‎HENRY WARD BEECHER AND THE JEWS: IN COMMEMORATION OF THE CENTENARY OF HIS BIRTH (JUNE 24TH, 1913) .‎

‎1st separate edition, 16mo (small) 39 pages. Includes portrait ; 15 cm. 1 of 100 copies printed. "Reprinted in 100 copies from the anniversary number of the Jewish tribune, Portland, Oregon, December 19, 1913" [from the Title page verso]. Henry Ward Beecher ( 1813 – 1887) was an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875 adultery trial…. Several of his brothers and sisters became well-known educators and activists, most notably Harriet Beecher Stowe, who achieved worldwide fame with her abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin…..Over the course of his ministry, he...grew interested in social reform, particularly the abolitionist movement. In the years leading up to the Civil War, he raised money to purchase slaves from captivity and to send rifles—nicknamed ‘Beecher's Bibles’—to abolitionists fighting in Kansas and Nebraska…. After the war, Beecher supported social reform causes such as women's suffrage and temperance. He also championed Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, stating that it was not incompatible with Christian beliefs…. Beecher's long career in the public spotlight led biographer Debby Applegate to call her biography of him The Most Famous Man in America” (Wikipedia, 2019) . OCLC: 17882630. OCLC lists 14 copies worldwide. Light wear, about Very Good- Condition. (KH-8-54)‎

‎JEWISH LIFE IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN COUNTRY COMMUNITIES‎

‎Softcover, illustrated, maps, portraits, 4to, 23 x 24 cm. 215, 528, 500 pages. Contents: Volume 1: The northern Great Escarpment, the Lowveld, the northern Highveld, the Bushveld -- Volume 2: Boland, Bushmanland, Central Karoo, Fairest Cape, Griqualand West, Kalahari, Koup, Namaqualand, Swartland, West Coast. Volume 3: Camdeboo, Cape Midlands, Garden Route, Griqualand East and Transkei, Langkloof, Little Karoo, North Eastern Cape, Overberg, Settler Country. SUBJECT(S): Jews -- South Africa -- History. Jews -- South Africa -- Social life and customs. Country life -- South Africa -- History. City and town life -- South Africa -- History. Geographic: South Africa -- History, Local. Note(s): Includes bibliographical references and index. The first two volumes, part of the unique on-going research project of South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth (or the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora), have enjoyed great success among readers, both in South Africa and abroad. Volume One focused on the northern and eastern Transvaal areas (mainly comprising today's Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces). Volume Two focused on the Western Cape. The final instalments will cover the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, and the southern Gauteng area, including the various towns on the East and West Rand. The third volume of Jewish Life in the South African Country Communities, chronicling the history of the once strong and now largely vanished Jewish presence in the smaller towns and rural districts of South Africa, has now been published. The book starts with the earliest settlement of Jews in South Africa, before and including the 1820 Settlers. The areas covered in the new volume include the Garden Route, Little Karoo, the Cape-Midlands, Overberg and Settler country. The publication is sought after Africana and is of interest to all those, Jews and others, who lived in the country towns and shared their lives, as well as those who holidayed in the area. It will also appeal to historians, genealogists, and librarians. The research covers almost 1500 small towns and villages in South Africa where Jews lived. No village, hamlet or railway siding has been too small; so long as there has been a Jewish presence there, every location has found its way into the record. In addition to recording the story of the various Jewish communities, it also recounts the history of the places in which they lived. The book also includes many colorful anecdotes of life in the country towns and villages, as well as numerous hitherto unpublished photographs. New Condition. Printed on heavy glossy paper. (k-mx-1-18) Three large volumes, over 1200 pages total.‎

‎Moses Hess and Modern Jewish Identity‎

‎Original Publisher’s Cloth. 8vo. X, 180 pages. 25 cm. “Hess, a German socialist and father of Zionist Socialism, professed that Jews must preserve their nationality in the exile and strive for its political restoration in Palestine. He felt that the Jewish religion is the best means of preserving the nationality of the Jews and must therefore be left unchanged until the day when the foundations of a Jewish political and social establishment are laid in Palestine and a Sanhedrin can be elected to modify Jewish law in agreement with the needs of the new society. According to Hess, the Jewish people needed a "center of action, " around which a nucleus of men devoted to the religious mission of Israel could gather to pursue their work. ” –EJ, 2007. Nice, clean copy in Very Good Condition. (GER-32-8)‎

‎THE JEWISH OPINION: LONDON, FEBRUARY 1945. CONFERENCE OF EUROPEAN JEWRY‎

‎1ST Separate Edition. Original paper outside pages, no cover, as issued. 8vo booklet, 11+[1] pages. Reprinted from the Soviet Information Bulletin in Washington. Includes article “Jew Baiting Must Be Wiped Out: No Mercy for Murderers, ” by Komarov, who was the most respected name in systematic botany in the USSR, ex-president of the Academy of Sciences, a deputy of the Supreme Soviet, and holder of the highest Soviet civil award-a “Hero of Socialist Labour. ” Also contains smaller sections “Conference of European Jewry, ” “Fight for Humanity, ” “Meeting of Jewish Communists, ” “French Jews Reorganise, ” and “Commentary. ” The general theme is uniting forces and countries to fight against antisemitism. From Komarov’s article, “To keep silence about this is to deliver our children to death. In this matter, if any country gives shelter to the Hitlerites or their ideas, in the shape of discriminatory legislation in the shape of racial organisation or racial Press, it is no longer an internal affair of that country. If your neighbour uncloses in his backyard a container with poison gases which threaten to spread over the entire town, you will not waste time by asking for permission to enter his backyard, you will do so to avert death for thousands of people. Racial ideas are more dangerous than any poison gas. It is our generation’s duty to the future, to the cause of the progress of civilisation and humanity, not only to put out the smoking fire of Fascism but to uncover and extinguish every smouldering coal of it. ” (page [12]) Very rare, not listed on OCLC nor could we locate copies anywhere else.
