New York: Boni & Liveright 1927. First American Edition. First Printing one of 3047 copies. Octavo 19.25cm; navy blue cloth with titles stamped in yellow on spine and front panel; blue and white-patterned endpapers; dustjacket; 349pp. The Chatto & Windus file copy bearing Richard Hughes's armorial bookplate to front pastedown and "Chatto Windus" written in blue colored pencil across upper margin of title page. Light dust soil to upper edge of text with mild wear and softening to spine ends; Near Fine. First Issue dustjacket is unclipped priced $2.50 heavily sunned at spine and a bit less so along flap folds with some shallow chipping to spine ends and corner tips and a margin of overall wear; Very Good and unrestored. Housed in a custom slipcase and chemise. A distinguished copy of Faulkner's second novel a satirical look at the members of a New Orleans artistic colony who embark on a four-day yachting cruise. Welsh novelist Richard Hughes was instrumental in bringing Faulkner to the attention of the London firm Chatto & Windus who published his first novel Soldier's Pay in June of 1930. At the time Faulkner was entirely unknown in England and little-known or regarded in the U.S. Hughes wrote introductions to the British editions of Soldier's Pay The Sound and the Fury and Mosquitoes and can easily be credited with bringing Faulkner's writing to the broader attention of the English-speaking world.
