‎RARE collection of studies on Philo of Alexandria by Leopold Jakob Jehuda Treitel (1845-1931), a renowned German-Jewish classical scholar whose main academic and scholarly interest revolved around Philo's philosophy. He was the last rabbi of the Jewish community in the town of Laupheim, then Württemberg, Southern Germany. Treitel wrote his PhD thesis on Philo in 1870 in Latin ('De Philonis Judaei Sermone Dissertatio), and published several books and articles on Philo and his philosophy, culminating in his magnus opus 'Die gesamte Theologie und Philosophie Philos von Alexandria', published in 1923. Treitel claimed that Philo employed 'rabbinic methods and patterns of interpretation, although Greek methodology did make a deep impact upon the content'. Influenced by Frankel and Graetz, Treitel attempted to demonstrate the importance of Philo's philosophy to Jewish thinking, particularly because of Philo's emphasis on the social order of Jewish life and the universal interpretation of the Jewish scriptures, and also because he 'did not imply an abrogation of the law, but rather to the contrary its wider dissemination and thus affirmation'. 235x155mm. ‎Leo Trepp, 1913 in Mainz geboren, studierte Philosophie und Philologie an den Universitäten Frankfurt/Main und Berlin. Die gleichzeitige rabbinische Ausbildung führte1936 am Rabbinerseminar in Berlin zu seiner Ordination zum Rabbiner. Anschließend Landesrabbiner von Oldenburg bis zur Kristallnacht im November 1938: Kurz darauf ins KZ Sachsenhausen verschleppt, wurde er infolge eines Einspruchs des inzwischen verstorbenen britischen Chief Rabbi Dr. Hertz nach einiger Zeit entlassen und emigrierte nach England. Von dort ging er in die USA und amtierte als Rabbiner in verschiedenen Gemeinden. 1951 - 1983 Professor für Philosophie und Geisteswissenschaften am Napa College (Kalifornien). Seit 1988 Honorarprofessor an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. ‎Édition originale posthume, très rare. Un des quelques exemplaires imprimés sur grand papier de Hollande.Ouvrage antisémite où le judaïsme est assimilé à un "molochisme" (culte fondé sur les sacrifices humains) écrit vers la fin des années 1860 par le futur communard Gustave Tridon (1841-1871) qui publia à la même époque Les Hébertistes avec une préface de Blanqui, saisi en 1865.L'auteur, avocat et journaliste, un des plus fidèles compagnons de Blanqui, membre de l'Internationale, délégué au Comité des 20 arrondissements et signataire de l'Affiche rouge, maintes fois condamné et emprisonné sous l'Empire, fut élu à la Commune par le Ve arrondissement après sa démission à l'Assemblée Nationale où la Côte d'Or l'avait envoyé siéger. Ayant échappé aux Versaillais, il put s'enfuir à Bruxelles où il mourut à 30 ans le 31 août 1871, huit jours après son arrivée.Bel exemplaire.‎

The results of his historical research into the community's origins were published in Das Frcheste Vorkommen der Juden in Deutschland; Juden in romischen Trier (1931) , which threw new light on the subject, dating the settlement of Jews in Trier to the end of the 3rd and early 4th century C. Born to a rabbinical family in Kutno, Poland, Trunk (1905-1981) mostly wrote in Yiddish, and was "the last major representative of the Eastern European Jewish historians who were trained before the Holocaust. " Trunk earned a master's degree in Warsaw in 1929, and there was part of a group that later became a branch of YIVO. He taught in Bialystok and Warsaw until WWII began, and then sought refuge in the Soviet Union for the duration. After a few years in Israel and elsewhere, Trunk emigrated to the US in 1954, eventually becoming chief archivist at YIVO. (EJ, 2007) Has dust jacket. Good condition. (Holo2-12-9)‎
