only one remaining to the original compiler. Fortsetzung der mikrogeologischen Studien from which the plates originate is a work by German naturalist and microscopist Christian Gottfriend Ehrenberg. It is considered to a continuation of Ehrenbergs great work Mikrogeologie focusing particularly on the Radiolarian collections from Barbados. For nearly 30 years Ehrenberg examined samples of water soil sediment and rocks and described thousands of new species. He was particularly interested in diatoms but also studied and named many species of Radiolaria foraminifera and dinoflagellates. After his death in 1876 Ehrenberg's collections of microscopic organisms were deposited in the Museum fur Naturkunde at the University of Berlin. The Ehrenburg collection includes 40000 microscope preparations 5000 raw samples 3000 pencil and ink drawings and nearly 1000 letters of correspondence. In a half morocco binding. Externally sound with some rubbing and bumping. Spine sunned with personalised spine label. Letter affixed to front pastedown explaining origin of the work. Internally firmly bound. Plates generally clean with shading from original photos Good Privately Published hardcover
