[Einhorn, David] Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel
GESÄNGE FÜR DEN ÖFFENTLICHEN JÜDISCHEN GOTTESDIENST: AUS VERSCHIEDENEN LIEDERSAMMLÜNGEN ZUSAMMENGETRAGEN
1st edition. Period-style half leather with marbled boards, 12mo, 93 pages. In German. Singerman 1749. The David Einhorn Hymnal. Title translates as Songs for Jewish Public Worship. The Kneseth Israel (Philadelphia) board minutes from May 4, 1862, note that: A communication from Dr. Einhorn was handed in and reads as follows: To the respectable board of directors of Keneseth Israel! Since there is a decided shortage of hymn books not only in our reform congregation but in all the others in America, I am determined to put together a collection of songs, about 80-90 pages. They should be put to use during the service, and I will give them to the congregation if the congregation is wiling to undertake the printing....I suggest to the respectable board to take over the publication of the hymn collection and let me know soon, that the printing can start. Philadelphia, April 28, 1862. Dr. Einhorn. Decided, to accept the communication from Dr. Einhorn and make preparations for the printing [translation of minutes located at KI and at HUC in Cincinnati]. Then, according to the minutes of the next meeting, the board decided to fund the printing, which included 100 bound volumes. Reform Liturgy Scholar Judah Cohen has noted that the hymnal was almost entirely Einhorn, at least based on these records, and created in his view as a service to the growing reform movement. Rabbi Dr. Lance Sussman, Senior Rabbi at Kenesseth Israel in Philadelphia and a scholar on the history of the Synagogue and on 19th Century American Jewish history, reported on the H-Judaic internet listserv that I believe from the time Einhorn arrived in Baltimore from Europe in 1855, KI was in touch with him about its music program. KI had a gentile organist, William Fischer, who partnered with Einhorn both before and during Einhorn's time in Philly. Einhorn had fled Baltimore on April 19, 1861, following his delivery of an anti-Slavery sermon; a mob sought to tar and feather and he fled to Philadelphia where he became spiritual leader of Congregation Keneseth Israel. SUBJECT(S) : Jewish hymns. Reform Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Jewish hymns. Reform Judaism Liturgy and ritual. OCLC: 9033019 OCLC lists only 6 copies worldwide (HUC, Gratz, Penn, Princeton, Princeton Theological, LBI). Far scarcer than famous first American Jewish hymnal published 20 years earlier in Charleston, which shows up with 9 holdings in OCLC. Institutional perforation stamp to title and final leaf, one other margin stamp. Otherwise very clean, an attractive copy of this exceedingly scarce and important American Jewish Hymnal by one of the 2 most import leaders of American Reform in the 19th Century (the other being Isaac Wise) . [Ferguson, Robert]
NO PROTESTANT-PLOT, OR, THE PRESENT PRETENDED CONSPIRACY OF PROTESTANTS AGAINST THE KING AND GOVERNMENT DISCOVERED TO BE A CONSPIRACY OF THE PAPISTS AGAINST THE KING AND HIS PROTESTANT-SUBJECTS. [WITH] THE SECOND PART OF NO PROTESTANT PLOT
Original Wraps. 8vo. 37; 32 pages. 19 cm. First edition. No Protestant-Plot, or The present pretended conspiracy of Protestants against the King and Government, discovered to be a conspiracy of the Papists against the King and his Protestant-Subjects, for R. Lett, 1681; The Second Part of No Protestant Plot, for R. Smith, 1682. A third part was published, 1682, not included here. The first and second parts have been attributed to the Earl of Shaftesbury, but Ferguson affirmed he wrote all three. Both published anonymously, attributed to Robert Ferguson (16371714) , a Scottish presbyterian minister, conspirator and political pamphleteer, known as "the Plotter". Having gained a reputation as a theological controversialist and become a person of importance among the Nonconformists, he attracted the notice of the Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury and the party which favoured the exclusion of the Duke of York from the throne, and he began to write political pamphlets just at the time when the feeling against the Roman Catholics was at its height. In 1680 he wrote 'A Letter to a Person of Honour concerning the 'Black Box, ' in which he supported the claim of the Duke of Monmouth to the crown against that of the Duke of York. He took an active part in the controversy over the Exclusion Bill, and claimed to be the author of the whole of the pamphlet 'No Protestant Plot' (1681) , parts of which are usually ascribed to Shaftesbury. Ferguson was deeply implicated in the Rye House Plot, although he asserted that he had frustrated both this and a subsequent attempt to assassinate the king, and he fled to the Netherlands with Shaftesbury in 1682, returning to England early in 1683. For his share in another plot against Charles II he was declared an outlaw, after which he entered into communication with Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, Monmouth and other malcontents. Ferguson then took a leading part in organizing the rising of 1685. Subjects: Charles II, King of England, 1630-1685. Catholic Church -- Controversial literature. Government, Resistance to - Great Britain - Early works to 1800. Controversial literature. Great Britain - Politics and government - 1660-1688. Title page of first part loose with some edge chipping. Light soiling and light foxing throughout, overall fresh and clean. Good condition. (SPEC-40-35)

