He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Warsaw in 1922 with a thesis on 'The Jewish Question in the Kingdom of Poland During the Paskiewicz Era.' Historians who studied under Shatzky include Lucy Dawidowicz.Shatzky enlisted in Pilsudski's Legion and fought with distinction in the First World War; he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Manosque is a town in the department of Basses-Alpes, S. E. France. Jews are mentioned in Manosque from 1240. In 1261 the community was already sufficiently numerous to maintain two butcher's stores. Before the Black Death in 1348, there were about 30 Jewish families in Manosque. The Jews owned at least one synagogue and cemetery. They lived in their own street, the Carriera Judaica, on the site of the present Rue Bon-Repos. When an epidemic broke out in 1364, the services of a Jewish physician were still called for. However, from 1370 on there were frequent anti-Jewish disturbances, the most violent in 1455 and 1495. In 1498 the town expelled its Jews. (EJ 2007) Subjects: Jews -- France -- Manosque. A series of papers connected to a controversy in 1997 over changes in the board of Trustees, and in 2004 over changes in the seating plan of the Synagogue which would have allowed both women and men to sit on the main floor, changing a tradition that dates back to the consecration of the original synagogue building on Mill Street in 1730. Extensively researched reports submitted by a congregant on the history of the rituals around seating at Shearith Israel, and the importance of continuity of their traditions. He argues that this change would move the service away from its unique Western Sephardic style, and closer to that of Modern Orthodoxy, an Ashkenazi movement. Also included are various papers connected to celebrations and special events at the Synagogue, and brochures on the buildings history, legacy and capital campaign. Some papers are folded. 24 items. Very Good Italian Original typescript document signed by Seyh Süleyman Kaslioglu. 30x21 cm. In Italian. Sealed by 'Rhodes Müftülügü'. 1 p. "He was the leader of the Turkish Community in Rhodes, the mufti, clergyman. During the Second World War in 1943, Nazi Germany eventually invaded Greece and moved from there to the Aegean Islands. Thus, soon after, Rhodes fell into the hands of the Nazis. They were confiscating the property of the Jews living on the island and closing the synagogues. Under these circumstances, Süleyman Kaslioglu offered to keep the Torah and other Hebrew books he received from clergy and citizens in the Murad Reis Mosque. But most of the Jews were taken to the concentration camp. Of the 1673 Jews who went to Rhodes from the concentration camp, only 151 were able to return.
