‎Hosmer, James K(endall)‎

‎The Jews - Ancient, Mediaeval and Modern‎

‎8th edition, with a new introduction by A.D. Lewis. London, Fisher Unwin, 1917. Mit 2 Faltkarten u. 35 ganzseitigen Abbildungen. 1 Bl., LX, 381 S. Or.-Lwd.; berieben, Rücken braunfleckig, Kopfschnitt etw. angestaubt.‎

‎James K. Hosmer (1834 - 1927) war u.a. - Innen sehr gut erhalten.‎

‎MIRACLE WITHIN A MIRACLE: JOHANNES REUCHLIN AND THE JEWISH BOOK CONTROVERSY: AN EXHIBITION COMMEMORATING THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF REUCHLIN'S DEFENSE OF JEWISH WRITINGS‎

‎ISBN: 9780978813482; 0978813480Original publisher’s wrappers, Large 8vo, 47 pages. Includes 15 color illustrations and describes 25 book titles in detail; 25 cm. “When Johannes Reuchlin published hisAugenspiegel  (Eye Glasses) in 1511, just in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair, he knew it would cause a tremendous stir. After all, Reuchlin had decided to defend Jewish writings–and Judaism itself–against the combined forces of the emperor and the highest ecclesiastical authorities in Germany. It is remarkable, or, as Josel of Rosheim said, "miraculous, " that the Jews and Reuchlin prevailed and the books were preserved. The dramatic story of this moment in Jewish-Christian relations is retold in this exhibition through the very books that flamed the controversy. The exhibition is an international effort involving two American libraries and three German institutions. Inspired by the 500th anniversary of the appearance of Reuchlin's Eye Glasses,  we have undertaken this project on two continents and at four venues. The Rare Book & Manuscript Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Cincinnati, Ohio, collaborated with the Institut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt am Main, the Museum Johannes Reuchlin in Pforzheim, and the Jewish Museum of Frankfurt, the crucial location for the historic events 500 years ago. Rare imprints from the pamphlet wars surrounding the Jewish Book Controversy are on display, as well as important works on both sides of the Renaissance humanist movement to recover ancient sources, including those written in Hebrew. Working together with David Gilner of the HUC-JIR, Fritz Backhaus of the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt, Michael Matthäus of the Institut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt am Main, as well as Christoph Timm and Isabel Greschat of the city of Pforzheim, we have produced this exhibition to commemorate Johannes Reuchlin and the Jewish Book Controversy. But we are also celebrating what Reuchlin stands for today, most importantly, religious tolerance, respect for books and people, and the power of knowledge to break down prejudice and build respect and understanding for cultural differences” (U of Illinois, 2012) . SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Relations -- Christianity. Christianity and other religions -- Judaism. Jewish literature -- Censorship -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Humanism -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Scholasticism -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Censorship -- Exhibitions. OCLC lists 14 copies worldwide (Emory, Newberry, Illinois, Harvard, Luther Seminary, HUC, Brown, Southern Meth, HUC-Israel, Nat Taiwan U, & 4 in Europe) , None in New York, Philadelphia, or California. ‎Jahrgang 1910, Berlin / Donnerstag, den 13. Oktober 1910 / Wien/ Nummer 33 (Nr. 33). Umfang acht Seiten. ---- An original issue of the legendary magazine "Der Sturm" (The Storm) that covered the expressionism movement in Germany. It was founded in Berlin in 1910 by Herwarth Walden and ran weekly until 1914, later monthly, became a quarterly in 1924 until it ceased publication in 1932. Most issues were sent by post, which explains the usual folding crease on the middle of the fragile wooden-paper publication. Particularly in the time before the outbreak of World War I, "Der Sturm" played a crucial role in the French-German exchange of expressionist artists, which led to a special relationship between Berlin and Paris. Regularly, poems and other texts of French and/or French speaking expressionists were published (Guillaume Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars, etc.). This relationship was renewed after the war despite the hostilities between the two countries caused by the fighting. The magazine also fostered the Galerie "Der Sturm", started by Walden to celebrate its 100th edition, in 1912. The gallery became the focus for Berlin's modern art scene for a decade. Starting with an exhibition of Fauves and Der Blaue Reiter, followed by the introduction in Germany of the Italian Futurists, Cubists and Orphists, the gallery was to exhibit Edvard Munch, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Albert Gleizes, Robert Delaunay, Jean Metzinger, Gino Severini, Jean Arp, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Kurt Schwitters. ---- 29 x 39 Cm. 0,15 Kg.‎

