The first issue of this weekly journal bound here is No. CI which names who voted for against or abstained on the Commons motion to expel from Parleiament Mr. Wilkes editor of The North Briton and MP for Middlesex. This was a time when journals started to report and comment upon parliamentary debates. King George III ensured that the Commons voted in accordance with his wishes by the control he exercised over his ministers. In 1770 Chatham denounced the excessive and corrupt use of their powers by the Commons and brought foward a bill for Commons Reform. The Commons usurped the will of the people by acting in secret and in 1771 they issued a proclamation forbidding the publication of Commons debates. Printers of journals were arrested and the Lord Mayor was put in thrTower. The North Briton continued to report on debates and wrote inflammatory articles such as: "It was the wise custom of the ancient Egyptians immediately upon the death of any of their kings to appoint a day for deceased monarch's trial when they took a view of the transactions of his reign and according as these were found good or bad they consecrated his name to endless fame or doomed it to perpetual infamy. I have frequently thought that this posthumous kind of trial might be very properly employed against Prime Ministers". This annonymous author "Historicus" then proceededto present his version of the trial of the last Prime Minister The Duke of Grafton.

W Bingley hardcover
