Newman, Selig
THE CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN A JEW AND A CHRISTIAN: THE FORMER ANSWERING A CHALLENGE THROWN OUT BY THE LATTER, RESPECTING THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE PROPHECIES PREDICTIVE OF THE ADVENT OF JESUS
First edition. Period Boards. 8vo. V, 87 pages. 24 cm. Singerman 1149; Rosenbach 675. A collection of hypothetical dialogues between Christians and Jews on various issues, including: Have the Jews corrupted their Scripture? Dissimilarity between the Christian Messiah and the one foretold by the Prophets, Jesus a Prophet, Reason of the continued exile of the Jews, Comparison between the Law of Moses and that of Jesus; an abrogation of the former, and practicability of the latter, Reasons of the Jews being so determinedly opposed to Christianity, The general expectation of the Messiah and consequent appearance of so many pretenders about the time when Jesus appeared. Selig Newman was a German Hebraist; he "was educated at Posen, but in 1814 went to England and was appointed minister to the Plymouth [Jewish] congregation, teaching Hebrew at the same time at the University of Oxford. His faith debarred him from a professorship, but among his pupils were numbered many distinguished Christian and Jewish scholars. While in London Newman took part in a spirited debate with some Christians on the Messianic prophecies. At an advanced age he sailed for America and settled in New York, gaining a livelihood as teacher and writer. In 1850 he published a work entitled 'The Challenge Accepted, ' consisting of a series of dialogues between a Jew and a Christian respecting the fulfilment of the prophecies on the advent of the Messiah. He published also: 'Emendations of the English Version of the Old Testament, ' 1839; a 'Hebrew and English Lexicon, ' 1841; and a Hebrew grammar, which was much used for elementary instruction among English Jews. SUBJECT (S) : Messiah -- Prophecies. OCLC lists 15 copies worldwide (American Antiquarian Society, National Library of Israel) . Very good condition in very basic period binding. (AMR-38-2-D) xx

Nielsen, Niels.
EPISTOLA TIL VEL-ÆDLE OG VEL-FORNEMME HERR MERCATOR OG BLADSCRIVER NATHANSON
Original Wraps. 12mo. 6 pages. 18 cm. First edition. In Danish, with Latin and French. Short 'Epistle to the distinguished merchant and writer Nathanson' written under a pseudonym, pouring scorn on Nathanson for his conservative positions. "Nathanson was editor of the 'Berlingske Tidende' from 1838 to 1858 and from 1865 to 1866. A brief residence in England had developed in him a strong love for constitutional monarchy, and as the editor of the official organ of the Conservative party he fought a sharp polemical warfare against the National Liberals, who often made him the target for wit which not infrequently was poisoned with malice. His clever management of the paper, however, won him the stanch support of his party, and under him the 'Berlingske Tidende' rapidly grew in importance. " - JE 1906. "Mendel Levin Nathanson (17801868) , was a "Danish merchant and editor. Born in Altona, Nathanson went to Copenhagen at the age of 12 to join relatives. In 1798 he settled down as a wholesale draper and until 1831 was a prosperous businessman. Later on he wrote works on economics and in 1838 became editor of the Berlingske Tidende, making it the leading newspaper in Denmark. Nathanson was a tireless exponent of the emancipation of Danish Jews. Through his initiative the Jewish Free School for boys was founded in Copenhagen in 1805 and five years later a similar school for girls. He organized the administration of the Jewish community, favoring the religious Reform movement, and had a large share in the Danish government's edict of March 29, 1814 which gave the Jews equal rights. His writings on economics are still studied, especially his historical and statistical presentation of Denmark's administration of public revenues up to 1836. Of special Jewish interest is his history of the Jews in Denmark, Historisk Fremstilling af Jødernes Forhold og Stilling I Danmark (1860) . " - EJ 2008. Subjects: Nathanson, M. L. (Mendel Levin) , 1780-1868. Denmark Politics 19th century. OCLC lists 5 copies (Harvard, Saint Olaf, Danish Natl Cat, British Libr, Paris Bsg) , only 2 in the US. Nikelsburger, Jacob
KOUL JACOB IN DEFENCE OF THE JEWISH RELIGION: CONTAINING THE ARGUMENTS OF THE REV. C.F. FREY, ONE OF THE COMMITTEE OF THE LONDON SOCIETY FOR THE CONVERSION OF THE JEWS, AND ANSWERS THERETO
1st American Edition. Original Boards. 8vo. 79 pages. 23 cm. The First Published Jewish Response to Missionaries in America. In English, with some Hebrew. Singerman 0260. Kol Yaakov = Koul Jacob, in Defence of the Jewish Religion. Nikelsburger takes up the cudgels with an apostate Jew, Rev. Frey, so intent on converting his former coreligionists to Christianity that he is willing to take liberties with Scripture. Frey [to whom Niklsburger is responding here] was appointed agent of the ASMCJ [The American Society for Meliorating the Condition of the Jews, a conversionist organization], in 1822, and during that and the following year he travelled through the South and New England collecting money and establishing many local chapters
.In January, 1823, the ASMCJ began publishing a periodical called Israels Advocate
.The emergence of the ASMCJ and the considerable support that it had within the Christian community was a cause of concern to the Jews and they responded to it. The first Jewish literary response to the missionaries came in 1816, the year that Frey had arrived in America, with the publication of an American edition of Jacob Nikelsburgers Koul Jacob. Nickelsburger had published ins booklet in Liverpool in 1813 as a rebuttal to a series of pamphlets written by Frey and published bu the Londton Society on the subject of the messiah. The work contains a refutation of the christological interpretatiions of a number of messianic sections of the Bble. Nikelsburger couched his argument in a moderate tone, and assured his readers that he had not written his booklet in order to engage in religious controversy, but only because Frey had challenged the Jews to answer his arguments (Berlin, Defending the Faith: Nineteenth-Century American Jewish Writing on Christianity and Jesus, Albany, 1989, pp 7-8) Cancelled institutional bookplate, name on title, Wear to boards, some staining and foxing, nice copy. Memory Laws, Memory Wars: The Politics of the Past in Europe and Russia
8vo, br ed. 338pp. aws against Holocaust denial are perhaps the best-known manifestation of the present-day politics of historical memory. In Memory Laws, Memory Wars, Nikolay Koposov examines the phenomenon of memory laws in Western and Eastern Europe, Ukraine, and Russia and exposes their very different purposes in the East and West. In Western Europe, he shows how memory laws were designed to create a common European memory centred on the memory of the Holocaust as a means of integrating Europe, combating racism, and averting national and ethnic conflicts. In Russia and Eastern Europe, by contrast, legislation on the issues of the past is often used to give the force of law to narratives which serve the narrower interests of nation states and protect the memory of perpetrators rather than victims. This will be essential reading for all those interested in ongoing conflicts over the legacy of the Second World War, Nazism, and communism.
