Paris NP C1880 Une jolie lithographie coloriée à la main montrant deux garçons jouant à se battre, avec des épées en bois et des armures fabriquées à partir d'ustensiles de cuisine. D'autres garçons les regardent. Une chaussette sèche à l'arrière-plan. Une feuille attrayante, sous passe partout. Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autres exemplaires et ne pouvons pas identifier l'illustrateur. L'image a été collée (dans un album ?) et présente une petite perte sur le bord inférieur (cachée sous le passe partout). La taille de l'image est de 20cm x 30.5cm Le cadre est de 29.5cm x 41.5cm.

Paris Chez Onfroy 1780 Deux volumes en un, première édition. Un guide de l'état de la Grande-Bretagne d'un point de vue français. Le premier volume porte sur l'année 1780, le second sur l'année 1781. Il semblerait qu'il était prévu que ce soit une revue annuelle, mais si c'est le cas, cela ne semble pas s'être produit, car Worldcat n'enregistre que ces deux années. Reliure en plein cuir avec décoration dorée au dos. L'étiquette et un panneau de la dorure au dos ont été arrachés, laissant un peu de cuir, mais pas de surface (voir les photos). Le reste des planches est en bon état, légèrement bosselé. A l'intérieur, la signature d'un propriétaire figure sur la page de garde. Le reste est propre et bien rangé. Le demi-titre indique "Etat de l'Angleterre, pour l'année 1780". [viii], 178, [2] pages. Le premier volume est conforme à OCLC : 40428559. Il est suivi d'un autre demi-titre pour l'année 1781, et d'un second volume du livre. [viii], 199, [3] pages. Ce deuxième volume est conforme à OCLC : 630334412. Les deux volumes contiennent les informations détaillées dont les chercheurs ont besoin. Y compris les noms, les adresses, les grades, etc. Par exemple, il y a une liste des noms et adresses de tous les banquiers de Londres, les comptes du roi et de la cour, les noms des navires et des vaisseaux de la marine, etc. etc. Texte en français. 170 x 100 mm. <p>London: Sold by A. Becket . and R. Faulder 1779. Half-title 71 1 advert.pp. Bound into green gilt-lettered cloth. A very good or better copy.</p> <p>With contemporary manuscript annotations on two pages. First English edition of this American Revolution era political satire and bibliographical hoax.</p> <p>Anonymously written by Richard Tickell the text purports to publish the letters of Benjamin Franklin the “trading Ambassador†with de Sartine among others and various secret state papers. The sum of it all exposes France’s motives for aiding America and satirizes Benjamin Franklin’s activities in Paris.</p> <p>In the margins of p69 a brief indistinct sentence is scribbled. On p51 at the end of a “Franklin†letter this is written in a contemporary hand:</p> <p>"“What was the Effect strikethrough Consequence of all this silly indistinct word lined out flattery to our Ministers No-Body was concerned by it & our affairs went from bad to worse. Scarce was this Pamphlet out of the Press when Spain took part in the War & we lost indistinct word & Grenada British naval loss at the 1779 Battle of Grenada the combined Keels off Plymouth.â€"</p> <p>It seems unlikely that a reader writing marginalia in the spur of the moment would have struck out words and replaced them for their own private benefit. Of the subsequent revised editions that we examined none printed the above commentary.</p> <p>From the collection of Matt B. Jones who likely bought it from Goodspeed’s “1239†penciled beneath his bookplate. Michael Walsh wrote that Jones “chose things with the finest judgment. They always had to be in good condition; they had to be significant. A Matt Jones book in an American institution today is a book to be proud of….â€</p> <p>The Green Box went through multiple editions and became popular in both England and on the continent. 'Perspective'. Portfolio de manuscrits architecturaux français.
