No date shown on copyright page other than 1926 but this was printed sometime after 1949 as on back panel of jacket which has several blurbs about Soldiers' Pay it mentions Faulkner as having won the Nobel Prize which he won in 1949. In 1925 Faulkner moved to New Orleans where he joined a literary circle centered on Sherwood Anderson and was introduced to the modernist innovations of T. S. Eliot and James Joyce. His interest in experimental writing was piqued and he began a novel his first Soldier's Pay portraying the tragic homecoming of a wounded war hero. Though set in Georgia it was nonetheless a kind of rehearsal for the later Mississippi novels full of despair and “mythic motifs of impotence and futile love." The Literary Encyclopedia Wheatley's stylish thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling writers from the 1930s through the 1960s. His Gregory Sallust series was a key inspirations for Ian Fleming's James Bond stories. Review of William Faulkner's first novel Soldiers' Pay in The Literary Digest International Book Review 1927 by Louis Kronenberger sent by Faulkner to his mother. With a brief tiny handwritten annotation by Faulkner in black ink at the conclusion of the review: "Getting along well. Billy." Also included is a contemporary typescript of another early review of Soldiers' Pay from The Times Picayune by John McLure. Provenance of this material: Dean Faulkner Wells. Together with: First edition of the book signed by Maud Falkner in ink on the title. Dark blue publisher's cloth lettered in yellow blue patterned endpapers sporadic minor stains and spots largely concentrated at margins; gently worn but sturdy. Faulkner's first novel was published largely due to the efforts of Sherwood Anderson 1876-1941 who recommended both the present novel and Faulkner's second work Mosquitoes to his own publisher. One notes that Maud Falkner spells her name without the "u" that Faulkner adopted as a writer. Before his literary career Mississippi-born Faulkner attempted to join the Canadian RAF by passing himself off as British. To do so he added the "u" to his surname which was originally spelled "Falkner" and by some accounts feigned a British accent during his interview. His family retained the original spelling which appears here in his mother's signature. Massey 304; Petersen A2a. Provenance of the book: Swann Galleries 2025. A remarkable anti-slavery speech delivered on the floor of the Virginia state legislature by Representative Charles Faulkner. The previous year Nat Turner had led the slave insurrection in Southampton County Virginia profoundly realizing the worst nightmares of southern slave owners and the incident sparked the last effort in the South to abolish slavery. Faulkner from what would later become West Virginia led the fight in alliance with Thomas Jefferson's grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph to pass a bill that would have freed all children born of slave parents after July 4 1840. Had Faulkner succeeded Virginia and other southern border states would have been unlikely candidates for secession. The bill had much support but it eventually failed 73-58 owing in part to the malapportionment of the Virginia legislature in favor of Tidewater slave owners. Faulkner's stirring speech emphasized slavery's evil for whites: "It is an evil - it is an institution which presses heavily against the best interests of the state. It banishes free white labor - it exterminates the mechanic - the artizan - the manufacturer.It converts the energy of a community into indolence - its power into imbecility - its efficiency into weakness. Sir being thus injurious have we not a right to demand its extermination Shall society suffer that the slave-holder may continue to gather his crop of human flesh" A scarce and important document of anti-slavery sentiment in the South thirty years before secession.
