First edition. 8vo, 194 pages. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Hebrew poetry. Della Torre, (Hillel; 18051871) , was an Italian rabbi, a teacher, and a scholar. Born in Cuneo in Piedmont, he taught at the Collegio Colonna e Finzi in Turin from 1823 to 1829, serving as assistant rabbi from 1827. Two years later, with the opening of the Padua Rabbinical College (which trained the majority of Italian rabbis) , he was made professor of Talmud. He gained renown for his teaching of homiletics and for his own preaching. Aside from his volumes of Hebrew poetry, Tal Yaldut and Eglei Tal, and numerous sermons, he published a commentary on the Pentateuch, translated and annotated the Psalms, and rendered the prayers according to Ashkenazi custom in Italian. Short work in defense of the Cabala, by Joseph Solomon Delmedigo (15911655) , rabbi, philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer; also known as Joseph Solomon Rofe acronym YashaR) of Candia (Crete) . A writer of extensive Jewish and secular learning and of encyclopedic range, he is the author of works whose number is estimated by some authorities at 30, by others at over 60.
wrote Mazref la-Hokhmah, in which he allegedly refuted the attack on the Kabbalah made by his distant relative Elijah Delmedigo, in his Behinat ha-Dat. Since, as Delmedigo himself explains, he was commissioned to write such a refutation, it is unclear whether the work reflects his true convictions. He says in this connection: 'Do not presume that you can unravel the author's mind from his book' (ed. Odessa, 1864, p. 85) . Leone Modena understood the Mazref la-Hokhmah as a refutation of kabbalistic ideas, using it in his Ari Nohem ('Roaring Lion') , a systematic anti-kabbalistic treatise.
In 162931, his Ta'alumot Hokhmah, a collection of kabbalistic treatises, was published by his disciple, Samuel Ashkenazi, in Basle, Switzerland. The first section, Mazref la-Hokhmah, appeared in 1629, the second, Novelot Hokhmah ('Fallen Fruit of Wisdom') , in 1631. Except for these two books, the only other material that remains of Delmedigo's colossal output is the full text of his letter to Zerah of Troki, which was published together with a German translation in 1840 by Abraham Geiger in his Melo Chofnajim. - EJ 2008 Subjects: Cabala. Istanbul's Great War: Public Order, Crime and Punishment in the Ottoman Capital, 1914-1918 is a study of the social and economic life in an imperial capital at a time when the first total war of history swept through Europe, hitting the entire Ottoman Empire up to its borderlands in the arab Peninsula. The book focuses on the impact of wartime conditions on life in a city of nearly a million citizens, with a specific emphasis on public order, crime and punishment. The author, deniz dölek-Sever, takes us through a six-chapter panorama of four years of hardship in the Ottoman capital during the war, analyzing various aspects of public order, crime and punishment as experienced daily by both Muslim and non-Muslim inhabitants of Istanbul, and as perceived by the state. In doing so, her study uncovers inner workings behind state officials' policies on public order and crime. Tracing instruments of surveillance and control and various crime categories, and making extensive use of primary sources, the work provides a unique understanding of public order and crime, as well as practices of punishment in a period when the Committee of Union and Progress reigned over the political life of the Ottoman empire. Istanbul's Great War is an attempt to bring a fresh approach to the current literature on wartime Ottoman Empire.
