WHEN JEWS WERE GIS: HOW WORLD WAR II CHANGED A GENERATION AND REMADE AMERICAN JEWRY
Original Wrappers. 8vo. 26 pages. 23 cm. First edition. No. 4 in the David W. Belin Lecture in American Jewish Affairs series. Presented March 7, 1994. I am not interested in revising the postwar portrait so much as exploring its dynamics. I also want to examine how it happened that after a devastating world war in which Jews sustained many times more deaths than Americans, American Jews emerged with the resilience and optimism to press their specifically Jewish claims upon the world. (Page 1) Deborah Dash Moore is a specialist in the social history of twentieth-century American Jewry. Subjects: Jews -- United States -- History -- 20th century. World War, 1939-1945 -- Participation, Jewish. Jewish soldiers -- United States. World War, 1939-1945 -- Influence. United States -- Ethnic relations. OCLC lists 30 copies worldwide. Spine rebacked. THOSE OF THE STREET: THE CATHOLIC-JEWS OF MALLORCA : A STUDY IN URBAN CULTURAL CHANGE
Original Cloth. 8vo. VIII, 218, [2] pages. 24 cm. First edition. In this volume an urban anthropologist examines a Jewish community that has shown a unique capacity for persistence, for it is the only continuously surviving Jewish ethnic tradition in Spain. The Xuetas of Mallorca are the descendants of Jews who have lived on the island since Moorish or possibly Roman times. Through compelled to convert to Christianity in 1435, the Mallorcan Jews continued to persist for centuries as a crypto-Jewish community, a Christian guild, and an occupationally specialized barrio. Enduring economic collapse, religious persecution, political pressure, slander and plague, the Xuetas of Mallorca entered the twentieth century organized in an occupationally specialized and endogamous community that was in all respects culturally Jewish except for the fact that its members were practicing Catholics. - From the Jacket. Both a general history of the Jewish presence on Mallorca, a history of the Xuetas (Chuetas) , and their postwar integration into Mallorcan society. Chuetas, term of abuse given to the Marranos of Majorca, who lived as a separate and distinct community within Majorcan society after their ancestors had been compulsorily baptized at the time of the persecutions of 1391 and 1435. Opinions differ concerning the origin of this term. Some hold that it is derived from the Majorcan chuya, meaning 'pork'; according to another hypothesis, the term is derived from xuhita or xuheta, the Majorcan form of judio ('Jew') . Unlike other places in what used to be the Crowns of Castile and Aragon, the Conversos, that is the Chuetas, of Majorca were the only group of New Christians who continued to live together and, apparently, to adhere to some form of Crypto-Judaism. The Chuetas, largely silversmiths, still live in a special district, where they have their own church, Santa Eulalia. - EJ 2008. Subjects: Chuetas. Chuetas. Social history. Joden-christenen. Marranen. Majorca (Spain) - Social conditions. Spain - Majorca. Chuetas. Previous owners name and bookstamp on endpage and title page; otherwise clean and fresh in very good jacket. Very good condition. (SEF-52-21)

Moi, Juif-Arabe en Israël
Paris, Encre, 1985.

