Born in Neisse (Upper Saxony) , Deutsch studied Jewish subjects with his uncle David Deutsch at Myslowice (Poland) and classics in Berlin. He became an assistant in the Oriental department of the British Museum in 1855. Deutsch, who possessed great ability in deciphering inscriptions, cooperated in W. S. A. Vauxs edition of Phoenician Inscriptions and in W. Smith's Dictionary of the Bible to which he contributed articles on the Targumim, the Samaritan Pentateuch, and other Bible versions. Some of his work was published posthumously in book form (Literary Remains, 1874) and edited by Lady Strangford (Berenbaum and Skolnik in EJ 2007) . Bumped corners and edges. Wear to binding. A lengthy essay on Jewish historiography, through the Bible, middle ages, and the rise of the modern study of the field in the 19th century under Zachariah Frankel and S. D. Luzatto. Gotthard Deutsch (1859-1921) rabbi and professor of Jewish history and philosophy of religion in the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati. Deutsch was well-known as a writer. He succeeded Isaac Mayer Wise as editor of the German language publication, Die Deborah in 1901. He was a contributor to the American Israelite, the American Hebrew, the Jewish Chronicle of London. He was an original member of the board of editors for the Jewish Encyclopedia, responsible for the articles dealing with modern Jewish history. His major publications were Scrolls and History of the Jews (1904) . At the time of his death, there was general regret he had been unable to publish a major book on modern Jewish history. When director of the Keren ha-Torah of Agudat Israel, he helped Sara Schnirer to develop the Beth Jacob Orthodox girls' education network, mainly in Poland, and headed its Teachers Training College for women in Cracow. - 2008 EJ. Ample footnotes and explanations provide the lay reader with sufficient background to understand the references to historical events and figures, to ideologies and to institutions. A comprehensive introduction presents the realities of Prague and Bohemia, as well as offering a helpful discussion of the chronicle and other contemporary Jewish accounts. Conservative Jewish Quarterly In about 1615 an anonymous Jew from Prague composed a short Hebrew chronicle to recount 'the expulsions, miracles, and other occurrences befalling [the Jews] in Prague and the other lands of our long exile.' Abraham David discovered the manuscript [and] added glosses, historical notes, and an introduction. . . . 8vo, br. ed. 243pp. Circa un milione e mezzo di bambini furono assassinati nella Shoah; pochissimi si salvarono sopravvivendo nascosti, in fuga, alla non vita dei ghetti est-europei e dei lager. Per lungo tempo nessuno si interessò alla loro vicenda, e i sopravvissuti si chiusero nel silenzio. La storia e la memoria dell'infanzia ebraica perseguitata dal nazifascismo ricevettero scarsa attenzione, partendo dallo stereotipo in base al quale i bambini sono troppo piccoli per avere ricordi. Ma che cosa accadde ai bambini durante la Shoah? Quali tipi di esperienze attraversarono, e come essi stessi le percepirono e le vissero? Come cercarono, pur piccoli, di testimoniare quanto stava loro accadendo, consapevoli della necessità di lasciare traccia? Quanti decisero invece di tacere per decenni per cercare di lenire il dolore, e quale sguardo proiettano oggi i testimoni, a distanza di tempo, sulle vicende persecutorie della loro infanzia? E soprattutto che cosa accadde dopo, quando per la maggior parte di loro, nati già durante la persecuzione, la fine della guerra non significò ritornare alla vita ma dover iniziare a vivere un'infanzia che era stata loro preclusa? Con la ricostruzione della storia e della prospettiva dei bambini nella Shoah, l'autrice restituisce dignità di ascolto ai bambini di allora, e al contempo mostra come non solo la percezione di quanto accadeva ma anche le modalità stesse in cui lo sterminio dei bambini fu concepito furono uniche e troppo a lungo trascurate nella storiografia della Shoah.