Does Jewish Power Control the World Press? 18. Does This Explain Jewish Political Power? 19. The All-Jewish Mark on "Red Russia" 20. Jewish Testimony in Favor of Bolshevism. Original single volume as originally issued; later joined by vols 2,3 & 4. Henry Ford, a noted anti-semite, had a close association with Dearborn, MI. Ford did not write the articles. He expressed his opinions verbally to his executive secretary, Ernest Liebold, and to William J. Cameron. Cameron had the main responsibility for expanding these opinions into article form. Liebold was responsible for collecting more material to support the articles. The Dearborn Independent, also known as The Ford International Weekly, was a weekly newspaper established in 1901, and published by Henry Ford from 1919 through 1927. The paper reached a circulation of 900,000 by 1925, second only to the New York Daily News, largely due to a quota system for promotion imposed on Ford dealers. Lawsuits regarding antisemitic material published in the paper caused Ford to close it, and the last issue was published in December 1927. The publication's title was derived from the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan. Derived largely from information found posted on line: Convinced that "bankers" and "the Jews" were responsible for a whole range of things he didn't like, from the world war to short skirts to jazz music, Henry Ford used his newspaper, the Dearborn Independent, to carry on an active anti-Semitic campaign. Between 1920 and 1922 a series of articles denounced all things Jewish. While officially apologizing for the articles in 1927, Ford's anti-Jewish sentiments ran deep. In January 1919, Henry Ford began publication of the Dearborn Independent, a small community weekly he had purchased the previous year. Carrying the subtitle, The Chronicler of the Neglected Truth, the paper primarily served as a forum for Henry Ford's views. Each issue of the Independent carried "Mr. Ford's Own Page," an editorial expressing his opinions, written by William J. Cameron. The Ford Motor Company pressured car dealers to buy multiple subscriptions and hand out copies to customers. The newspaper was popular, and circulation reached 900,000 in 1926. The Dearborn Independent would, most likely, have remained a sidebar in Ford's biography were it not for a controversial series that began on May 22, 1920 and lasted for several years. Appearing on the front page every week, "The International Jew: The World's Problem" examined a purported conspiracy launched by Jewish groups to achieve world domination. The basis for the articles was a notorious forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an anti-Semitic hoax, first published in Russia in 1903. Many have accused Ford's personal secretary, Ernest Liebold, of being the source of the campaign, and Liebold's anti-Semitic views are well documented. William Cameron, editor of the Independent, was an enthusiastic supporter of the publication of the anti-Semitic diatribes. However, Ford's own attitudes towards Jews were the major reason for the publication of "The International Jew." His anti-Semitic beliefs formed along several strands from his upbringing, attitudes, and personal beliefs. A common stereotype at the time led some people to assume that Jews controlled the international banking system; that belief may have fed his anti-Jewish feelings. The publication of "The International Jew" caused an uproar. In some quarters, such as anti-immigrant and nativist groups, the series confirmed their own beliefs. Others were appalled by the series, published demands for a retraction, removed the paper from public libraries, and promoted a boycott of Ford automobiles. Some Ford dealers refused to carry the paper. Responding to this pressure, Ford halted publication of the anti-Jewish series in January 1922, only to start it up again less than a year later. Previous owner's name, pocket on rear blank endpaper, no other markings, an excellent copy Very Good Condition. (HOLO2-63-21D)

[France] Klarsfeld, Serge
MEMORIAL TO THE JEWS DEPORTED FROM FRANCE, 1942-1944: DOCUMENTATION OF THE DEPORTATION OF THE VICTIMS OF THE FINAL SOLUTION IN FRANCE
1st English Language edition. 4to. Original wrappers, xxxix + 663 pages. Illustrations throughout. In English. The book by Serge Klarsfeld,
contains vital statistics of some 76, 000 Jews deported from France. Together with his wife Beate, the Paris-based Serge Klarsfeld has published lists of Jews deported from France and Belgium over the last decades. He was the leading Nazi hunter in France
. France was one of the more liberal nations in opening its doors to Jewish refugees from Poland, Romania, and Germany. Some 350, 000 Jews were living in France when the Germans invaded the country in June 1940. More than half of them were refugees from Germany who had arrived during the 1930s. Many were French citizens whose families had lived in France for centuries and who were fully assimilated. Others had come to France, often from Eastern Europe, to seek a better life and escape from antisemitism. Approximately 76, 000 Jews were deported from France between 1942 and 1944. Most went to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where the vast majority were exterminated on arrival. Klarsfeld's book is a most startling document. Nearly the size of the Manhattan (NYC) telephone directory, it lists nearly 76, 000 names of Jews deported to Eastern Europe or killed in France. Names are listed in alphabetical order, according to each of the 80 convoys. Family name, first name, birth date, place of birth, and nationality are recorded for every person. Klarsfeld also provides a detailed history of each convoy. (Jewishgen 2018) SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Persecutions -- France. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) -- Registers of dead -- France. [Goniondz]
SEFER YIZKOR GONYONDZ = YIZKER BUKH GONYONDZ. OUR HOMETOWN GONIONDZ.