France: n/a 1900. Wonderful French architectural manuscript portfolio on 'Perspective'. This appears to be a student's own manuscript and sketches from an architectural or art course. All of the contents are dealing with perspective in different forms. Some are purely mathematical such as the design and sketches of cones and other shapes. Others are examples of sketches drawn in proper perspective. The portfolio contains a large number of loose leaves. Each aspect text in French has one or more illustrations following. Many but not all of the pages have pencilled numbers to the top edge. In total there are 48 pages of text and 64 pages of illustrations / diagrams. In fact there are a few more but we have only counted "significant" pages. The paper is a little darkened and there are a few very minor closed tears to the page edge. The folder has cracking to the spine edge and is darkened and at least one of the ties is still functioning. The front has a tipped on printed illustration with the title. An attractive and fascinating piece. 330 x 255 mm 13 x 10 inches. Magnifique portfolio de manuscrits architecturaux français sur 'Perspective'. Cela semble être le manuscrit d'un étudiant et des croquis d'un cours d'architecture ou d'art. Tous les contenus traitent de la perspective sous différentes formes. Certains sont purement mathématiques comme la conception et les croquis de cônes et d'autres formes. D'autres sont des exemples de croquis dessinés dans une perspective appropriée. Le dossier présente des fissures sur le bord de la colonne vertébrale et est assombri et au moins une des attaches fonctionne toujours. L'avant a une pointe sur l'illustration imprimée avec le titre. 1818 Alsatian folk art Taufschein with Pennsylvania-German ties chicken and egg motif
<p>Bas-Rhin Alsace France 1818. Broadside approx. 10½ × 8¼ inches. Ink manuscript on laid paper with red ink and pencil illustrations; watermark visible. Folded with creases light soiling irregular trimming and minor edge wear not affecting text or decoration; very good. Offered with: One-page German manuscript on matching laid paper with identical watermark also dated 1818. Folded with creases and a small perforation not affecting text; very good.</p> <p>Curious and crudely executed folk art this 1818 German-language taufschein baptismal certificate is decorated in ink and pencil. The text records the birth in “Diemringen†and baptism in “Rathsweiler†likely Ratzwiller a village near Diemringen in Bas-Rhin Alsace. Fitting the baptismal theme it features a chicken and egg motif symbolizing creation and new life. The opening lines in German transcription approximate read: “I’ve been baptized and registered The Book of Life includes me now My Father will love me eternally / And be merciful to His child / God surely knows me already for a long time / My name rests in His hand.â€</p> <p>Alternating lines circles and triangles frame the text in an abstract border with the chicken and egg motif placed prominently at the top. Square blocks of color in each corner may suggest a picture frame or reference the brass bosses found on elaborately bound 18th- and 19th-century Bibles.</p> <p>Accompanying the taufschein is a one-page untranslated German manuscript written on matching laid paper with an identical watermark also dated 1818. Both items appear to have originated in Bas-Rhin and were acquired together from an estate in Lancaster County Pennsylvania—an area of early German-speaking settlement. The family may have emigrated from Alsace after the post-Napoleonic upheaval of 1815 when widespread political and economic instability spurred migration.</p> <p>The watermark on both sheets is of the “Vryheyt†“Freedom†type used in Holland and later copied in England Sweden and the United States; see Churchill’s Watermarks in Paper nos. 79–108. The full watermark—visible on the illustrated sheet—depicts a lion holding a stave within a crowned circle possibly encircled by the motto “Pro Patria Eiusque Libertate.â€</p> unknown

A Large notched-out area to inner margin does not affect text short edge-tears else Very Good.</p> <p>Subscription circular announcing a gathering of Pittsburgh’s citizens and trustees appointing Gilbert Morgan the second chancellor of what is today the University of Pittsburgh. Interestingly the Board of Trustees pledged and sought funds from the public to “build up and sustain a School of General Science in Pittsburghâ€; “to meet the wants of a city like Pittsburgh and to place a thorough liberal education within the reach of all who might feel disposed to confer its blessings upon their childrenâ€; â€to endow professorships and “to purchase a Library and Chemical and Philosophical Apparatus.†</p> <p>“The University’s buildings along with most of its records and files were destroyed in a widespread 1845 fire that wiped out 20 square blocks of the most valuable part of Pittsburgh.†Wikipedia Unrecorded in OCLC.</p> unknown

The Schlaraffen as members were called were noted for their light-hearted fellowship and use of antiquated language here using “Nova Yorkia†instead of New York and pseudo-Medieval costume and regalia. The photograph shows the all-male group seated at tables with wine glasses and swords in a ballroom at the Hotel McAlpin in Herald Square. The members are wearing their club uniforms and regalia while their more splendidly dressed leaders stand at the dais.</p> unknown

Mailing folds; near fine.</p> <p>Advertising broadside for the Pennsylvania Industrial and Construction Exposition held at the Farm Show Building in the state capital. Attendees of the six-day construction trade show were urged to “Join Pennsylvania on Parade†to view such exhibits as the “World’s Largest Model Railroad Layout†“Stars of Stage Screen TV and Radio†and “25 Bands…Pennsylvania’s Finestâ€. As an added attraction a six room house was to be given away.</p> unknown

