Un des 217 exemplaires sur alfa Navarre n° 113. . Première oeuvre de l'auteur américain traduite en français elle valut à Faulkner sa réputation d'auteur ténébreux et scandaleux. Comme l'écrit Malraux dans sa célèbre préface Sanctuaire « c'est l'intrusion de la tragédie grecque dans le roman policier » où l'écrivain a tenu à inventer selon son propre aveu «l'histoire la plus effroyable qu'on puisse imaginer» Dans un climat de violence de tension et de perversion ce roman-clé est sans aucun doute le récit le plus noir de Faulkner.
