‎anon ( possibly by John Leech?)‎

‎ORIGINAL NOTEBOOK DATED 1848 WITH VERY FINELY HAND-DRAWN PICTURES‎

‎One volume. 6-1/2 X 8 inches. Fully ink manuscript. There is a slight possiblity that this a diary of the illustrator John Leech . Title page gives place as Islington and date as 1848 other near year dates as 1851 on one newspaper clipping which is consistent with Leech's location in that year but there is no name given for the writer of the diary. There are 106 pages of ink handwritten text with 6 hand drawings some in ink and some in pencil and a pencil sketch of a man's head which is so faint as to be barely visible. Although Leech's name does not appear anywere on the notebook the drawing of two boys on p. 19 is initialled by Leech and the style of all the drawings is the same as published drawings by Leech. Perhaps the drawings are just very successful copies of printed drawings by Leech. A brief perusal of all his known drawings by Leech did not match any seen in this diary. The handwriting is possibly not all by the same person but it is hard to tell. Several of the drawings have a small note nearby indicating that they appeared in Punch. Numerous newspaper clippings almost all about Graphology and how handwriting can reveal writer's personality are laid in. 4to. 3/4 red leather binding. Binding is very secure. Text is clean and the writing is neat but often though not always it is very difficult to read due to excessively squiggly notation. Album exterior is worn. Internally VG with secure binding hinges not cracked no tears. Unique and interesting. Pictures available on request. . hardcover‎

‎Anon ( Favell Lee Mortimer )‎

‎The Peep of Day;‎

‎This Fourth Edition dated 1837 which genuinely can be considered as a "First thus" includes a preface to the Third Edition in which the author states that she has added: "some verses illustrative of each subject".
In addition to the 1833 First Edition is added "The Author's Apology". It is in effect a considerably extended "Peep" and includes within the standard pagination: "Hints for Teachers" "Questions on the lessons""Verses to be committed to memory" and finally a "List of Books for Young Children".
As the author herself notes that she has endeavoured to prove every statement "either by the notes or by the references prefixed to each chapter both of which are intended solely for the use of the teacher" see page xxiv.
Wiki notes as follows: According to Todd Pruzan "For the better part of the 19th century Mrs. Mortimer was something of a literary superstar to an impressionable audience both in her native England and beyond."2 The Peep of Day series was immensely popular: over 500000 copies of the original edition were issued; it went through numerous English editions; and it was published by the Religious Tract Society in thirty-seven different dialects and languages. Writing in The New Yorker on 4 March 1950 Mortimer's grandniece Rosalind Constable called the book "one of the most outspokenly sadistic children's books ever written" referring to her great aunt's belief in the need to impress upon children the pains of hell that would result from wrongdoing and the rejection of salvation."
Like many women writers her books initially appeared anonymously as "By the Author of 'The Peep of Day.'"
This book is in truly excellent condition. No markings previous owner's signature or annotations. It is tight in its original publishers binding with lemon curd yellow endpages and a slightly sun-faded spine. Also of note: the text is large with the lines well spaced - a coherent manual of religious instruction for the young. J. Hatchard and Son hardcover‎

‎ANON ("Honey Pot")‎

‎Night Delight‎

‎Private letter to Billy Jones dated October 2006 and detailing an erotic experience. Accordian style booklet in paper covered boards illustrated with black and white photo of frangipani in bloom. Loosely inserted is a hand written note that says the book comes with conditions: it is for Jones's eyes only and must never be included in any journal. In March 2018 Archives Fine Books acquired the better portion of the personal library of Queensland-based poet and artist Billy Jones 1935 - 2012. Upward of 400 mostly poetry volumes many of the books are heavily underlined and bear notes at the beginning and end. These appear in Jones's distinctive block capitals often in felt tipped pen and bleeding through the page. From amusing confessions of book theft to notes about meeting publishers and selling artworks to carnal post-coital reflections and attempts to touch the ineffable the marks and marginalia in Jones's personal library seem to catch the overflow of his 167 journals. Many first edition volumes of poetry and chapbooks in the collection are largely unmarked but bear affectionate inscriptions to "Billy" "B.J." and "Billy Bones" by well known Australian and American poets of the 1970s through to the naughties. Variously mundane poetic and cryptic these inscriptions give a sense that despite leaving behind an enormous collection of unpublished work Jones was deeply respected and beloved of his contemporaries. Taken together with his marginalia and underlining the impression is given of a large and incandescent life lived on the margins: outside the mainstream outside the cultural centres and sometimes literally ‘outside' - in a tent on the banks of Mary Smokes Creek.

Jones named Dostoevsky Van Gogh Whitman Hokusai Blake Hamsun Hesse Kerouac and Bukowski as his influences. His library suggests further engagements with the work of Artaud Thoreau Zukovsky Brabazon Sanford and Ferlinghetti. Seminal experiences included service in the military in post-war Japan a long cold winter in Sweden five days penniless in Paris in 1966 where he had hitch-hiked to see an exhibition of Van Gogh's Sunflowers and tragically the death of his girlfriend Diane Kelly in a drunken car crash in 1975. Diane is present in his marginalia throughout his life and later so was Kathy with whom he had a long relationship and a daughter Chloe.

Some of his books bear mass-produced bookmarks always either a picture of The Great Wave off Hanagawa or one of an owl under which he would write either his name Bill Jones or where he lived Mary Smokes. unknown‎
