Sermons printed in German by orthodox rabbis for a small community in a town of mostly liberal and secular Jews, under the auspice of the authority of the Kingdom. ‎1st Edition Mourlout Lithograph, Signed in the print and produced in the year of the Artist’s death by the legendary French studio. “Emmanuel Mané-Katz (1894–1962) was a Litvak painter born in Kremenchuk, Ukraine, best known for his depictions of the Jewish shtetl in Eastern Europe… he became friends with Pablo Picasso and other important artists, and was affiliated with the art movement known as the School of Paris…” (Wikipedia, 2017) “Mourlot Studios was a commercial print shop founded in 1852 by the Mourlot family and located in Paris, France. It was also known as Imprimerie Mourlot, Mourlot Freres and Atelier Mourlot. Founded by Francois Mourlot, it started off producing wallpaper. Later, his son Jules Mourlot would expand the business to handle the production of chocolate labels for companies such as Chocolat Poulain, as well as ledgers, maps and stationary. Starting in the 1920s, Jules' son, Fernand Mourlot, converted one of the locations into a studio dedicated to printing fine art lithography… In 1945, Pablo Picasso selected the Mourlot studio for his return to the lithographic medium. ‎COPPER RELIEF OF A STUDENT [SIGNED BY ARTIST]‎

‎Copper Relief. 5 X 9 Inches. Framed on Wooden Panel. This Merzer relief depicts a young Jewish boy holding his books with a shtetl in the background. Artist Arieh Merzer was born in 1905 to a Hassidic family in a town not far from Warsaw. Studied in a Heder and Beit Midrash. In 1927 started to create copper reliefs with Jewish motifs and in 1928 exhibited his works for the first time in an exhibition in Warsaw. In 1930 he moved to Paris where he studied and varied his creations which now included universal motifs. Merzer was a committee member of the Jewish Artists Society in Paris. In 1943 moved to Switzerland where he published an album of graphic works around Jewish motifs. In 1945 he immigrated to Eretz Israel and started right away to exhibit his works. During the Independence War he was one of the first artists to settle in Safed where he lived for the rest of his life. Signed by the Artist in both Hebrew and English. (PAINT-1-16)‎

Together with Le Petit Parisien, Le Matin, and Le Journal, it was one of the four major French dailies. In 1890, during the Boulangiste crisis, its circulation first reached one million copies. Five years later, it had a circulation of two million copies, making it the world's largest newspaper” (Wikipedia, 2017) . Illustrated supplement to the French magazine, Le Petit Journal, first published in 1860 by Moïse Maillaud, with supplements, from 1890-1920. The color cover illustration by Henri Meyer (1844-1899) is captioned: "Campement D'Emigrants Juifs A La Gare De Lyon, " and depicts chiefly Eastern European Jews in colorful costumes camped in the streets outside the Gare de Lyon train station in Paris, waiting to Emigrate to America. Attributed to Count Amadeo Preziosi (1816 1882) the "Maltese painter known for his watercolours and prints of the Balkans, Ottoman Empire and Romania. " (Wikipedia, 2017) Painted circa 1865, this work relates very closely to Preziosis celebrated lithograph of the same subject (Rubens no. 2425) which is held in the permanent collection of the Jewish Museum. The Son of a Shinto priest and descendant from a long line of Shinto priests, the author Abram Kotsuji (1899-1973) was a Japanese Hebraist and ardent philo-Semite who founded the Institute of Biblical Research at the University of Tokyo. The present work is his Phd dissertation. During the Holocaust years Kotsuji greatly assisted the hundreds of rabbis and yeshiva students from Eastern Europe (including the entire Mir Yeshiva) who escaped before the German onslaught to Kobe, Japan and later to Japanese-occupied Shanghai. In 1959 Kotsuji formally converted to Judaism in Jerusalem. Internally some age toning but very clean.Very Good Condition. (HOLO-114-17a)‎
