FIGHTING AUSCHWITZ: THE RESISTANCE MOVEMENT IN THE CONCENTRATION CAMP
Original Wrappers. 8vo. Xi, 327 pages. 22 cm. Illustrated. Later Edition. Originally published in London by Julian Friedmann Publishers, 1975. Contains portraits of Auschwitz prisoners and resistance members, as well as black and white period photographs of the camp and SS officers. An important piece by a camp survivor and Polish Home Army member discussing resistance within Aushwitz. There are already a great many books on Auschwitz; a full list of books and articles on it would run to over seven thousand items. Why add another? Because it deals systematically for the first time with an element in the life of the camp that does extraordinary credit to its prisoners: the resistance movement that was created inside it and that, even in those conditions, the SS could never destroy. The author was for a short time a forced inmate himself, which gives him a special claim to touch the subject. Before he went there, he had been in resistance outside, as an officer of the Armia Krajowa, the Polish Home Army that was later decimated in the Warsaw rising. (Foreward) Subjects: World War, 1939-1945 -- Underground movements -- Poland. Auschwitz (Concentration camp) Light shelf wear, light staining and wrinkling along bottom fore edge corner of pages. Good + condition. (HOLO-114-23)

JUDITH "MONTEFIORE" COLLEGE, RAMSGATE. REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1894-1895. TOGETHER WITH THE ANCIENT COLLECTIONS OF AGADOTH, THE SEFER HA-MAASIYOTH AND TWO FACSIMILES
Original Wraps. 8vo. XXXII, 52, 144 pages. 22 cm. First edition. With two color fascimiles. Full title: 'Judith 'Montefiore' College, Ramsgate. Report for the year 1894-1895: 1st Tammuz, 5654, to 30th Sivan, 5655; and, Report for the year 1895-1896: 1st Tammuz, 5655, to 30th Sivan, 5656. Together with the ancient collections of Agadoth, the Sefer ha-maasiyoth and two facsimiles by M. Gaster. ' Sefer ha-maasiyot is in Hebrew; the reports and the introduction to the Hebrew text are in English. The Sefer hamaasiyot or The Book of Tales, appears here for the first time; the collection of aggadot Sefer hamaasiyot (The Book of Tales, Ramsgate: 1896) , which Gaster had printed from a manuscript which he had dated variously from the ninth- to the thirteenth-centuries, was later republished as Sefer hamaasiyot: The Exempla of the Rabbis (London: 1924) . The Judith Montefiore College was a theological seminary founded in 1869 by Sir Moses Montefiore in honor of his wife, Lady Judith Montefiore, at Ramsgate. Kent, England, near his residence, East Cliff Lodge. It mainly took the form of a bet ha-midrash attended by elderly men of learning who studied the Talmud there. The first principal was Dr. L. Löwe; after his death, in 1888, it languished for a time, till an attempt was made to convert it into a modern theological seminary under the principalship of Dr. M. Gaster, who largely increased the library by judicious purchases. The experiment lasted from 1891 to 1896; but it proved unsuccessful. The college was then restored to its original object; and the buildings are now occupied by six collegians who study the Law and Talmud and deliver public lectures once a month. Part of the library has been transferred to Jews' College, London. (1906 JE) . Moses Gaster was also principal of Judith Montefiore College, Ramsgate, from 1891 to 1896, and wrote valuable essays accompanying the yearly reports of that institution. (1906 Je) Subjects: Jewish legends. Aggada. Judith "Montefiore" College. Report for the year 1895-1896. OCLC lists 6 copies. Previously rebacked with masking tape, binding shaken, light wear to edges, otherwise fresh and clean. Good condition. (SPEC-39-27)