1st edition, later paper wrappers, 8vo. 808 + xx columns, illustrations throughout. In Hebrew, with an English title page and introduction. We consider it important and necessary to represent a review of our Memorial-Book to the children and friends of the Goniondz Society who do not read Yiddish or Hebrew. Let all of them get an idea about the Hometown of their parents and relatives and together with them hold dear the memory of the small Jewish community, that went to martyrdom during the black period of the bestial Nazi rule. 6, 000, 000 Jews perished during the 2nd World War in Eastern and Central Europe. Many bigger and smaller towns were immortalized in memorial books. They stand out like living symbols, spiritual monuments for the coming generations. Our beloved Goniondz has surely earned such a monument. The Jewish Goniondz was very lively and interesting. The small Jewish population was very active, established many parties and clubs and gave to the world outstanding intellectuals in many fields, both Jewish and general. Citizens of Goniondz are spread out all over the world. The majority of them live in the United States and in Israel, where they have established many societies and cooperatives in the socio-philanthropic field, giving financial and moral support to needy townspeople. The Memorial-Book portrays to a great extent the manysided life of Goniondz before its destruction. (from book) SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Poland -- Gonia? Dz. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) . Ethnic relations. OCLC: 18096280, OCLC lists 29 copies worldwide. Cover is missing, outside pages have some wear and discoloration, internally very good, Good Condition overall. (YIZ-20-2)

[Harry Barnsteins Copy- Ramsgate College Affair] Troki, Isaac Ben Abraham. Wagenseil, Johann Christoph, Ed.
SEFER HIZUK EMUNAH
Period Cloth, small 12mo, 100 leaves ; 16 cm. In Hebrew. Harry Barnsteins copy, with his ownership signature H. Barnstein, on the front end paper. Asher hiber Rabi Yitshak bar Avraham z. L asher kevar nidpas be-Altorf `a. Y. Ha-adon Yoan Kristofer Vogenzeil. Isaac ben Abraham Troki (1533-1594) was a Karaite polemical writer
. He was instructed in Bible and Hebrew literature by the Karaite scholar Zephaniah ben Mordecai, and in Latin and Polish literatures by Christian teachers. Moving in Christian circles, Troki was often called upon to take part in religious controversies; and this prompted him to study religious philosophy and Christian theology and to acquaint himself with the tenets of the various Christian sects. In the course of his studies he became interested in the anti-Christian and anti-Jewish writings of his contemporaries and compatriots Nicholas Paruta, Martin Czechowic, and Simon Budni. To refute the arguments of the writers against the Jewish religion and to show the superiority of Judaism, Troki wrote his epoch-making Hizzuk Emunah
.. The author begins by demonstrating that Jesus was not the Messiah predicted by the Prophets
..Troki died before completing his work, the index
. The work was first published, with a Latin translation, by Wagenseil in his Tela Ignea Satanae (Freiberg, 1681) , and was reprinted in Amsterdam (1705) , Jerusalem (1845) and Leipsic (1857) . It was also translated into Judaeo-German (Amsterdam, 1717) , into English by Mocatta (London, 1851) , into German by David Deutsch (Sohran, 1865, 2d ed. 1873, with the Hebrew text) and into Spanish, the last-mentioned translation being extant in manuscript. Through its Latin translation the Hizzuk Emunah became the object of passionate debates in Christian circles; and its arguments against Christianity were used by all freethinkers. Two hymns by Isaac Troki are incorporated in the Karaite liturgy; he is also said to have composed works on Karaite ritual law. For more on Troki and this work, see: Furst, Gesch. Des Karaert. Iii. 30 et seq. ; Neubauer, Aus der Petersburger Bibliothek, p. 64; Geiger, Nachgelassene Schriften, pp. 178-224, Berlin, 1876; Gottlober, Bikkoret le-Toledot ha-Karaim, p. 184; Gratz, Gesch.
