‎Schabrod, Karl‎

‎WIDERSTAND AN RHEIN UND RUHR, 1933-1945‎

‎Original Stiff Wrappers. 8vo. 184, [16] pages. 21 cm. First edition. In German. Title translates as: “Resistance in the Rhine and Ruhr, 1933-1945.” Published by the Association of Victims of the Nazi regime of North Rhine-Westphalia, a post war association of German anti-fascist resistance members and concentration camp survivors, founded as a means of support for 250, 000 formerly persecuted political prisoners. The author, Karl Schabrod (1900-1981) was a pre-war radical woodworkers and journalist for a communist paper, he was arrested in 1934 for anti-fascist leaflets in Dusseldorf and imprisoned in the Börgermoor concentration camp. He was released, and arrested again for anti-fascist activities, and was sentenced to life imprisonment; he was liberated by Americans in 1945. He resumed his activities, helping rebuild the short lived activity of the post war German Communist Party in the Federal Republic, and was actively involved in the support network of the Association of Victims of the Nazi Regime. He was blacklisted by the Federal Republic in 1950, and worked as a carpenter, and remained politically active for the remainder of his life, spending another stint of nine months in jail in 1958 for being a communist actively seeking to become elected in the local parliament of North Rhine-Wesphalia. Schabrod wrote at least five volumes dealing with the resistance struggles and political prisoners in the anti-nazi struggle. In this volume, a general survey of the resistance in the Rhine and Ruhr region, encompasses not only the radical miners and proletarians who maintained literary and active struggle against the nazis throughout these years, but also details the open resistance in the region at the closing of the war, wherein many anti-nazi fighters waged open battle as the Ruhr pocket was being closed; many of these fighters being liquidated by the SS. Includes dozens of hand-drawn illustrations of underground newspapers and leaflets, assuredly lost and redrawn from memory by the author. Includes a large register of anti-nazi comrades killed in the struggle. Subjects: Anti-Nazi movement - Germany - North Rhine-Westphalia. Nationalsozialismus. Widerstand. Geschichte 1933-1945. North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) - History. Rheinprovinz. Ruhrgebiet. Light wear to covers, fresh and clean. Good + condition. (HOLO2-100-29)‎

‎LITURGYAH SHEL LEL SHABAT = SABBATH EVE LITURGY: FOR CANTOR (BARITONE OR TENOR) , MIXED VOICES (SATB) AND ORGAN‎

‎Original Wraps. 4to. 91 pages. 27 cm. First edition. Musical scores throughout. “Heinrich Schalit is one of the principal names associated with serious mid-20th-century American synagogue music for Reform worship—although some of his settings had currency at one time in liberal Conservative synagogues as well. … Schalit was born in Vienna, where he studied composition with Robert Fuchs (1847–1927) and with Joseph Labor (1842–1924) , who was also one of Arnold Schoenberg’s teachers. In 1927 Schalit was appointed to the position of organist at the principal Liberale synagogue in Munich, whose learned cantor and productive resident composer, Emanuel Kirschner (1857–1938) —a former singer in the choir of Louis Lewandowski in Berlin and a follower in his path, albeit in a more artistically sophisticated vein—appears to have exerted a lasting influence on him. His first synagogue composition was a setting of v’shamru for the Sabbath eve liturgy, which he then incorporated into his first full Sabbath eve service, Eine Freitagabend Liturgie. That service, published in Germany in 1933 and later revised for American publication in 1951, remains one of his seminal achievements, notwithstanding his substantial subsequent oeuvre. By that time he had grown dissatisfied with what he called an 'unorganic mixture of traditional cantorial chants with congregational and choral music in the German style of the 19th century, ' and he felt that the synagogue of the 20th century required its elimination. Liturgical composition became for him a sacred calling, with a sense of mission that he posed as a challenge to contemporary Jewish musicians to 'prepare a change in style and outlook, ' as he wrote in the preface to his first service. His goal was to 'create a new, unified liturgical music growing out of the soil of the old-new, significant and valuable source material' that had become available through recent musicological studies. ” (Milken Archive) Subjects: Synagogue music - Sabbath services. Choruses, Sacred (Mixed voices, 4 parts) with organ. OCLC lists 22 copies. Institutional stamps on endpages and on wraps edges. Light wear to wraps, otherwise fresh and clean. Very good condition. ‎HAMISHAH ASAR B'SHEVAT PROGRAM MANUAL‎

‎Original Wraps. 4to. 20 pages. 28 cm. Revised edition. First published January 1948. “Revised January 1949.” Important early statehood document as the holiday was gaining a new meanting in the new Jewish state. Typewritten duplicated printing; wraps typeset, dated January 1948 (wraps re-used from original printing) . Prepared by Norman Schanin, for National Young Judaea, under the auspices of the American Zionist Youth Commission. Program manual for the celebration of Hamishah Asar B'Shevat; with a history of the origin and meaning of the holiday, its significance for American Jews, observing the holiday in a group, the trees of Israel, and games, crafts and projects for the classroom. Contains a one page bibliography at rear. "[I]n 1948 the Zionist dream of an independent State of Israel miraculously came to pass, and one of the first things the settlers did when they came back to their land was to plant trees and develop moshavim (collective farms) . Reforesting the land by planting trees during Tu B'Shevat eventually became national custom. Today Israeli schoolchildren plant trees in special ceremonies (neti'at etzim) . And people living the Disapora often donate money to plant trees in Israel through the services of the Jewish National Fund. Tu B'Shevat therefore resembles an 'Israeli Arbor Day' when trees are planted and the rebirth of the Jewish homeland is celebrated" (John Parsons, 2015) . Subjects: Tu bi-Shevat - Study and teaching. Jews - Education - United States. Jews - Education. Tu bi-Shevat - Study and teaching. United States. OCLC lists one copy of this edition (Harvard) , 3 of the 1948 edition, no others. ‎THE HOLOCAUST : WHY GOD STOOD ASIDE AND LET IT HAPPEN‎

‎Softcover, 8vo, 23 cm. , 201 pages. 2nd edition. Alas, the reviewer on Amazon writes that this is “a Christian book in that its thesis is that God was punishing the Jews for not accepting Jesus as the Messiah.  Aside from that, it is horribly written and is full of misspellings, chiefly Elie ‘Weisel. ’ I don't know why Mr. Schapiro chose me to review his book, but from where I sit, it is not worth the paper it is printed on. ” Corners bumped, otherwise good condition.