Hand coloured lithograph. 18.8 x 28.8 cm dimensions of the engraving 38.6 x 29.2 cm dimensions of the sheet. A large hand coloured broadside against the revolutions of 1848. Denys Auguste Affre Archbishop of Paris believed that his presence could help to bring peace to the barricades in 1848. He had started speaking when the gunfire began again and he was hit by a stray bullet. He died the following day. The BnF have the only copy we can find Reference is ark:/12148/cb38793121h. Il avait commencé à prendre la parole lorsque les coups de feu reprirent et qu'il fut touché par une balle perdue. Il mourut le lendemain. A beautiful Japanese family photograph album
Japan: S.P. C1917. A beautiful Japanese family photograph album. Contains 38 photographs mainly silver gelatin including 4 CDV's and a couple of sepia and five photograph postcards. The curious feature of this album is that although it primarily follows the same Japanese family from Circa 1905-1917 the postcards that are tipped in have annotations in French and include Vietnam and Burma. A lot of the focus of the photographs is on the traditional dress of the women and you can see the transition from the kimono through to the modern woman about town. There are also two newspaper cuttings in French one on Japanese fashions and one on Japanese haircuts. Our personal favourite photograph is a rather grumpy looking old man in traditional costume. He is sitting for a formal celebration of longevity. On his chest are kanji characters: å…«åå… â€” meaning "86 years old" and to his side is a figurine which celebrates 86 years of life. The birthday boy doesn't look terribly pleased with the idea! The album is 23cm x 16cm. To the front cover is a colour photo postcard of a woman leafing through a photograph album. An annotation in French is dated 1917. "Cochinchinе Saïgon le 25 avril 1917" There is also a piece of kimono material tipped onto the cover. The album is now covered in protective plastic. There photographs vary in size. Quite a few are studio shots of individuals and the family. A lovely example of the genre. . Un magnifique album de photos de famille japonais. Il contient 38 photographies principalement des tirages à la gélatine d'argent dont 4 CDV et quelques clichés sépia ainsi que cinq cartes postales photographiques. La particularité de cet album réside dans le fait que bien qu'il retrace principalement l'histoire d'une même famille japonaise de 1905 à 1917 environ les cartes postales qui y sont collées comportent des annotations en français et font référence au Vietnam et à la Birmanie. Les photographies mettent souvent l'accent sur les tenues traditionnelles des femmes et l'on peut y observer la transition du kimono vers la femme moderne en ville. L'album contient également deux coupures de presse en français l'une sur la mode japonaise et l'autre sur les coupes de cheveux japonaises. Notre photo préférée est celle d'un vieil homme à l'air plutôt renfrogné vêtu d'un costume traditionnel. L'album mesure 23 cm x 16 cm. Sur la couverture figure une carte postale en couleur représentant une femme feuilletant un album photo. Un morceau de tissu de kimono est également collé sur la couverture. L'album est désormais recouvert d'un film plastique protecteur. Les photos sont de tailles variées. Bon nombre d'entre elles sont des clichés pris en studio représentant des personnes seules ou la famille. Un très bel exemple du genre. S.P. unknown

S.D.: S.P. A nice collection of French wine labels dating from 1906 to 1948 with the majority in the 1930s and 1940s. The 45 counted are the front label of each bottle. There are also a number of smaller date labels / collars that accompany the labels but haven't been included in the total. All are French and in good clean unused condition. . Une belle collection d'étiquettes de vins français datant de 1906 à 1948 dont la majorité provient des années 1930 et 1940. Les 45 étiquettes comptées sont les étiquettes frontales de chaque bouteille. Il existe également un certain nombre d'étiquettes/colliers de date plus petits qui accompagnent les étiquettes mais qui n'ont pas été inclus dans le total. Davis on various page; a good sound copy.</p> <p>A rare account of the murder of Francis Shitz the publishers proclaiming: “Among the many dreadful murders and assasinations with the history and trial of which a considerable portion of the work just spoken of is taken up there are few if any which appear to have been more cruelly and deliberately contrived than the bloody deed which will be detailed in the following sheets.†p3 McDade writes that the “will of Peter Shitz left most of his estate to his sons Francis and Peter but if they died without children part went to his daughter Elizabeth. Hauer was the husband of Elizabeth and he hired four Irishmen newly arrived in the country to kill his brothers-in-law. Landscape album 246 by 307mm 9¾ by 12 inches. 4 blank leaves 2 titles printed in red and black. 28 black and white silver gelatin prints 193x245 mm mounted on 14 leaves. A further 4 leaves of blanks to the rear. Full morocco binding titled in gold on the first cover in a double frame of gilt fillets ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets gilt fillets on the cuts interior border highlighted with gilt fillets binding signed Sangorski & Sutcliffe London. A little bumping to the corners. Slight handling to the binding only. An inscription has been scratched away on a front end paper. Still a lovely copy. The first 14 photos document the visit of Princess Margaret who was then 24 years old the next 6 photos concern the Princess and the Duke of Gloucester the last 8 photos the Duchess of Kent Princess Marina and her eldest son Now Prince Edward Duke of Kent. Single album or produced in a very few copies. Although this is a private collection the indications are that it was produced by press photographers from the Daily Mail. To the title page the address is Northcliffe House London. EC4 - which was the headquarters of the Daily Mail at the time. A couple of the photographs can be identified as being used in the press at the time. Also identified in the pictures are Philip Rosenthal of Rosenthal Porzellan Germany. A sketchbook containing original pencil ink and charcoal sketches
