‎KAPLAN (Francis).‎

‎Kaplan, Chaim Aron‎

‎[JAPANESE EDITION SCROLL OF AGONY, THE WARSAW DIARY OF CHAIM A. KAPLAN: VOL. 3]‎

‎1st Japanese Edition. Original Paper Wrappers. Volume 1: 209 pages ; 19 cm. “Smuggled out of the ghetto and carefully preserved in a kerosene can on a farm outside Warsaw, Chaim Kaplan’s diary, originally recorded in beautiful, disciplined Hebrew script, is a detailed eyewitness report of the Nazi occupation of Warsaw and a unique account of the destruction of the Jewish communities of Poland. Scroll of Agony begins on September 1, 1939, as the author, a respected educator, describes the Nazi blitzkrieg that stunned the world. It ends in August 1942, when Kaplan realized that the Nazi noose was around his neck. Kaplan’s remarkably objective account of the politics of occupation depicts a world of starvation and forced labor, of capricious death and planned mass murder. Yet his orderly script also conveys a world in which the struggle for survival included spiritual resistance: conducting services behind drawn shades, struggling to keep the schools open, and holding on to the rich fabric of communal life in defiance of the strongest force of dehumanization that the world has ever seen. ” (US Holocaust Museum Library) OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (U Illinois, Waseda Univ. Library, National Diet Library) . Very good+ condition. (holo2-131-7a)‎

‎Les Temps d'Epreuve: Sermons et Allocutions.‎

‎RARE collections of sermons and addresses by the eminent Jewish French rabbi and author Jacob Kaplan (1895-1994) who held rabbinical posts in Mulhouse, Alsace (1922), and in Paris (1929), worked with the resistance movement during the German occupation, served briefly as interim chief rabbi of France (1944) and later became chief rabbi of Paris (1950). He was appointed to the post of chief rabbi of France in 1955 and retired at the end of 1980 with the title of honorary chief rabbi. Apart from his Jewish scholarship, Kaplan was also a lecturer at l'Institut d'Etudes Politiques, a member of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques in Paris and was known for his openness to dialogue with the Christian churches of France and for his staunch support of Zionism. He spoke out during World War II against anti-Jewish measures adopted by the collaborationist Vichy Government and openly proclaimed French Jewry's solidarity with the State of Israel during the period of the Six-Day War and after, when French official policy was hostile to Israel. 185x120mm. 267 pages. ‎THE AIMS OF RECONSTRUCTION.‎

‎8vo. 12 pages. SUBJECT (S) : Reconstructionist Judaism – introductions. Kaplan (1881-1983) , born in Lithuania, was a founder of the Reconstructionist movement in the United States. His family moved to the U. S. When he was nine, and he was later ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary and was a rabbi in New York. In 1909 Kaplan began working at the Seminary, under Solomon Schechter, first as a dean and soon after began a half-century long teaching career. His Reconstructionist views “[meant] that Judaism should be considered from a pragmatic, historical point of view, rather than a metaphysical, revelational one[, that the] focus of the content of Jewish life is the Jewish people, its needs, and its responses to challenge, rather than revealed texts or metaphysical constructions....Tradition can guide but must not dictate. ”(EJ, Cohen) Very good condition.
