Located to the south of Berkeley Square Lansdown House is what remains of a mansion once occupied by three British Prime Ministers - William Pitt the Younger John Stuart and William Petty - William Waldorf Astor and Harry Gordon Selfridge before its partial demolition. One of the drawing rooms was removed and reinstalled at the Philadeplhia Museum of Art and the Dining Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.A limited edition with seven hundred and fifty copies produced only of which this is No. 105. Illustrated with one hundred and two plates including a handful in colour. Collated complete.Acquired from the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie an English socialite and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was featured by Cecil Beaton in 'The Book of Beauty'. Amongst her circle were Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Coco Chanel Salvador Dali Winston and Clementine Churchill and Nancy Mitford.A smart limited edition relating to the collection of an important mansion let to prominent figures in British society. ‎Illustrations to Butler's Hudibras Consisting of Sixty Portraits of Celebrated Political and Literary Characters Impostors and Enthusiasts Alluded to in that Work‎

A fascinating collection of portraits of characters alluded to in Samuel Butler's famous mock heroic poem Hudibras A very scarce suite of portraits which was first published for the 1819 edition of Hudibras with Grey's notes. This collection is lacking three plates Oliver Cromwell Joan of Arc and Martin Luther. With each plate by R Cooper. Cooper was an historical and portrait engraver. His work was prolific for many decades with his first work recorded in the Biographical Magazine of 1795. His contributions were mostly to the periodical press. The contents lists each portrait plate and lists the Part Canto and Line of Hudibras they are mentioned. Hudibras is a mock heroic poem written in the seventeenth century. It was a long narrative polemic upon the Roundheads Puritans Presbyterians and many more factions involved in the English Civil War. A popular satire the work tells the story of Sir Hudibras a Knight errant. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Externally generalyl smart. Rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spotting throughout heavier to the first and last few pages. ‎In Memory of John Dowel Whittle who was drowned off Cape Otway Bass St. N.W. 10 miles 7 a.m. 29th July 1852 aged 23 years.‎

‎Melbourne s.n. 1852. Broadside 210 x 150 mm printed on one side only text set within decorative border surrounding the heading and Psalm LXIX and with a fully contemporary annotation at top left 'P. & O. S. ""Chusan"" 1st arrival at Port Phillip'; in fine condition mounted on card and housed in a modern frame with handwritten note on the reverse: 'John Dowel Whittle 23 years fell overboard from S. S. Chusan first P. & O. steamer into Melbourne on 29th July 1852. He went overboard about 7 miles off Cape Otway about 7.00 am and could not be recovered'; the back is also annotated 'Ex Ingleton Collection'. A rare broadside printed in Melbourne during the first months of the Victorian gold rush. This is the Ingleton copy and is the only surviving example of this broadside we have been able to trace. According to contemporary reports in Melbourne newspapers the unfortunate Whittle was one of the ship's hands on the Chusan and was thrown from the main yard in a storm off Cape Otway. Who knows the young man may well have been contemplating jumping ship in Port Phillip in expectation of making his fortune on the diggings. This broadside is recorded in Ingleton Geoffrey C. A Catalogue of Select Books from the Ingleton Collection 7067 with the spelling Dowell for Dowel.    unknown‎

Born in Jaspur near Nainital. 1876 joined Muir Central College at Allahabad led by Augustus Harrison. Passed the Vakils Examination of the High Court in 1880 while an under-graduate and was enrolled as a Vakil on 21 December 1880. Practiced in Allahabad High Court. In 1896 the High Court raised him to the rank and status of Advocate. The distinction of Rai Bahadur was conferred on him in 1905. He was appointed a CIE in 1907. In 1909 he accepted a seat on the Bench of the Judicial Commissioners Court at Lucknow and in 1914 officiated as a Judge of the Allahabad High Court. Represented University in U. P. Legislative Council 1904; Judicial Commissioner Oudh 1909; Vice-Chairman U. P. Exhibition 1910-11; Owner of the largest private library in the Province; Nominated as an Additional Member Imperial Legislative Council 1915: resigned his seat in the U. P. Legislative Council 1915. In 1906 he became the first Indian Vice Chancellor of Allahabad University. He was reappointed to that office in 1912 and 1916. In 1916 he was named the founding Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University BHU. The Sir Sunder Lal Hospital of the Institute of Medical Sciences on the BHU campus is named in his honor.