1884. A beautiful sketch book by an unknown French artist. This contains sketches of landscapes of Northern France. Also ships and parts of ships and ink portraits of gentlemen. The landscapes is often around St. Malo. These include Paramé and Saint-Servan-sur-Mer in Ile-et-Vilaine and Granville in Manche. All skillfully executed in pencil ink or charcoal. In total there are 13 pages of landscapes 13 of portraits 12 of ships and boats and 4 other sketches. There are also a few others not significant. All drawn between 1884 and 1900 - these are created by a skilled hand. There is a poem dedicated to 'Justine' with ends with the author / artist's name Louis de Crèvecoeur. 105 x 170 mm 4¼ x 6¾ inches. Un beau carnet de croquis d'un artiste français inconnu. Il contient des croquis de paysages du nord de la France. On y trouve également des bateaux et des parties de bateaux ainsi que des portraits à l'encre de gentilshommes. Les paysages sont souvent situés autour de Saint-Malo. Ils incluent Paramé et Saint-Servan-sur-Mer en Ile-et-Vilaine et Granville dans la Manche. Tous sont habilement exécutés au crayon à l'encre ou au fusain. Au total il y a 13 pages de paysages 13 de portraits 12 de navires et de bateaux et 4 autres croquis. Original blue cloth boards with ornate black stamping and a color-illustrated paste-on portrait of a noblewoman. 1881 gift inscription on ffep. Residue of Victorian-era children's stickers on front pastedown and ffep. Pages show a few small spots of minor soiling. 11 illustrated plates including frontispiece. 92 pp. 6 x 4 inches. Rare. One copy located on OCLC at the Library of Congress. A tale of seafaring adventure. Harold a boy of sixteen boards a ship in New York to sail for Liverpool where he'll meet his family. After some rough weather the ship becomes embroiled in mutiny. Harold Captain Wales and couple other men are set adrift in a quarter boat to fend for themselves. After drifting for several days and beginning to despair of their prospects for survival they are picked up by a whaler headed to the Arctic. Eventually they make port in Reykjavik and board another ship to continue on their way to England arriving in London on Christmas Eve. Dodd, Mead and Company hardcover

France: N/A 1850. A beautifully executed water colour of a forest scene with two women gathering herbs in the middle ground. Signed indistinctly we have been unable to identify the signature but have attached a photograph of this in close up. The painting is in excellent condition. Clean and tidy without any marks Under a slightly darkened and slightly marked card Passepartout. The hidden edges of the painting show the workings of the artist nicely. Blank and clean to the verso. Although it has not been identified the painting is French and dates from the mid-19th century. The painting is 21cm x 34cm. The card surround is 35cm x 47.5cm. . Une aquarelle magnifiquement exécutée d'une scène de forêt avec deux femmes cueillant des herbes au centre. Signée de façon indistincte nous n'avons pas été en mesure d'identifier la signature mais vous trouverez ci-joint une photographie de celle-ci en gros plan. Le tableau est en excellent état. Propre et net sans aucune marque sous une carte Passepartout légèrement assombrie et légèrement marquée. Les bords cachés du tableau montrent bien le travail de l'artiste. Le verso est vierge et propre. Bien qu'elle ne soit pas identifiée la peinture est française et date du milieu du XIXe siècle. Le tableau mesure 21 cm x 34 cm. A woman whose clothing is slipping away is leaning against a soldier where the other characters leer at her. A skilled original caricature. In excellent condition bar a very slight stain to the right edge of the sheet not affecting illustration. Held under glass in a small frame. The artwork is 8cm x 11cm. The frame is 13cm x 15cm. . Anhée Wallonia Belgium: Abbaye de Maradsous 1885. First edition. Complete. A collection of 20 large albumen photographs laid onto backing card with description of each printed to the bottom edge showing the Abbaye de Maredsous and the Ecole Abbataile. These are held in a red clamshell box with black and gilt decoration crest and titles. The box has significant fading / spotting from damp but is still holding well and has done its job of protecting the photographs inside. The photographs are of high quality and show the building of the abbey and the new school there. They are dated by the fact that the school was founded in 1881 earliest date and that the the Abbey was completed in 1892 but in these images is still some way off completion. Interesting architectural prints but also of the students and staff at the school both being educated and relaxing. A very nice collection. Images are mostly 17cm x 24cm and backing cards are 25cm x 32cm. Box is 35cm x 27cm. Abbaye de Maradsous unknown

