Gulkowitsch, Lazar
Der Hasidismus; Religionswissenschaftlich Untersucht
good condition; FT) Paper wrappers. 8vo. 81 pages. 25 cm. First edition. In German. The dissertation in philosophy of Lazar Gulkowitsch, presented under the auspices of the Publications of the Research Institute for Comparative Religious History at the University of Leipzig, Series 2, issue 6. Lazar Gulkowitsch (1898-1941) was an eminent Jewish Studies scholar, chair of the Jewish Studies department at Leipzig in the 1920s and 1930s. Hasidism, religious studies examined is a historical exposition of Hasidism with an emphasis on the study of mysticism, a tendency Gulkowitsch was critical of. He published, in the last few years of his life, three longer studies on different aspects of Hasidism, studies which scholars consider more thorough then this first well known study from 1927, which have never been republished and are hard to obtain. Subjects: Hasidism. Chassidismus. Appears to have been bound in with other material at some point. Paper wrappers loose, covers lightly soiled. First signature loose, last signature shaken. Pages aged, but clean. Good + condition. (GER-33-18)

The work brought him lasting recognition and has been republished at least 40 times since; it is still considered to be an essential text of rabbinic learning. Guth, Benyamin Barukh
SHITAH MEKUBETSET HE-HADASH ... : KOVETS AL YAD KOL MAAMARE HAZAL BA-SHAS BAVLI / HAVERTIV ANI BINYAMIN BARUKH GUTAH. VOL I: SEDER ZERAIM, ONLY (OF 2)
(FT) Cloth, 8vo, 133, 10 pages. 23 cm. Vol. 2 was published 16 years later, in 1926, in Sighet-M. Goldman (#608) notes that Guth could not afford to publish this volume himself and among those whom he approached for assistance was Solomon Schechter. Schechter was so impressed with the volume and felt that it would make an important contribution to academic scholarship that he promised to have JTSA publish it. Guth proceeded to have the work printed, only to be informed by Schechter that JTSA was not prepared to fund the publication. Guth managed to renegotiate the terms of publication with the printer and had it issued at his own expense. He did not relate this story until he published vol. 2, since Schechter was dead by then and Guth considered his death an atonement for the incident. Guth was born in Satu-Mare (Satmar) Hungary in 1856, immigrating to the US in 1898 or 1900. He was president of the Board of Orthodox Rabbis of New York and a member of Agudath Harabbonim. He died in 1935. This anthology of Talmudic sayings is arranged alphabetically by the names of the Rabbis who said them. A brief biography is provided for each rabbi. This volume covers Order Zeraim (Goldman) . Subject(s) : Talmud -- Compilation. Talmud. Zeraim. Selections. Tannaim. Amoraim. OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide (Univ of Haifa, NYPL, Bar Ilan Univ, National Libr of Israel, JTSA, YU, UCLA, Hebrew College) . Very Good Condition in original binders cloth. (AMR-28-25A)
