The Prisoner Of Sex.
No publisher or place of publication Taiwan 1971. Advertisement leaf precedes half-title; three blanks at end; coarse violet cloth lettered gilt down spine. Paste-downs slightly bubbled due to an original binding fault; otherwise a near-fine copy. The verso of the title-page bears the words ‘Copyright 1971 by Norman Mailer. First edition’ and a block of Chinese characters. Presumably a piracy from the first American edition. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover

Existential Errands
Boston: Little Brown 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Surface marks to jacket and a slight paper adhesion on the rear panel short tears to jacket at spine ends still attractive and very good. Faint wear and discoloration to book edges. Inscribed by Mailer "To Buzz and Carol These were the years hey gang Love Norman May '72". Buzz and Carol Farbar were longtime friends of Mailer's from the publishing business - Buzz was involved in Mailer's three movies Maidstone Wild 90 and Beyond the Law playing Buzz Cameo in the improvised gangster film "Wild 90" which is the subject of the essay "Some Dirt in the Talk" in this collection. Years later Buzz was arrested in a sting operation trying to buy a kilo of cocaine actually a harmless white powder being shopped by an undercover agent. In return for a promise of a radically reduced sentence Buzz was convinced to wear a wire to a lunch at Armando's in Brooklyn with Mailer where he would get Norman to admit that he was the money guy in an international hashish ring run by Mailer's onetime associate Richard Stratton. It didn't work out and Buzz was given a harsh 6 year sentence. His wife Carol divorced him in 1985 and he ended up tragically committing suicide after being released from prison. Needless to say rumors about Mailer's involvement in the drug smuggling and in Buzz's silence on the matter have made the rounds over the years. A terrific association with a close associate and one of the more puzzling episodes in one of the great literary lives of the 20th century. Size: Octavo 8vo. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Essays & Literary Criticism; Signed by Author. Inventory No: 043587.

Little Brown hardcover books

HUCKLEBERRY FINN ALIVE AT 100
Montclair: Caliban Press 1985. First Edition First Issue and one of only 50 copies bound in boards by Pam & Don Rash. 8vo publisher's original red paper over buckram backed boards the upper cover lettered in black. 2 10 1 colophon pp. A very fine copy as pristine and mint. FIRST EDITION OF THIS NORMAN MAILER RARITY. "Let me offer assurances. It may have been worth the wait. I suppose I am the ten-millionth reader to say that HUCKLEBERRY FINN is an extraordinary work. Indeed for all I know it is a great novel. Flawed quirky uneven not above taking cheap shots and cashing far to many checks it is rarely above milking its humor---all the same what a book we have here !.One always does surrender sooner or later to a book with a strong magnetic field. I felt as if I held the work of a young writer.a prodigiously talented fellow.who had the audacity to write a historical novel about the Mississippi as it might have been a century and a half ago and this young writer had managed to give us a circus of fictional virtuosities. In nearly every chapter new and remarkable characters bounded out from the printed page.the ongoing treasure of HUCKLEBERRY FINN is that it frees us to think of democracy and its sublime terrifying premise: let the passions and cupidities and dreams and kinks and ideals and greed and hopes and foul corruptions of all men and women have their day and the world will still be better off for there is more good than bad in the sum of us and our workings. Mark Twain whole embodiment of that democratic human understood the premise in every turn of his pen and how he tested it how he twisted an tantalized and tested it until we are weak all over again with our love for the idea." Norman Mailer on reading HUCKLEBERRY FINN for the second time. Caliban Press hardcover