Paris / Lille: Société de Saint-Augustin 1888. First edition. An unusual work telling the story of the Roman Catholic Missions to Africa. A large book. Soft covers bound in vellum with black printed titles and designs to the front and rear covers. The vellum is still and a little cracked with age and there is a small hole to the spine edge. It seems a very luxurious way to bind a book in the late nineteenth century! The book blok is seperate from the vellum binding - but it may always have been more of a folder / portfolio as there is no sign of it having been attached to the inside of the vellum. The binding of the book block is fragile and although it is just holding together it is a little loose. The first page is a chromo-lithographed title with gilt decoration in the style of a medieval work. The Jesuits monogram is to the centre of the design. There is a closed tear to the bottom edge. There are then 148 pages bordered in red floral design. Full of illustrations. These mark the history of Christian missions in Africa from the flight of the holy family to the late nineteenth century. Engravings steels in black and white and sepia throughout. Some in green colour. An attractive rather fragile work with light intermittent foxing. We can find only one other copy in its original binding. This was one of four works dealing with Africa Asia America and Oceania each complete in themselves. 38cm x 27cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 7635132. The Société de Saint-Augustin was in fact a publishing arm of Desclée de Brouwer & Cie. This was a publishing house active in the late 19th century known for producing Catholic literature and missionary works. . Première édition. Un ouvrage inhabituel racontant l'histoire des missions catholiques romaines en Afrique. Un grand livre. Couvertures souples reliées en vélin avec titres et motifs imprimés en noir sur les couvertures avant et arrière. Le vélin est encore et un peu craquelé par l'âge et il y a un petit trou sur le bord du dos. Cela semble être une façon très luxueuse de relier un livre à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle ! Le corps d'ouvrage est séparé de la reliure en vélin - mais il se peut qu'il ait toujours été davantage un dossier ou un portefeuille car il n'y a aucune trace d'attachement à l'intérieur du vélin. La reliure du corps d'ouvrage est fragile et bien qu'elle tienne à peine elle est un peu lâche. La première page est un titre chromo-lithographié avec une décoration dorée dans le style d'un ouvrage médiéval. Le monogramme des Jésuites se trouve au centre du dessin. Il y a une déchirure fermée sur le bord inférieur. Il y a ensuite 148 pages bordées d'un motif floral rouge. Les illustrations sont nombreuses. Celles-ci retracent l'histoire des missions chrétiennes en Afrique depuis la fuite de la sainte famille jusqu'à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle. Gravures aciers en noir et blanc et en sépia tout au long de l'ouvrage. Certaines sont en vert. Ouvrage attrayant plutôt fragile avec de légères rousseurs intermittentes. Nous n'avons trouvé qu'un seul autre exemplaire dans sa reliure d'origine. Il s'agit de l'un des quatre ouvrages traitant de l'Afrique de l'Asie de l'Amérique et de l'Océanie chacun étant complet en soi. 38cm x 27cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 7635132. Quarter green cloth with original pale yellow silk-patterned paper covered boards; dark blue endpapers; all edges gilt. Album with engraved title leaf with vignette illustration. Album re-backed with green cloth; new cloth reinforced hinges; rubbing to edges of boards; scattered foxing; very good.</p> <p>Unusual handwritten American astrological album dated 1837 containing detailed horoscope readings hand-drawn star charts predictive portrait drawings dream interpretations and lottery number advice. </p> <p>The manuscript records two full horoscope readings: an extensive analysis of Robert H. Gould not yet twenty-one and a separate “Lady’s Horoscope†for a woman apparently born in 1810. Each section is accompanied by a hand-drawn astrological chart mapping the celestial signs governing the subject’s birth with the individuals consistently described as “natives.â€</p> <p>Gould’s horoscope is notably elaborate forecasting marriage career prospects travel to the southern United States and Mexico “In 7 years you will be in the South you will be Rich in Mexico and in the Southern States†longevity and specific advice on favorable days of action. It also provides recommended lottery numbers and predictions concerning children prosperity and personal relationships. The album includes pen-and-ink portraits depicting Gould at age twenty-one figures said to influence his future and a child identified as one of his sons.</p> <p>The lady’s horoscope offers comparable predictions including marriage faithfulness personal fortune bodily injury and death and is illustrated with drawings of her future husband or sincere friend.</p> <p>Written with confident authority the compiler explicitly distinguishes his interpretations from contemporary printed dream books suggesting familiarity with popular astrological and oneiric literature of the period. An exceptionally rare survival documenting antebellum astrology and popular belief in the United States.</p> <p>Note. 1. MDCCLVI. 1756. half-title 23 1 pages. 8vo. “The Second Edition.†In fact the First American Edition preceded by printings in London and York both dated 1755. Expertly washed conserved and stitching renewed; scattered staining. A very good copy housed In a custom cloth clamshell box with a gilt-stamped leather spine label.</p> <p>Partly-untrimmed. First American edition of this eyewitness account of this terrible disaster on All Saints Day November 1 1755 that shook perspective views in the Old World and the New. The Lisbon Earthquake alarmed New England clergy and perplexed philosophers in France. For the former some ministers interpreted the event to show God expressing his angry will. For the latter some thinkers saw the disaster as evidence that no such will existed.