RUINS OF THE JEWISH SYNAGOGUE ON SUTTER ST.
No date (1906) . Original illustrated white stereoview card with left-eye and right-eye black-and-white photographs of two men in hats looking at the ruins of Synagogue Emanuel on Sutter St. In San Francisco, CA. 1 card; 17.5 x 8.5 cm. Synagogue Emanuel is one of the two oldest Jewish congregations in California. During the Gold Rush in 1849, a small group of Jews held the first High Holy Days services on the west coast of the United States in San Francisco. This group of traders and merchants founded Congregation Emanu-El sometime in 1850, and its charter was issued in April, 1851. The 16 signatories were mostly German Jews from Bavaria (Wikipedia 2017) . The 1906 San Francisco earthquake was a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 that shook the whole region. Devastating fires soon broke out in the city and lasted for several days. As a result, about 3, 000 people died and over 80% of the city of San Francisco was destroyed. The events are remembered as one of the worst and deadliest natural disasters in the history of the United States. The death toll remains the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in Californias history and high in the lists of American urban disasters (Wikipedia 2017) . SUBJECT(S) : Stereoview, Photography, Synagogues, San Francisco, Earthquakes. Some staining. Some rubbing. Slight toning. Very good condition. (AMR-53-3)

1st edition. Original printed paper wrappers, 8vo, 31 pages. Includes illustrations. 23 cm. In German. A Weimar-period response to growing numbers of attacks on kosher slaughtering, this booklet includes illustration on shehitah (kosher slaughtering) and addresses the subject from the both religious perspective and from the perspective of animal rights. The title-page further describes is as "eine gemeinverständliche Darstellung von Rabbiner Dr. J. Unna, Mannheim (a basic understanding by rabbi Unna). " The verso of the title-page states the viewpoint of the book beginning "ritual slaughtering is a religious rule of Judaism. A ban on the shehitah would therefore put all faithful Jews in most difficult position." The text is in six chapters accompanied by a two-part full-page illustration. In Europe of the interwar years, restrictions were imposed on ritual slaughter, by various anti-Semitic organizations acting under the guise of prevention of cruelty to animals. Includes index.
