Alles deutet auf eine bevorstehende Katastrophe als die Katastrophe bereits geschehen war - die Niederlage Frankreichs die "Schlacht von Großbritannien" mit Blitzkrieg und drohender Invasion. Unter diesen neuen Vorstellungen können Sie sehen wie es in England aussieht und wie es in England aussieht. Unter Wolle der alten Welt lässt Virginia Wolle zwischen den Akten Revue passieren war für Englandkrieg seine Geschichte und Literatur Landleben und Mentalität - dramatisch gestaltet in einem großen historischen Bilderbogen episodisch erzählt an einem kurzen Sommertag und voll von lyrischen "Einlagen" häufige Zitaten aber auch nicht sondern von einzelnen Charakteren "in Imitation" großer englischer Poesie produziert nach- und anempfunden. Das "vollständige Ganze" das Virginia Woolf vorschwebte ist ein Art Gesamtkunstwerk aber es hat auch wie es einer seiner Romane einer Leichtigkeit und Beiläufigkeit auch den Anschein von Skizzenhaftigkeit die vielleicht das Raffinement der Konstruktion übersehen lässt. <br />Am 20. März 1941 schickte sie das Typoskript an John Lehmann Leiter der Hogarth-Presse mit dem Lesen und mit seinem Urteil mitzuteilen - sie selbst halte den "zusätzlichen Roman" für "viel zu leichtgewichtig und skizzenhaft" Leonard sei anderer Meinung. Lehmann war begeistert. Etwa am 27. März schrieb ihm Virginia Woolf noch einmal - der Roman sei zu träumen und trivial sie wolle ihn gründlich revidieren jedenfalls in dieser Form nicht publizieren. Als Lehmann diesen Brief erhielt am 28.
