Dropsie College.
A MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO DR. SOLOMON ZEITLIN, PRESENTED BY THE DROPSIE UNIVERSITY, SUNDAY, APRIL 17, 1977.
8vo. 12 pages. Illustrated. Zeitlin, (1892-1976) , was an American scholar of post-biblical literature. He was "born in Russia, studied in Dvinsk and was influenced by the Ragoshover Illui (R. Joseph Rozin) and R. Meir Simhah Ha-Kohen. In 1908 he attended the Institute of Baron David Guenzberg in St. Petersburg, where his roommate was Zalman (Rubashov) Shazar. Enrolling at the Ecole Rabbinique, Paris, in 1912, Zeitlin received ordination and a doctorate in theology there....Emigrating to the U. S. During World War I, Zeitlin received a Ph. D. At Dropsie College, Philadelphia, in 1917; his dissertation was on Megillat Ta'anit as a Source for Jewish Chronology and History in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods (1922) . Zeitlin taught first at Yeshiva College, New York, then became professor of rabbinics at Dropsie College in 1921. As an outstanding authority on the Second Commonwealth period, he wrote over 400 articles and books in the fields of rabbinics, Josephus, the Apocrypha, and Christianity. Zeitlin's assertions that the so-called Christ passage in Josephus was not authentic but only an interpolation by Eusebius, contrary to the opinion of most scholars, gained him early scholarly fame (JQR 18 (1927/28) , 231-55) . His main concern was the analysis of tannaitic sources and the recognition of a clear distinction in historic eras before and after the Temple destruction; differentiating institutions, laws, and concepts. Zeitlin was the main protagonist against dating the Dead Sea Scrolls in the intertestamental period. His understanding of the continuity of history is reflected in studies on the sources and nature of the teachings of Saadiah Gaon, Maimonides, Rashi, and other sages to ascertain the halakhic process in Judaism. He was the author of many basic writings on Josephus, on Jewish historiography and law, on the crucifixion of Jesus (Who Crucified Jesus? ..., 1964) and on halakhic traditions. He was editor of the Jewish Quarterly Review and editor in chief of the Jewish Apocryphal Literature Series. He was also instrumental in organizing the American Academy of Jewish Research in the U. S. Zeitlin's two volumes on the Rise and Fall of the Judean State (1968) present a definitive view of the Second Temple era, and include comprehensive rabbinic, non-rabbinic, and classical sources. An original and fearless scholar, he stressed that the scholar must not allow theological bias, which often influences writings on the Second Temple era and the Dead Sea Scrolls" (Sidney B. Hoenig in EJ) OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (Hebrew Union College, Upenn, Upenn Center for Judaic Studies) . Very good condition. (Katsh-2-26) xxxx

Dropsie, Moses
ON DEFORM IN JUDAISM AND ON THE STUDY OF HEBREW
1st edition. Original paper wrappers. 4to. 7 pages, 28 cm. Dropsie's harsh critique of the low state of Jewish scholarship in the US, especially as exhibited within the Reform movement. Moses Dropsie (1821-1905) was a prominent American lawyer who was active in public affairs as a member of the Philadelphia Whig party. He was heavily involved in Jewish charitable and educational work. Dropsie was also the president of the Maimonides College, the Philadelphia branch of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, and Graz College (EJ, 1906) . The estate left by his will created Dropsie College, with the goal of correcting the low level of Jewish knowledge he detailed in this booklet. This work is cited by Jonathan Sarna in his essay on Philadelphia entitled, "The Making of an American Jewish Culture" as documentation that "on at least one occation, Cyrus Adler and Solomon Schechter actively conspired to keep the Reform Movement down, rigging the board of the Schiff Library of Jewish Classics to ensure that the 'Reform element' would not have a 'preponderating vote'" (in Friedman, 1993, p. 151) . Singerman 4828. SUBJECTS: Hebrew language. Jews -- Civilization. OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide (OCLC: 11632201) . Wrappers are slightly edgeworn. First few pages are slightly torn in the upper margin. (AMR-56-9-BF)

Dropsie, Moses Aaron
THE LIFE OF JESUS: FROM AND INCLUDING THE ACCUSATION UNTIL THE ALLEGED RESURRECTION, WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE CROSS, CROWN OF THORNS, ETC.
1st edition. Plain paper wrappers, 8vo, 28 pages, 28 cm. Singerman 4065. SUBJECT (S) : Named Person: Jesus Christ -- Jewish interpretations. Jesus Christ -- Crucifixion. Dropsie (18211905) was a U. S. Attorney, businessman, philanthropist, and patron of Jewish learning. Dropsie was born in Philadelphia to a Dutch-Jewish immigrant father and a Christian mother. He embraced Judaism at the age of 14, and ultimately became a vigorous proponent of traditional Judaism in America. Dropsie made his livelihood in the jewelry business until he was 28, when he began the study of law. He was admitted to the bar in 1851. Although his practice was largely in business law, Dropsie became a scholar in legal history and published a number of works on Roman law, including one on the trial of Jesus. He became leader and officer of many Jewish communal activities, and was an admirer and disciple of Isaac Leeser. Their sense of mutual understanding was disturbed only by their divergent sympathies in the early days of the Civil War. Dropsie was an active supporter of Leeser's shortlived Maimonides College from its inception in 1867, the first Jewish theological seminary in America. Dropsie believed that one of the major reasons for its failure was the refusal of New York Jewish leaders to give it their full support; when the Jewish Theological Seminary was organized in 1886 in New York City, he refused to lend a hand. This resentment was one of the factors which motivated his establishing a bequest for a totally new institution for higher Jewish learning. Another factor was his anger, which he also expressed in a number of pamphlets, against what he considered to be the extremism of Reform Judaism (Korn in EJ 2007) . OCLC: 21438997. OCLC lists 10 copies worldwide. Repair to spine, right edge of title page mis-cut by publisher with loss of one letter (see image); internal text fine. Otherwise Very good condition.
