A very good example of this rare issue. One of very few copies bound thus and unknown to Kirkpatrick. Colophon shows the number 4 in red ink but is unsigned. Speculation suggests that perhaps the first 5 copies were thus bound out of the edition limited to 800 copies of a total run of 861 printed on pure rag paper. Dark green morocco elegantly decorated & ruled the spine panel faded to brown. Endpapers are marbled and there is a handsome name plate on the front pastedown. A rare issue of this cornerstone Woolf title in the publishers original slipcase. Not mentioned in Kirkpatrick A11 . Crosby Gaige unknown

When Virginia Woolf published Orlando in 1928 the world of life-writing had already received its first defining moment through the major work of her father Lesley Stephens with the Dictionary of National Biography. Virginia felt women however had been excluded from history books and biography – Orlando was her revolution for both. Before Orlando Virginia had already published five novels with moderate success. Inspired by her love affair with another female writer Vita Sackville-West she decided to write a biography of an individual who lives several lives as both sexes. Virginia moulded Orlando out of Vita an aristocrat and a socialite the wife of a diplomat and product of a long line of noble ancestors.