</p> <p>The Lisbon Earthquake is estimated to have been 8.5–9.0 magnitude on the Richter scale and lt triggered a tsunami. The devastation was enormous:</p> <p>"“Not long after…a general Panic was raised from a Crowd of People’s running from the Waterside all crying out the Sea was pouring in and would certainly overwhelm the City. This new Alarm created such Horrors in the agitated Minds of the Populace that vast Numbers of them ran screaming into the ruinated City again where a fresh Shock of the Earthquake immediately following many of them were buried in the Ruins of falling Houses. This Alarm was however not entirely without Foundation. For the Water of the River rose at once above twenty Feet perpendicular and subsided again to its natural Pitch in less than a Minute’s time.â€"</p> <p>From the Rev. Thomas Prince to John Winthrop in to Voltaire to Rousseau —the intellectual luminaries of the world weighed in. Years later Goethe would write in his autobiography of his memory as a six-year old of the event: “Perhaps the Demon of Fear had never so speedily and powerfully diffused his terror over the earth.â€</p> <p>The earthquake was the “subject of anxious Church sermons across the Atlantic in New England. In fact an earthquake had also occurred in Massachusetts on the 18th of November 1755 centered east of Cape Ann. In Boston most of the damage occurred where buildings had been constructed over landfill near the wharves. John Adams who was at Braintree wrote in his diary: ‘The house seemed to rock and reel and crack as if it would fall in ruins…’†Kenneth Maxwell</p> <p>The Lisbon and Boston earthquakes became in tandem seismic cultural events as ministers philosophers and scientists contextualized one to the other. Some ministers compared the heavy damage of the Lisbon quake to the minimal damage from Boston’s and drew conclusions of moral American exceptionalism. Others used the Lisbon earthquake’s date of All Saint’s Day to suggest that God was punishing the Catholics. At Harvard professor and astronomer-scientist John Winthrop blamed volcanoes. </p> <p>By and large An Account of the Late Dreadful Earthquake and Fire… is written from neither a secular nor philosophical viewpoint. Rather it is a richly-detailed moment by moment account. It is a linear timeline written by an eyewitness who was literally on the shaky ground —when and where the dramatic event transpired.</p> <p>Charles Edwin Clark’s “Science Reason and an Angry God: The Literature of an Earthquake†in The New England Quarterly describes this narrow field of literature of the New England earthquake of 1755 —from the sermons to accounts such as the present example— as documenting a “science struggling to be born; a vigorous aggressive Protestantism on its way to becoming humanized and rationalized; a continuing consciousness of the uniqueness and special mission of America; and a scholarly approach in the best Puritan tradition to the problems of this world and the next.†Clark also provides an excellent and granular timeline of Boston’s printing and publication history concerning these two earthquakes.</p> <p>The verso of the half-title has an advertisement for the Boston edition of the Indian captivity of William and Elizabeth Fleming which is worth quoting at length: “A NARRATIVE of the Sufferings and surprizing Deliverances of William and Elizabeth Fleming Howes F-183 who were taken captive by Capt. Jakob Commander of the Indians who lately made the incursions on the frontiers of Pennsylvania as related by themselves. A NARRATIVE necessary to be read by all who are going in the Expedition The Kittanning Expedition a.k.a. the Armstrong Expedition as well as every British subject. Wherein it fully appears that the Barbarities of the Indians is owing to the French and chiefly their Priests. Price six Coppers.†After Braddock’s Defeat Capt. Jacob had terrorized the Pennsylvania population until a force armed Pennsylvanians killed Jacobs September 8 1756 in an retaliatory raid. The reader of this pamphlet would not have known of Jacob’s death because according to Clark it was published on April 1 1756.</p> <p>Evans 7602. ESTC W10073. Howes L-371 ref. A scarcely recorded account of the Siege of Plymouth by the Royalists in the Civil War locally published in the bicentennial year of the bloodiest episode in the city's history. Although the source documents on which the narrative is based are not explicitly stated it seems likely that the diary of John Syms Puritan naval chaplain and librarian was one of them. Having refused to surrender to the Royalists the citizenry of Plymouth signed a solemn covenant to fight to the last man; although poorly armed the defenders managed to overcome a formidable attacking force commanded by Sir Richard Grenville. The town held out for the next four years until the Parliamentary army finally prevailed over the Royalists. With the death of Cromwell in 1658 and the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 however retribution was exacted by King Charles II against the leaders of the Plymouth resistance many of whom were imprisoned. Nepal C1890. An attractive hand painted original Thangka Mandala. Either Nepalese or Tibetan. This is an unusual copy as it includes a representation of the black buddha to the left edge. Painted onto cloth and in excellent condition. Thangka painting is a traditional form of Tibetan Buddhist art typically created on cotton or silk. These paintings often depict Buddhist deities scenes from the life of the Buddha mandalas or other religious icons. Arrival of Daniël Raap in Hell