‎LITTLE JOURNEYS TO THE HOMES OF GREAT BUSINESS MEN. MAYER A. ROTHSCHILD: Vol. 24, April. 1909. No. 4.‎

‎The original individual volumes. Each volume usually consists of: at least a 26 page text; frequently enhanced with woodcut devices and ornaments (many designed by Samuel Warner), and portraits and plates; and often with ads for the products of the Roycroft Shop (furniture, brass, books, bindings, etc.); as well as some commercial ads (like Pears' Soap). Some printing in red and black. 8vo. 15.5 x 20. 5 cm. Uncut. Sewn into original printed wraps, as issued. Fine condition. Hubbard (1856-1915), was a prolific writer and a tireless entrepreneur who is most famous today as the founder and guiding lig h t of the Roycroft printing and craft shops. These were based on the Hammersmith arts and crafts complex of William Morris, but with many American and Hubbard-ian twists and turns. Until his death on t he S.S. Lusitania, he was one of the most dynamic and famous men in the world. On his first trip abroad his letters home were mostly travelogue, and they became the basis for his first magazine eff ort . He sold Putnam's the idea of putting out a brief 'Little Journey' biographical sketch on a monthly basis. Later, when he established his own print shop, he took over the whole project. He also p rint ed and published two national opinion magazines, the 'Fra' and the 'Philistine'. He was also responsible for the famed 'A Message to Garcia'. "The graveyards are full of people the World could no t do without" -- Elbert Hubbard, 'Epigrams' (1911)‎

‎Hudson, Manley O.‎

‎INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNALS. PAST AND FUTURE.‎

‎1st edition. Original Cloth, 12mo. XII, 287 pages. 21.8x14, 9 cm. An authoritative survey of significant international courts and tribunals over the last 150 years, beginning with a brief history from the American-British Treaty of 1794 to the time of publication, as initial preparations were being made to try the almost defeated Nazi leadership. The work goes on to offer a constructive analysis of the place of tribunals in problems of world affairs, with an emphasis on their organization, operation, function as well as a critical examination of the merits and defects. Hudson concludes with his recommendations for the future as to the continuance of the Permanent Court of International Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Very Good Condition. ‎Huebsch, Adolph‎

‎HYMNEN FÜR DEN ÖFFENTLICHEN GOTTESDIENST DER TEMPELGEMEINDE AHAWATH CHESED‎

‎1st edition. Original Cloth, 12mo, 64 pages. Singerman 2394. Wachs 212. In German. Title translates as, "Hymns for the Public Service of Temple Congregation Ahawath Chesed. " Contains Hymns for Sabbath and all the festivals and also includes sermons. Adolph Huebsch (1830-1884) was born in Liptovsky Svaty Mikulas, Hungary and, while a student, participated in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/9. He served as an Orthodox rabbi before earning a Ph. D. From the University of Prague in 1861. In that year he became the rabbi of the Neu-Synagogue in Prague. In 1866 Huebsch was invited to become head of Congregation Ahawath Chesed in New York, where he served for the remainder of his life. His interest in liturgy led him to introduce a moderate reformed ritual and to compose a new prayer book, later adopted by many other congregations, in 1872, and, a year later, as part of the same effort, this hymnal. OCLC lists no copies south of Cincinnati. Wear to spine, some internal staining and wear, good solid condition. (KH-9-15)‎
