THE KVUTZA: THE STRUCTURE, PROBLEMS, AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE COLLECTIVE SETTLEMENTS IN PALESTINE
First edition. Original paper wrappers with red font. 8vo. 74 pages; 23 cm. A Holocaust-era in-depth analysis of the pros and cons of the Kvutza, a communal settlement, in Palestine by Shalom Wurm, author and one of the founders of the Bet Alpha settlement in Emek Yizreel. One is the secular equivalent of the relation between church and state-in this case between ideology and community. The other is the problem of leadership. Includes several black-and-white photographs, some of kvutza scenery and one of people playing instruments. SUBJECT (S) : Zionism, Agricultural societies, Palestine. Significant dampstaining. Minimal folds and tears. Some stains and slight toning of original paper wrappers. Good condition. (zion-12-32)

WWII: Judaica
Diary of a Jewish Chaplain in the Canadian Armed Forces
Halifax 1944-1945. Hardcover. Very good. 4to. Commercial ruled journal. Textured black leather boards heavily scuffed with tears and some loss to spine ends. Backstrip attached but fragile. All edges marbled. Handwriting in pen and some pencil to approximately one half of the pages; 67 closely written pages in total. Approx. 10000 words /-.

Neat and meticulous handwritten daily journal written by a Halifax rabbi serving as chaplain for the Canadian armed forces: for one recorded service "42 soldiers present. 1 airman. Did not have chance to notify Air Force nor Navy re: Services." Beginning in September 1944 and ending in May 1945 the author records his public activities and services at the Robie St. Synagogue and elsewhere e.g.: served as cantor but unsatisfied with his own singing; only cake & coffee at the Purim social -- "Hamentaschen didn't arrive"; his advice and counsel to individual soldiers "Spoke to Major Lyons re Victor Morgan / promised to get him transferred so he can study Hebrew"; and the occasional purely personal note "Deanna Durbin is still tops."

The journal's author names many officers and peers though not himself: "lunch with Greenspan" likely refers to Rabbi Abraham Greenspan of Halifax; the "Capt. Dr. Cass" who read the Torah "fairly well. He also blew the Shofar" is certainly Rabbi Samuel Cass. Visiting English evangelist Bryan Green gave a speech "under the auspices of Br. Ministery of Information. No revelation";

The rabbi records speeches and discussions -- sometimes heated -- on "Assimiliation" Jewish denominations Jewish education "How to Get Home for the High Holidays" as well as his trips to military camps and hospitals in Windsor and Debert advocacy for men A.W.O.L. or otherwise awaiting discipline or sentencing; distribution of books and pamphlets; and continual efforts to maintain and improve attendance at services. But not conspicuously the shadow under which these events took place and which certainly must have been on his mind. hardcover books

Wyszkowski, Charles
A COMMUNITY IN CONFLICT: AMERICAN JEWRY DURING THE GREAT EUROPEAN IMMIGRATION [INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR]
Publishers cloth. 8vo. XIX, 363 pages. 23 cm. First edition. This book explores reactions to issues viewed as of major importance by the editors of The American Hebrew of New York in the years 1879-1884, 1894-1898 and 1903-1908. Since its inception in 1879 and until World War 1, the Hebrew was a leading Anglo-Jewish weekly, which helped to mold the structure and attitudes of the community's English-speaking sectors. Responsible for it was the unique character of the nine-member founding editorial board, mostly of national prominence in religious and civic life. They remained anonymous until 1929. Desire for total integration into American society as well as fear of assimilation and pride in Jewish particularism produced a community in conflict. (Publishers description) . Inscribed by the author in English (and Hebrew) on first endpage. Subjects: Jews - United States. Jews, East European - United States. Immigrants - United States. Jews - Europe, Eastern - Migrations. United States - Emigration and immigration. United States - Ethnic relations. Fresh. Good + condition. (AMR-39-21)

YA'AKOV [JACOB] GOLDENTHAL, (1815-1868).
[IMPORTANT ARABIC GRAMMAR FOR TALMUDISTS] Sefer Maspik: Li-yedi'at dikduk lashon 'Aravi. [= Grammaire arabe ecrite en Hebreu: Al'usage des Hebreux de l'Orient].
Very Good Hebrew Contemporary 1/4 leather bdg. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Hebrew with interspersed with Arabic; a preface in French. [xvi], 144 p. Goldenthal was an Austrian Orientalist; born at Brody, Galicia, April 16, 1815; died at Vienna Dec. 28, 1868; educated at the University of Leipsic. In June, 1843, he became principal of the Jewish school at Kishinef, Bessarabia, and held the office for some years. He was appointed professor of rabbinical and Oriental languages at the University of Vienna in Sept. 1849, and held the chair until his death. Upon the nomination of Hammer-Purgstall, he was elected a corresponding member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences, and member of the Asiatic Societies of Germany, of Paris, and of London. His chief literary activity consisted in editing the following manuscripts: "Mozene ?ede?," a treatise on philosóphical ethics by Al-Ghazali, translated into Hebrew by Abraham ibn ?asdai, with an introduction on the lives and works of Al-Ghazali and Ibn ?asdai, 1838. "Bi'ur ibn Roshd," Todrosi's Hebrew translation of Averroes' commentary on Aristotle's "Rhetorica," with a historical and philosophical introduction, 1842. "Mesharet Mosheh," commentary by Kalonymus on Maimonides' system of Divine Providence, with his explanation of Ps. xix. and xxxvii., 1845. "Maftea?," methodology of the Talmud by Nissim ben Jacob of Kairwan, with an introduction, notes, and references, 1847. "Mi?dash Me'a?," Moses Rieti's didactic poem on ancient philosophy and the history of Jewish literature, with an Italian and Hebrew preface, 1851 (see "Allg. Zeit. des Jud." 1859, p. 124). Goldenthal further published a catalog of Hebrew manuscripts in the Imperial Library of Vienna, 1854, and an Arabic grammar in Hebrew for the use of the Oriental Jews, with a French preface, 1857. Volume i. of the "Denkschriften" of the Vienna Academy of Sciences contains his "Beiträge zu einem Sprachvergleichenden Rabbinisch-Philosophischen Wörterbuche." He issued "Das Neue Zion," a monthly periodical, Leipsic, Nisan, 1845, of which only one number appeared. Another periodical which he edited, "Das Morgenland," was also short-lived. (Jewish Encyclopedia). In his Hebrew preface, Goldenthal notes that knowledge of Arabic is particularly important for Talmudists, illustrating his point by a passage from Rabbenu Nissim's commentary to Tractate Shabbat found in a manuscript in the Palatine Library of Vienna. They werent published or shown publicly until this exhibition by Yad Vashem and the Smithsonian Institute in 1988. Although Josts intention in documenting the horrors of ghetto life were never made explicit, his sentiments are related in the beginning of the booklet. I didnt want to upset my family. I thought, What sort of world is this? I didnt tell my army comrades anything either. Later on, too, when they burnt down the Ghetto, we didnt pay any attention.