Northern Netherlands: N/P 1754. First edition. A scarce engraving by an unknown engraver from 1754. It shows the arrival of Daniël Raap in Hell. A caricature on the death of the merchant and Orangist Daniël Raap on 15 January 1754 in Amsterdam. Raap with his ally Teepken in hell standing before the Devil on his throne. Details in the image numbered 1-5 but there is no legend. tipped onto a paper sheet and held under passe partout. We cannot find any other copies of this for sale and the only copy we can locate is in the Rijksmuseum RP-P-OB-84.474 also with no legend. engraved area is 21cm x 31cm. Sheet is 25cm x 34cm. Passe partout is 35cm x 50cm. The sheet is a little darkened and has a closed tear to one edge not affecting engraved area. The title is added in Dutch in manuscript to the bottom right and the number 114 to the bottom left. Small area of loss to the top edge of border hidden by passe partout. A scarce item. Daniel Raap 1703–1754 was a Dutch porcelain merchant from Amsterdam who played a significant role during the Orangist revolution in the Netherlands between 1747 and 1751. He was known for his agitation against the ruling Regent class advocating for greater public influence in government and supporting the restoration of the stadtholderate under William IV Prince of Orange. Raap along with other activists published pamphlets demanding democratic reforms and hereditary stadtholder rule. He organized petitions and called for the direct election of militia captains the restoration of guild privileges and auctioning of vacant public offices. His activities led to William IV intervening in Dutch politics but when the new city government remained dominated by the traditional regent families Raap found himself at odds with both more radical democrats and Orangists. By the time of his death Raap's former popularity had turned to hostility; riots occurred at his funeral and his coffin was even destroyed by a mob. Première édition. L'image a été collée sur une feuille de papier et conservée sous passe partout. Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autres copies de ce tableau à vendre et la seule copie que nous avons pu localiser se trouve au Rijksmuseum RP-P-OB-84.474 également sans légende. La surface gravée est de 21cm x 31cm. La feuille mesure 25 cm x 34 cm. Passe partout mesure 35 cm x 50 cm. La feuille est un peu assombrie et présente une déchirure fermée sur un bord qui n'affecte pas la zone gravée. Le titre est ajouté en néerlandais dans le manuscrit en bas à droite et le numéro 114 en bas à gauche. Petite zone de perte au bord supérieur de la bordure cachée par un passe-partout. Une pièce rare. Daniel Raap 1703-1754 était un marchand de porcelaine néerlandais d'Amsterdam qui a joué un rôle important pendant la révolution orangiste aux Pays-Bas entre 1747 et 1751. Il était connu pour son agitation contre la classe régente au pouvoir prônant une plus grande influence du public dans le gouvernement et soutenant la restauration du stadtholderat sous Guillaume IV prince d'Orange. Avec d'autres activistes Raap a publié des pamphlets réclamant des réformes démocratiques et le règne héréditaire du stadtholder. First edition and “Printed by Order of the Society.†Original printed wraps are darkened; general creases and soft fold lines from mailing and handling. bjcb 352231</p> <p>Entirely in verse West Point Life: An Anonymous Communication Read Before a Public Meeting of the Dialectic Society… “details the intense social life at West Point on the eve of the Civil War with amusing accounts of balls and dances and courtships as well as learning soldiering.†Jenkins Authorship has been attributed to Horace C. Porter Class of 1860.</p> <p>The copy at hand gives this penciled inscription on its title-page: “To Miss Constant. With the compliments of Cadet Kilpatrick U.S.M.A.†In a later hand beneath: “Gen. Judson Kilpatrick.â€</p> <p>Later nicknamed “Kill-Cavalry†the Irish-American Hugh Judson Kilpatrick 1836–1881 was a fellow member of the Dialectic Society who acted in numerous club performances. Martin p17 Kilpatrick graduated with the Class of 1861 as did Custer and it has been claimed that he was the first regular army officer to be wounded during the Civil War. </p> <p>Kilpatrick’s exploits during the War were numerous if not at times controversial or amusing. Surprised by Confederate forces while taking his bath purportedly sprang naked into his boots and onto his horse and then led a charge against the enemy. He served under Sherman as cavalry chief on the March to the Sea and as a “cavalry commander he was a brilliant leader having originated the saying that ‘cavalry can fight anywhere except at sea.’†DAB</p> <p>In 1874 Kilpatrick co-authored Allatoona: an historical and military drama in five acts and described by Benet’s as being “one of the earliest plays to deal with the Civil War . a tale in which two classmates at West Point fight on opposite sides in the great struggle.†The play was re-interpreted in 1930 by Christopher Morley and published as The Blue and the Gray: Or War is Hell.</p> <p>Kilpatrick’s inscription here as a twenty-three year old West Point cadet is one of the earliest examples one could hope to find for this colorful Union General.</p> <p>Ref. Aunt Fanny's Picture Present Book