1st edition. 5619. Original printed wrappers, 8vo 15, [1 blank] pages. Singerman 1593. This is Jewish Union Army Surgeon-in-Chief Morris Aschs copy, with his ownership signature on the front cover.Leading Jewish Civil War collector Benjamin Shapell features a Civil War-era letter written by Asch with signature matching that on this item. (https://www.shapell.org/manuscript/jewish-civil-war-surgeon-morris-asch/). In his 2021 article Forgotten Jewish Doctors in the Civil WarAvi Heiligman notes that Surgeon Dr. Morris Asch served with the Army of the Potomac in the Union Army and was present at many important battles during the war. Asch was born in Philadelphia and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1855 as a medical doctor. When the fighting began in 1861, Dr. Asch was appointed as an assistant surgeon in the U.S. Army. A few months later, he went on active duty and in 1862 was appointed surgeon-in-chief for the artillery reserves in the Army of the Potomac. He later held positions as the medical inspector of the army, medical director for the 24th Army Corps, and after the war became the staff surgeon for General Phillip Sheridan.During the Civil War, Asch was at important battles including Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, and Appomattox Court House. Altogether, he tended to wounded soldiers during sixteen battles. Right before the war concluded in 1865, Asch attained the rank of major and continued serving in the army even after the conclusion of hostilities. While on Sheridans staff, he came down with yellow fever. Once he recovered, Asch rejoined the army and tended to the wounded during the wars with the Plains Indians.Dr. Asch retired in 1873 and became a renowned expert in the field of laryngology. Mickve Israel [Hope of Israel], one of the oldest Philadelphia synagogues, was founded in the 1740s by Sephardic Jews. Known as the 'Synagogue of the American Revolution, ' its early members included Haym Solomon and the Gratz family. Benjamin Franklin contributed to its first building fund. This was its third building, constructed on 7th Street, north of Arch. Isaac Leeser presided over the congregation from 1829 to 1850; Sabato Morais succeeded him. Morais was its Rabbi for 46 years. The list of corner-stone and door- post purchasers included A. S. Wolf, who purchased the North door-post of the north door for fifteen dollars, in honor of H. Polock. Other luminaries of Philadelphia Jewry participated in the ceremonies. Wolf was treasurer and Gabay of the Congregation. Articles deposited in the cornerstone are listed, including newspapers, coins and tokens dated 1859, "A gold quarter dollar of California mintage, being deposited by Clarence A. Hart, aged 9 years. " The Committee of Arrangement consisted of Edwd. S. Mawson, Joseph L. Moss, and Isaac J. Phillips. Rabbi Morais's discourse is printed. Morais, an abolitionist and founder of the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York, counsels, "If there be pride in us, if the vanity of exhibiting a more sightly structure than others possess, impelled us to designate this place as our future Synagogue...let us then bury first such unholy feelings in the bosom of the earth. " Also printed is a prayer in Hebrew, composed by Morais. OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide [Penn, JTS, YU, NYPL, HUC, Florida Atlantic, NLI) Light edgewear, Very Good Condition (KH-6-63-B-'delx)

Morais, Vamberto
PEQUENA HISTORIA DO ANTI-SEMITISMO
Softbound. 8vo. 387 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In Portuguese. Title translates as: A Short History of Anti-Semitism. The author of this chronological study of anti-Jewish persecution is a Brazilian-born BBC official with a background in classical studies, and the richest part of his 2500-year narrative deals with antiquity-which featured no anti-Semitism in the modern sense. [
] Also notable is the account of Jewish fortunes in Brazil under the relatively tolerant Dutch colonialists and the relatively ineffectual Portuguese Inquisition. [Ineffectually] Massacres and expulsions are viewed as mere unpredictable epidemics. By the same token, in the modern period Morais describes manipulations of popular backwardness like the intelligence-agency, forgery of the Protocols of Zion; yet the emphasis is on the general psychology of stereotypes and ethnocentrism, rather than the deliberate destruction of the Enlightenment tradition from above. [Review from Kirkus Reviews] Subjects: Antisemitism - History. Antissemitismo, - história. Questão judaica. Outer edges lightly soiled. Light foxing on first endpage. Light tear to backstrip. [
] Noah's place in Jewish history is due to his activity as a Jewish liberator and nationalist. His travels in Europe and his thorough acquaintance with Jewish affairs had opened his eyes to the unfortunate situation of the Jewsa homeless people lodged in the midst of other peoples with whom they could never amalgamate. Like the majority of Zionists, Noah advocated the restoration of the Jews to Palestine, their ancient heritage; and though he firmly believed in the coming of the Messiah, he nevertheless held to the view that the restoration of the Jews must come about through the Jews themselves. (EJ 1906) Judahs Lion is considered to be the first English language Zionist Novel (it predates George Eliots Daniel Deronda by thirty years) ; the story concerns the return of an English Jew (Alick) to the Holy Land; it binds together English and Jewish history. This was the last novel the author wrote. Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna (1790-1846) wrote on the plight of English women factory workers, was well known in her time for her novels, essays and poems, was passionate about gardening, a pioneer of deaf education, and also wrote childrens stories. In her later years she defended the rights of Judaism, and in her last three years was a close friend of Moses Montefiore. Subjects: Jews - Fiction. Fiction (English) .
