DER HALTS INDUSTRIAL YORBUKH 1953 = EL INDUSTRIAL MADERERO
Original Illustrated Wraps. 4to. 264, 17 pages. 30 cm. First edition. In Yiddish, with some Spanish. The Wood Industry Yearbook, 1953, published by the Jewish union of the Association of timber industrialists in Argentina. As unlikely as it may seem, Yiddish periodicals devoted to the professional and other interests of particular occupations and trades sometimes contain literary materials. This is either because the members were interested in such matters or the editors (often professional writers) were, or both. Thus, in the Argentinian annual, Der holts-industryal (1896-1956), edited for many years by the writer, G. Sapozhnikov, one finds that stories, poems and essays take up the greater part of each volume. The authors are such celebrated writers as H. Leyvik, Avrom Sutskever, Khayim Grade, Yoysef Opatoshu as well as Argentinian and other South American writers. There are also book reviews and notices in this Oysgabe fun fareyn far holts- un ayzn- industryaln in argentine. The Argentine textile manufacturers were no less literary and the same editor edited their Zamlbukh (q.v.) on the occasion of their association's twenty-fifth anniversary. (Yiddish Literary and LinguisticPeriodicals and Miscellanies, A Selective Annotated Bibliography, by Leonard Prager with the help of A.A. Greenbaum). Includes portrait of Eva Peron, and advertisements for woodworking machines. Subjects: Buenos Aires Yiddish Industrialists Yearbook. Yiddish Buenos Aires Literature. No copies listed on OCLC, but a copy is housed in the Papers of Shmuel Niger at YIVO. Wraps worn, light chipping to edges, small tear along backstrip, internally clean and fresh. Good condition. NERUDA Y SUTZKEVER: DOS POETAS REBELDES
Original Stiff Wrappers. 12mo. 158 pages. 20 cm. First edition. In Spanish. Neruda and Sutzkever: Two Rebel Poets written by Gregory Sapoznikow; translation of the original Yiddish by Itsjok Niborski. This work by the Argentinian Yiddish literary critic and psychoanalyst Gregory Sapoznikow constitutes a dual biography and literary interpretation of parallel experiences of both poets, Sutzkever and Neruda, namely, the strength and poetic development of two partisans in the fight against fascism. Includes translations of select poems by Abraham Sutzveker into Spanish. Although Abraham Sutzkever was born in Lithuania in 1913, he spent his early childhood in Siberia. During World War II he fought against the Germans with the partisans, helped save national cultural treasures and was evacuated from Vilna to Moscow in the middle of the war. Sutzkever immigrated to Israel in 1947, and has earned the title of that countrys foremost Yiddish poet. He founded the Yiddish literary quarterly, Di goldene keyt (The Golden Chain) in 1948. Never forgetting his country and the annihilation of his people in Europe, Sutzkevers writing continues to demonstrate the historical events of the past. He has received the highest literary prizes of both Lithuania and Israel. His poetry and fiction have been translated into many languages, including Hebrew, French, English, German, Russian, Polish and Japanese. Born in 1904 in Chile, Pablo Neruda began writing poetry at an early age and had his first poem published at the age of thirteen. Neruda is best known as a poet, but he served as a consul for the Chilean government and traveled on behalf of the government to Burma, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Singapore, Argentina and Spain. Nerudas close friend, García Lorca, was murdered during the Spanish Civil War and his death affected him greatly. In response to Lorcas murder, Neruda joined the Republican movement in Spain and later in France. In 1939, he was appointed consul for the Spanish emigration in France, and soon after sent to Mexico. There he rewrote his Canto General de Chile, an epic poem about South America. In 1945 he was elected a senator. He openly opposed the then repressive government of Chile and was forced to live underground in his own country for several years. He managed to leave in 1949, but returned in 1952. Throughout his lifetime Neruda continued to write. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. He died in 1973. Subjects: Neruda, Pablo, 1904-1973 - Criticism and interpretation. Sutzkever, Abraham, 1913-2010 - Criticism and interpretation. Lightly shelf wear. Very good condition. (HOLO2-97-46xx)

Sarason, Richard S.
A HISTORY OF THE MISHNAIC LAW OF AGRICULTURE: SECTION THREE, A STUDY OF TRACTATE DEMAI
First edition. Cloth, 8vo. Xx, 289 pages. Part 1: Commentary. 25 cm. The Mishnah, in its "detailed rulings on various matters pertaining to the whole range of everyday life, " writes the author, "makes a larger statement about the cosmos, the human realm, and reason which pervades them both. " He calls for "systematic analysis... Tractate by tractate, paying careful attention to the details out of which the larger picture emerges. " Tractate Demai "sheds crucial light on the Mishnaic law of tithes... And suggests the larger connection between the law of tithing in Zeraim and the law of purities in Tohorot. " The author's investigation into the "structure and history of the ideas in Demai" and the "implications of those ideas for the history of the formation of rabbinic Judaism" begins in this volume with a "systematic literary and substantive commentary to the tractate as a whole... Confronting in minute detail the literary and hermeneutical problems of the sources. " Richard S. Sarason is Professor of Rabbinic Literature and Thought at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. A revision of the author's doctoral dissertation, Brown University, 1977. Series: Studies in Judaism in late antiquity. SUBJECT (S) : Mishnah. Demai -- Commentaries. Tosefta. Demai -- Commentaries. Without dustjacket, as issued. Minor shelfwear; interior pristine.
