Heline, Theodore
GERMANY, THE REIGN OF THE WINGED CROSS
Original stiff paper wrappers. 8vo, 48 pages. Interesting "ambiguous" defense of Nazi Germany from just prior to US entry into WWII. The author discusses the history of Germany, the Nazi party, and other groups with similar ideas, with a special examination of Nazi philosophy, all from an explicitly Christian perspective, with many references to Jesus Christ. While not supportive of Nazism, the book is also not very critical either. "We cannot condone the crimes of the Nazi regime. Yet, we can have forgivness in our hearts for those who have committed them even as we have for the Inquisitors of the Medieval Church who in their zeal for God's kingdom subjected literally millions to torture and death in the name of a religion born of love and mercy. UNTERSUCHUNGEN ÜBER DIE PESCHÎTTÂ: ZUR GESAMTEN HEBRÄISCHEN BIBEL ; ZUGLEICH EIN BEITRAG ZUR ERKENNTNIS DER ALTEN BIBELÜBERSETZUNGEN.
Berlin: M. Poppelauer, 1911. Wrappers; 8vo. 72 pages. In German. Teil I. No more published? Includes bibliographical references. Chaim Heller was a rabbinical and biblical scholar, "one of the very few modern scholars who combined a vast and deep talmudic erudition of the traditional type with a thorough competence in the methods of textual research. He defended the traditional masoretic text against the Bible critics. " (EJ) Of this work, speaking about those who criticize the reliability of traditional texts, Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo says, "perhaps the most devastating blow to these critical theories was delivered by Rabbi Chaim Heller (1878-1960) . Not only had he mastered the Oral Torah to the extent that he was one of the greatest talmudic scholars of his time, but he also knew every extant ancient Bible translation in its original target language, whether Aramaic, Greek, Latin, or Syriac. In his Untersuchungen ueber die Peschitta (1911) , he took issue with those who concluded that apparent divergences from the Torah in their possession were due to variae lectiones in the ancient texts. Not so, he asserted. Every translation is a commentary, and the variations result from the translator preferring one explanation in the Oral Torah to another. Thus, the differences were exegetical rather than textual. He further showed that all the apparent differences stemmed from the thirty-two exegetical rules of biblical interpretation enumerated by Rabbi Elazar ben Rabbi Shimon. In the above-mentioned study he gives examples showing how the translator employed each rule in his version. " (Cardozo, Between Silence and Speech) . SUBJECT(S) : Bible. O. T. Syriac -- Versions -- Peshitta. Bible. O. T. -- Criticism, Textual. Ex-library. Bookplate of Peter Wiernik on inside front cover. Wiernik was an American Yiddish journalist, "editor for New York's most important Yiddish daily, the Jewish Morning Journal. His editorials, possessed of intelligence, good taste and tolerance, advocated a fusion of modern Orthodoxy and Americanism, and evinced a coolness to political Zionism and hostility to socialism. " (Joseph Hirsch, EJ) Age-stained. Some corners chipped. Wrappers very chipped, but with no loss of text. Signatures loose. All pages present. Some pages still uncut. Text in good condition. PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS BEFORE THE CENTRAL CONFERENCE OF AMERICAN RABBIS CHARLEVOIX, MICH., JUNE 28, 1910
1st separate edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo. 11 pages, 23 cm. In English. Rabbi Maximilian Heller (1860-1929) was a prominent figure in the United States' Southern Jewish communities. He was a Reform rabbi and took on the main causes of his day: racism and Jewish emancipation in eastern Europe, nationalism and nativism, immigration and assimilation. " He emigrated from Germany and was one of the first U. S. -trained rabbis. Rabbi Heller served for 40 years as spiritual leader of a Reform Jewish congregation in New Orleans--at that time the largest city in the South. "Far more than a congregational rabbi, Heller assumed an activist role in local affairs, Reform Judaism, and the Zionist movement, maintaining positions often unpopular with his neighbors, congregants, and colleagues. His deep concern for social justice led him to question two basic assumptions that characterized his larger social milieu--segregation and Jewish assimilation" (Malone, 1997) . Reprinted from the C. C. A. R. Year Book. Vol. 20.SUBJECTS: American Judaism. Reform. OCLC lists two copies listed worldwide (JTS and HUC) . Front wrapper has minor tear. Some writing in pencil Overall very good condition. Rare. (AMR-56-3)
