Nirenberg David
Anti-Judaism: The Western Tradition
8vo, Hardcover in dj, pp.624. . 16.46 x 24.18 cm. escribes how Judaism has been viewed as a dangerous force to be opposed, criticized, attacked and eliminated for centuries, from the Romans' destruction of the Second Temple, through the Inquisition and up to the Holocaust. Questions of how we are Jewish and, more critically, how and why we are not have been churning within the Western imagination throughout its history. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans; Christians and Muslims of every period; even the secularists of modernity have used Judaism in constructing their visions of the world. The thrust of this tradition construes Judaism as an opposition, a danger often from within, to be criticized, attacked, and eliminated.

Communities of Violence: Persecution of Minorities in the Middle Ages: Persecution of Minorities in the Middle Ages
8vo, br. ed. pp.301. In the wake of modern genocide, we tend to think of violence against minorities as a sign of intolerance, or, even worse, a prelude to extermination. Violence in the Middle Ages, however, functioned differently, according to David Nirenberg. In this provocative book, he focuses on specific attacks against minorities in fourteenth-century France and the Crown of Aragon (Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia). He argues that these attacks--ranging from massacres to verbal assaults against Jews, Muslims, lepers, and prostitutes--were often perpetrated not by irrational masses laboring under inherited ideologies and prejudices, but by groups that manipulated and reshaped the available discourses on minorities. Nirenberg shows that their use of violence expressed complex beliefs about topics as diverse as divine history, kinship, sex, money, and disease, and that their actions were frequently contested by competing groups within their own society. Nirenberg's readings of archival and literary sources demonstrates how violence set the terms and limits of coexistence for medieval minorities. The particular and contingent nature of this coexistence is underscored by the book's juxtapositions--some systematic (for example, that of the Crown of Aragon with France, Jew with Muslim, medieval with modern), and some suggestive (such as African ritual rebellion with Catalan riots). Throughout, the book questions the applicability of dichotomies like tolerance versus intolerance to the Middle Ages, and suggests the limitations of those analyses that look for the origins of modern European persecutory violence in the medieval past.

Agada de Pesah.= Hagadah shel Pesah.
Very Good Ladino Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ladino (both Hebrew and Latin scripts). [44] p. Heavily stains on some pages. Agada de Pesah.= Hagadah shel Pesah. Pesah [i.e. Passover; Turkish: Hamursuz Bayrami] is a major Jewish holiday and one of the most widely celebrated Jewish holidays. Together with Shavuot and Sukkot, Passover was one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals (Shalosh Regalim) during which the entire population of the kingdom of Judah made a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. Nissenson, Hugh, Daniel Walden, Jonathan Rosen.
CHAIM POTOK AND JEWISH-AMERICAN CULTURE: THREE ESSAYS: A MEMORIAL SYMPOSIUM
Original Wraps. 8vo. 22 pages. 23 cm. First edition. On December 8, 2002, the Jewish Studies Program and the School of Arts and Sciences jointly co-sponsored a memorial symposium entitled Chaim Potok and American-Jewish Culture. We invited three notable authors to speak Hugh Nissenson, Daniel Walden, and Jonathan Rose each of whom, we hoped would offer a different perspective upon Potoks work. The novelist Hugh Nissenson, who was Potoks contemporary, wrote the front-page New York Times Book Review essay that had catapulted The Chosen into best-sellerdom. Professor Daniel Walden, one of the deans of American-Jewish literary studies, had written extensively about Potok from an academic perspective. Finally, the novelist and essayist Jonathan Rosen seemed to us the perfect writer to discuss Potok; s influence and image among younger Jewish writers in America. (Introduction) Contents: Choosing the chosen: a reappraisal of Chaim Potok's the Chosen by Hugh Nissenson. Chaim Potok: a zwischenmensch ("between person") in the cultures by Daniel Walden. Chaim Potok and the question of Jewish writing by Jonathan Rosen. Subjects: Jews in literature. Potok, Chaim -- Criticism and interpretation. OCLC lists 25. Some shelfwear, address sticker on back. Very Good condition. (AMR-43-48)

Nissim Ben Jacob Ben Nissim Ibn Shahin; Julian Obermann
THE ARABIC ORIGINAL OF IBN SHAHIN'S BOOK OF COMFORT, KNOWN AS THE HIBBUR YAPHE OF R. NISSIM B. YA? AQOBH
Original Cloth. 4to. LIX, CLIV, 183 pages. 29 cm. First edition. In English and Judeo-Arabic. The manuscript of the Book of comfort. Edited from the unique manuscript by Julian Obermann. Facsimile edition of a Judeo-Arabic ms. With transcription into Arabic; introduction and notes in English. Yale oriental series. Researches, XVII. Nissim ben Jacob ben Nissim ibn Shahin (c. 9901062) , together with Hananel b. Hushi'el , the outstanding leader and talmudist of North Africa.
Hibbur me-haYeshu'ah (Ferrara, 1557) , Nissim's best-known work, is a collection of Hebrew stories and folktales taken from early sources. It is designed to strengthen belief, faith, and morality among the people and to raise their spirit. This work, possibly the first prose storybook in medieval Hebrew literature, paved the way for Hebrew belletristic literature as a literary genre. Tradition has it that Nissim dedicated the book to his father-in-law, Dunash, who is otherwise unknown, to console him in his mourning. The first printed edition was published from an early Hebrew translation, and the Arabic text was published by J. Obermann. The Hebrew version has been frequently republished, not always according to the same translation. A new Hebrew translation, together with critical annotations by H. Z. Hirschberg, was published in 1954. Additional Arabic texts have been published by S. Abramson. The work circulated widely even before its first printing, and had a great influence on similar story collections. Ma'asiyyot she-ba-Talmud (Constantinople, 1519) was based upon it, and the Hibbur ha-Ma'asiyyot (ibid. , 1519) is an anthology of its stories. Many of the stories included by Gaster in his The Exempla of the Rabbis (1924; 19682) were taken from it. - 2008 EJ. Subjects: Talmud - Legends. Jewish legends. Aggada - Translations into English. Folk literature, Judeo-Arabic - Translations into English. Endpages and cloth soiled, otherwise clean and fresh. Good + condition. (RAB-58-39) xx

SEFER SHEELOT U-TESHUVOT HA-RAN: ASHER HESHIV LE-SHOALAV DAVAR
(FT) Hardcover, 8vo, 68 [i. E. 136] pages, 25 cm. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Responsa -- 1040-1600. Nissim (? 1310? 1375) , was one of the most important Spanish talmudists. Nissim's family originated in Cordova and settled first in Gerona, where he is thought to have been born, and then in Barcelona, which became his permanent place of residence. Few biographical details are known of him. He never held any official rabbinical post, even though in fact he fulfilled all the functions of a rabbi and dayyan in his community. Furthermore, many takkanot enacted in Spain originated with him, and his reputation as an authoritative posek was such that he received queries from as far as Erez Israel and Syria. He is also known to have served as a physician in the royal palace. Because of a calumny, the date and causes of which are not certain, he was imprisoned for some time. It is also known that in 1336 he wrote a Sefer Torah for his own use, which became well known and served as a model. This Sefer Torah was moved from place to place until it reached Tiberias, where it was preserved until recently. Nissim's renown rests chiefly on his halakhic works (Feldman in EJ 2007) . OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide. Repair to binding. Wear to spine and binding. Bumped corners and edges. Good condition. (Spec-8-5)

Nissim Gabriele
