1st Yiddish edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers. 12mo. 95 pages, 14 cm. In Yiddish with some Russian. Title translates to Lublin Extermination-Camp Majdanek. Soviet war correspondent and poet Konstantin Simonovs booklet on the atrocities of the Majdanek camp, published simultaneously in several languages, was only the second monograph published on the atrocities at Majdanek. Simonov (1915-1979) was a highly decorated poet, novelist, playright, and war correspondent whose works were widely known (Wikipedia, 2018) . A Polish-Soviet Special Criminal Court was established in Lublin in August 1944 in order to investigate the Nazi crimes in the Majdanek extermination camp, with Simonov covering the proceedings as the basis for this work. The Majdanek concentration camp was established on Heinrich Himmler's order and operated from October 1, 1941 until it was liberated by the Soviet Army on July 22, 1944. It is known to be the best preserved Nazi concentration camp of the Holocaust, as the Germans did not have enough time to destroy the evidences of their crimes. The Commission for investigating the German crimes was established in August 1944 and soon they published this booklet in several languages. Despite of the importance of this statement it must be mentioned that the Commission made many erroneous assumptions regarding the duration of the camp or number of people killed at Majdanek, probably because they were motivated rather by political and propaganda agenda than by a search for historical facts. The total number of the victims is still controversial, in this report 1.5 million victims of different nationalities were counted, however according to the latest researches there were 79, 000 victims, 59, 000 of whom were Jews. La protagonista di questo romanzo, Deborah, vive nel villaggio polacco di Jelhitz, agli inizi del Novecento, con i genitori e il fratello Michael. Il padre, Reb Avram Ber, è un rabbino seguace della corrente chassidica, che la madre, Reitzela, figlia di un rabbino erudito e di rango superiore, disprezza. Reitzela disprezza il marito, incapace di farsi valere, e anche la figlia, semplicemente per il fatto che sia femmina, poco attraente e quindi difficile da maritare. Mentre Michael riceve una buona istruzione ed è libero di muoversi a piacimento, Deborah è relegata in casa, a sbrigare faccende: non le è permesso di studiare, e nemmeno di leggere, quindi invidia il fratello con tutta lanima, e sogna di sfuggire a una vita limitata ai pettegolezzi e al mercato. Quando però il rabbino si trasferisce con la famiglia a Varsavia, Deborah viene a trovarsi in un ambiente non meno squallido e repressivo. Solo dopo lincontro con una donna che la inizia allideologia socialista, e la introduce in un circolo semiclandestino, comincia a nutrire la speranza di dare uno scopo alla propria vita. Alle riunioni rivede Simon, un giovane attraente, intelligente, conosciuto in precedenza. I due si innamorano ma non sospettano nemmeno lontanamente che il sentimento che nutrono sia reciproco; per di più, quando scopre che Deborah è la figlia del rabbino, Simon le proibisce di tornare agli incontri politici, gettandola in uno stato di assoluta depressione. Temendo di impazzire, la ragazza accetta di sposare un tagliatore di diamanti di Anversa, che si rivela presto pigro e incapace di sollevarsi da una condizione di fame e povertà. Linstabilità mentale della giovane donna si aggrava, e il romanzo si conclude con un sogno spaventoso: Deborah torna a Varsavia, e scopre che i genitori non abitano più lì. Si risveglia dallincubo solo per ritrovarsi accanto al marito, nella casa vuota e silenziosa, in preda alla disperazione.

E i personaggi veri che popolano Leoncin e Bilgoraj - il padre sognatore, ingenuo, fragile, affascinato dal chassidismo con la sua vena mistica, le sue danze e i suoi canti, ma incapace di mantenere la famiglia a un livello accettabile; la madre, donna colta e intellettuale; il nonno, rabbino autorevole e benestante; la nonna, regina di una cucina generosa e affollata - sono, se possibile, ancora più vivi e originali di quelli dei romanzi, come se l'autore, mentre scrive, stesse rivivendo quei giorni lontani, e li raccontasse con lo stesso sguardo critico, ironico, ma affettuoso e tollerante che gli appartiene sempre. Una storia vera, calata nell'ambiente ristretto di due villaggi d'antan, che in realtà rivela un intero universo.
