‎Horodezky, Samuel Aba‎

‎DER HASIDIZM UN ZAYNE FIRER‎

‎(FT) Hardcover, 8vo, 292 pages, 2 volumes in 1, portraits, 24 cm. In Yiddish. SUBJECT(S) : Hasidism -- History. Hasidim -- Biography. Translation of: Hasidut veha-hasidim. Horodezky (1871–1957) was a “scholar and historian of Jewish mysticism and Hasidism. He was born in Malin (Kiev region) and studied in the courts of Tzaddikim in Malin and Chernobyl. He was attracted to the Haskalah and at the age of 20 settled in Berdichev where he changed from a rabbinic author to a Hebrew writer and began to correspond with contemporary authors. The pogroms of 1905–06 made him leave the Ukraine. He took advantage of his election as a delegate to the Eighth Zionist Congress (The Hague, 1907) and remained in the West. From 1908 to 1938 he lived for several periods in Switzerland and Germany. Horodezky was a contributor to the Encyclopaedia Judaica (1927–34) , and founder of the Hasidic archives of the Schocken Press (1935) . In 1938 he emigrated to Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv. Horodezky was one of the last scholars to write in the manner of Wissenschaft der Judenthums before its development into modern Jewish scholarship. Like other contemporaries, he was a product of the intellectual climate of the East European Jewish town and educated himself to become a Hebrew writer. His quiet, informative, non-argumentative manner of speech helped break the boycott of the maskilim against Hasidism. He liked to cite representative sources but wrote little analysis and criticism” (Bin-Gorion in EJ 2010) . OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. Hinge repairs. Wear to binding. Yellow pages. Title page has brittle edges. Personal inscription inside front cover. (Hasid-3-6)‎

‎EXHIBITION OF JEWISH CEREMONIALS AND JEWISH FOLK ART; JUDAICA COLLECTION MR. AND MRS. JOSEPH B. HORWITZ‎

‎Original wraps. 8vo. 24 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Exhibition of Jewish Ceremonials and Jewish Folk Art: Judaica Collection, Mr. And Mrs. Joseph B. Horwitz, Fairmount Temple, Cleveland, Ohio, May 26, 1962. Descriptive list of 179 items from the extensive Horwitz collection, with 26 black and white illustrations. The Horwitz collection was donated to B'nai B'rith Museum: “But the Klutznick really burst onto the Jewish museum scene after Cleveland philanthropists Joseph and Olyn Horwitz donated their extensive Judaica collection to B’nai B’rith during the 1970s. The gift, which included a number of rare Italian artifacts, such as a 16th-century Torah wrapper and an 18th-century silk folder for a ketubah, a marriage contract, catapulted the museum into the ranks of major Jewish cultural institutions. Since B’nai B’rith was primarily a social welfare organization, it needed a specialist to care for and display such an important collection. So it hired its first museum expert, Anna Cohn, from the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, in Williamstown, Mass. , in 1976. As the Klutznick Museum’s first director, Cohn said it took years to prepare, present and interpret the Horwitz collection, which she inherited 'well cared for' and still in its original boxes when she arrived at the museum. ” ('How B’nai B’rith’s Museum Went From Must-See Site to Oblivion' 'Klutznick Museum's Collection, Including George Washington's Famed Letter to Jews, Sits In Storage'; By Paul Berger; Published August 12, 2011, Forward) . ‎Hosmer, James K(endall)‎

‎The Jews - Ancient, Mediaeval and Modern‎

‎8th edition, with a new introduction by A.D. Lewis. London, Fisher Unwin, 1917. Mit 2 Faltkarten u. 35 ganzseitigen Abbildungen. 1 Bl., LX, 381 S. Or.-Lwd.; berieben, Rücken braunfleckig, Kopfschnitt etw. angestaubt.‎

‎James K. Hosmer (1834 - 1927) war u.a. - Innen sehr gut erhalten.‎

‎An mein Volk! Sechs Briefe eines Deutschen an seine Landsleute.‎

‎2 Bl., 86 Seiten. "Hauptansteckungsherd dieser epidemisch gewordenen Manie des Handelns und Geschäftsmachens ist zweifelsohne die über Deutschland ergossene Sturmfluth des Judenthums ... so viel ist jedenfalls sicher, daß die Judenemazipation für Deutschland wenigsten ein Unglück, ein folgenschwerer Mißgriff gewesen" (S.20/21). - Alter Stempel auf Titel, Rückenetikett. ‎Hotchkiss, Valerie R; Price, David.‎

‎MIRACLE WITHIN A MIRACLE: JOHANNES REUCHLIN AND THE JEWISH BOOK CONTROVERSY: AN EXHIBITION COMMEMORATING THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF REUCHLIN'S DEFENSE OF JEWISH WRITINGS‎

‎ISBN: 9780978813482; 0978813480Original publisher’s wrappers, Large 8vo, 47 pages. Includes 15 color illustrations and describes 25 book titles in detail; 25 cm. “When Johannes Reuchlin published hisAugenspiegel  (Eye Glasses) in 1511, just in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair, he knew it would cause a tremendous stir. After all, Reuchlin had decided to defend Jewish writings–and Judaism itself–against the combined forces of the emperor and the highest ecclesiastical authorities in Germany. It is remarkable, or, as Josel of Rosheim said, "miraculous, " that the Jews and Reuchlin prevailed and the books were preserved. The dramatic story of this moment in Jewish-Christian relations is retold in this exhibition through the very books that flamed the controversy. The exhibition is an international effort involving two American libraries and three German institutions. Inspired by the 500th anniversary of the appearance of Reuchlin's Eye Glasses,  we have undertaken this project on two continents and at four venues. The Rare Book & Manuscript Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Cincinnati, Ohio, collaborated with the Institut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt am Main, the Museum Johannes Reuchlin in Pforzheim, and the Jewish Museum of Frankfurt, the crucial location for the historic events 500 years ago. Rare imprints from the pamphlet wars surrounding the Jewish Book Controversy are on display, as well as important works on both sides of the Renaissance humanist movement to recover ancient sources, including those written in Hebrew. Working together with David Gilner of the HUC-JIR, Fritz Backhaus of the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt, Michael Matthäus of the Institut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt am Main, as well as Christoph Timm and Isabel Greschat of the city of Pforzheim, we have produced this exhibition to commemorate Johannes Reuchlin and the Jewish Book Controversy. But we are also celebrating what Reuchlin stands for today, most importantly, religious tolerance, respect for books and people, and the power of knowledge to break down prejudice and build respect and understanding for cultural differences” (U of Illinois, 2012) . SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Relations -- Christianity. Christianity and other religions -- Judaism. Jewish literature -- Censorship -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Humanism -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Scholasticism -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Censorship -- Exhibitions.
