Lowenthal, Ernst G. ; and Hans Oppenheimer; editors
PHILO-ATLAS: HANDBUCH FÜR DIE JÜDISCHE AUSWANDERUNG [PHILO ATLAS]
1st edition. Original printed Publishers linen, 8vo, (5) , 283 pages. With 20 colored maps of countries and regions around the world, including one world map displaying distances from Berlin. Title translates as, Philo-Atlas: Guide for Jewish Emigration. Styled after the popular Philo Lexikon, this publication is a remarkable record of its time. Issued barely two weeks prior to the outbreak of Kristallnacht (9/10 November, 1938) , this appears as nothing but a tourist guide-book. Yet its contents reveal a far more urgent need: An alphabetical survey of countries world-wide with their respective rules for obtaining entry-visas. These are no tourist formalities, for now survival depends on them. Which countries still accept migrants? How much money do they demand? For which occupations is there a need? Which diseases need one be prepared for? Where to find local organizations who can assist immigrants? The Jewish owned Philo Verlag, was forcibly closed a month following the publication of this guide, by which time the Nazis decided they were no longer willing to permit Jews to leave Germany even if they could find a country willing to take them in, which after the Evian Conference of earlier that summer, was most unlikely. The Jews who remained in Germany were now quite trapped. Two copies sold at auction in 2018 for USD 1125 and USD 1375 each, with buyers premiums. Beautiful copy, near fine condition.

Lowth, Robert
LECTURES ON THE SACRED POETRY OF THE HEBREWS
Publishers cloth. 8vo. XXII, 415 pages. 22 cm. Translation of the De sacra poesi Hebraeorum; translated from the Latin of the late Robert Lowth, by G. Gregory; to which are added the principal notes of Professor Michaelis and notes by the translator and others. Robert Lowth (17101787) , Hebraist. Appointed professor of poetry at Oxford in 1741, Lowth devoted a series of 34 Latin lectures to the literary qualities of biblical poetry. Originally published as Praelectiones de sacra poesi Hebraeorum (Oxford, 1753) , these were translated into English as Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews (London, 1787) . Lowth was the first modern scholar to formulate the theory of parallelism as the metrical basis of biblical Hebrew poetry, a discovery which had been partially anticipated in the 16th century by Azariah de Rossi, whom Lowth quoted. Renaissance scholars, relying on classical and contemporary verse forms, had tried unsuccessfully to scan poetic passages in the Bible as though they were classical hexameters, but Lowth showed that Hebrew poetry was fundamentally antiphonal, the latter part of each verse echoing the idea of the first by corroboration or contrast The mountains skipped like rams/the hills like children of the flock. His translation of the Book of Isaiah (1778) was also original in biblical translation, distinguishing between the prose and poetry of the original Hebrew. Lowth is notable for having stressed the sublimity of Old Testament literature and the vividness of its imagery in an era of prudery and circumlocution. He was bishop of Oxford 176667 and thereafter bishop of London. (EJ 2008) Subjects: Hebrew poetry - History and criticism. Hebrew language - Rhythm. Bible. Old Testament Poetical books - Criticism, interpretation, etc. Cloth previous rebacked with tape, light wear to edges of boards, light soiling to outer edges, minor foxing on endpages, overall very fresh and clean. Good condition. (CJH-1-22)

(Caillet, 6846. Duveen, 'Alchimie', 370. Guaïta, n°530 et 1565. Palau, 143.864. Renouard, n° 376 pour la marque au titre. Rogent & Duràn, 'Bibliografía de les impressions Lullianes', Barcelona, 1927, n°120). Quelques piqûres d’humidité éparses. Cachet en pied du titre: "A.L.L.R". Très bon exemplaire, bien relié, bien conservé.