London: N.P. 1859. First edition. An attractive but difficult to trace collection of children's lithographic ABC / Chapbooks from 1859. There are no publisher details and no titles to any of the works. The whole is made up of seven separate children's books. There are a total of 58 leaves in the work. The majority of these are printed in colour chromolithographic plates to one side only seven of the leaves are coloured text and printed on both sides which give us a total of 65 printed pages. Six of the seven are complete and one appears to lack two leaves. The seven works are as follows: 1 Animal ABC. Seven leaves with illustrations of animals and large letters below. 2 Animal ABC. Five leaves with four animals and text to each leaf. There are only A-P present so we suspect is missing two leaves. 3 Animal poems. Eight leaves with a large picture and a short verse. Numbered 1-8. 4 The naughty Chicken. A moral tale for children with a large picture and verses below in a red decorated frame. In typical Victorian style the naughty chicken is condemned to death by the court in London and is executed. The last plate appears to show the chicken being eaten! It is this tale which gave us the date for the volume as it illustrates the Penal Laws of London 1859. Eight numbered leaves. 5 Old mother Hubbard. Eight numbered leaves with a large picture title above and verse below. 6 Nursery Rhymes. There are seven leaves of chromo-lithographs quite a few to each page alternating with seveb leaves of text. The text leaves are printed to both sides so 14 pages Including a double page ABC. 7 Who killed Cock Robin. Seven leaves of colour lithograph with verses beneath. The whole is bound in a gilt and blind stamped decorated cover. A little rubbed and bumped. The spine appears to have been restored. The pages inside are in slightly darkened and foxed condition. Some small archival repairs to some page edges and reinforcement of the end papers. A fascinating collection. 25.5cm x 19cm. . Première édition. Une collection attrayante mais difficile à trouver d'ABC lithographiques pour enfants / livres de coloriage datant de 1859. Il n'y a aucune information sur l'éditeur ni aucun titre pour les œuvres. L'ensemble se compose de sept livres pour enfants distincts. L'ouvrage compte au total 58 feuilles. La plupart d'entre elles sont imprimées en chromolithographie couleur sur une seule face sept feuilles sont imprimées en couleur des deux côtés ce qui donne un total de 65 pages imprimées. Six des sept ouvrages sont complets et il semble manquer deux feuilles à l'un d'entre eux. Les sept ouvrages sont les suivants : 1 Animal ABC. Sept feuilles avec des illustrations d'animaux et de grandes lettres en dessous. 2 Animal ABC. Cinq feuilles avec quatre animaux et du texte sur chaque feuille. Seules les lettres A à P sont présentes nous soupçonnons donc qu'il manque deux feuilles. 3 Poèmes sur les animaux. Huit feuilles avec une grande image et un court poème. Numérotées de 1 à 8. 4 The naughty Chicken. Un conte moral pour enfants avec une grande image et des vers en dessous dans un cadre décoré de rouge. Dans le style victorien typique le poulet espiègle est condamné à mort par le tribunal de Londres et exécuté. La dernière planche semble montrer le poulet en train d'être mangé ! C'est ce conte qui nous a donné la date du volume car il illustre les lois pénales de Londres de 1859. Huit feuilles numérotées. 5 Old mother Hubbard. Huit feuilles numérotées avec une grande illustration le titre au-dessus et des vers en dessous. 6 Nursery Rhymes. Il y a sept feuilles de chromolithographies assez nombreuses sur chaque page alternant avec sept feuilles de texte. Les feuilles de texte sont imprimées des deux côtés soit 14 pages y compris une double page ABC. 7 Who killed Cock Robin. Sept feuilles de lithographies en couleur avec des vers en dessous. L'ensemble est relié dans une couverture décorée estampée à chaud et dorée. Légèrement frotté et abîmé. Le dos semble avoir été restauré. Les pages à l'intérieur sont légèrement noircies et rouillées. Quelques petites réparations archivistiques sur certains bords de pages et renforcement des pages de garde. Ingolstadt & Esslingen: Krüll and J.F. Schreiber 1870. English translation: "From the War of Liberation 1870. Portrait of a Turko! The avant-garde of the French "army of civilisation" ! Muhamedans destined for the invasion of Southern Germany!" Single sheet printed in original water colour and ink lithograph. 40.5cm x 33 cm. Exceptionally rare old coloured poster on the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 which Schreiber produced for Krüll'sche Buchhandlung in Ingolstadt. In the upper left margin a larger paper damage with loss of the letter "A" of the title bar. Otherwise in good condition apart from a slight crease and damage to the lower left corner. We can find no copies of this poster on sale at the present time. This is a curious poster. While France and the Ottoman Empire had a long history of alliance and co-operation dating back to the 16th century by the time of the Franco-Prussian War this partnership was largely symbolic and did not translate into Ottoman support or intervention during the conflict. We can only assume that this was purely propaganda in modern terms a "dog whistle" to the racist elements of the German population. . Traduction en anglais : "De la guerre de libération de 1870. Feuille unique imprimée en lithographie originale à l'encre et à l'aquarelle. 405 cm x 33 cm. Affiche ancienne en couleur sur la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870/71 exceptionnellement rare que Schreiber a produite pour Krüll'sche Buchhandlung à Ingolstadt. Dans la marge supérieure gauche un gros dégât de papier avec perte de la lettre "A" de la barre de titre. Sinon l'affiche est en bon état à l'exception d'un léger pli et d'un dommage dans le coin inférieur gauche. Nous n'avons trouvé aucun exemplaire de cette affiche en vente à l'heure actuelle. Il s'agit d'une affiche curieuse. Bien que la France et l'Empire ottoman aient une longue histoire d'alliance et de coopération remontant au XVIe siècle au moment de la guerre franco-prussienne ce partenariat était largement symbolique et ne s'est pas traduit par un soutien ou une intervention de l'Empire ottoman pendant le conflit. Nous ne pouvons que supposer qu'il s'agissait d'une pure propagande en termes modernes d'un "sifflet à chien" destiné aux éléments racistes de la population allemande. Krüll and J.F.
