‎Erste deutsche Ausgabe der in den 50er Jahren sehr populären "Reveries of a Bachelor", denen bescheinigt wurde, sie seien "one of the choicest specimens of half romance and half essay that was appeared in our times" (nach Allibone). Douglas Grant Mitchell, der seine Schriften unter dem Pseudonym Ik Marvel herausgab, war Amerikaner, der 1845 und noch einmal 1848 Europa bereist hatte und für kurze Zeit als amerikanischer Konsul in Venedig residierte. "Der Ton in Mr. Mitchell's Schriften ist idealisch schön, wie in keinem anderen Werke bekannter Amerikanischer Schriftsteller. Er ist niemals oberflächlich und besitzt einen reichen Schatz von dem, was wir Deutschen "Gemüth" nennen... (Die "Träumereien" enthalten) eine Sammlung jener flüchtigen Seelenbilder, die sich in (des Autors) Hirn herumgetrieben haben". Im übrigen ist der Autor geneigt, allein den Junggesellen für den "einzigen sichern, unpartheiischen Beobachter der verschiedenen Zustände des ehelichen Lebens zu halten", worum es in diesem "Buch des Herzens" zweifelsohne auch geht.- Nicht bei Sabin.‎
