Woolf, Virginia - edited by Stephen Barkway and Stuart N Clarke
The Uncollected Letters of Virginia Woolf
Edinburgh University Press. Hardback. 1034pp. "Many previously undiscovered letters from Virginia Woolf have come to light since the original six-volume Collected Letters was published between 1975 and 1980. Over 1400 are included in this vital new book illuminating facets of Woolf's life that have previously been hidden or only glimpsed. Important letters to contemporary writers such as Stella Benson Rebecca West Lyn Lloyd Irvine and Berta Ruck have been unearthed from archives as well as fifty letters to T. S. Eliot. This book also features substantial collections of letters to Lady Colefax Winifred Holtby Mary Hutchinson Christabel McLaren Lady Aberconway and Raymond Mortimer as well as previously unrecorded correspondents". No dust jacket as published. Although from a different publisher this volume has been designed so that the spine reflects both the colours and the design of the six volume collected letters. Slightly softened with a little wrinkle and one tiny mark to the head of the spine else very clean bright and copy that appears unread. Very good copy . Hardback. First Edition. 2025. WOOLF, Virginia
THE VOYAGE OUT
New York: George H. Doran Company 1920. First American edition. Very good. Octavo. Moss green cloth boards lettered in black on spine and in blind on the upper cover within an ornamental border all edges trimmed. 380 pp. Published 20 May 1920 no record of the number of copies or impressions printed. The text was revised by Woolf for this the first American edition. A few scattered spots to the upper board some stray pale inkblots on first free end sheet whose corner was previously turned down tiny dot of lavender ink near fore-tip of page 9 else a very good square copy of Woolf's first novel without the dust jacket.

First American edition. First appearance of Clarissa Dalloway Mrs. Dalloway. The first UK edition was published by Duckworth & Co. the publishing house headed by her half brother Gerald Duckworth in 1915. Duckworth did very little to support this book or their later publication in 1919 of Night and Day which prompted her and Leonard to purchase the rights to the two books.

"George H. Dorn Company of New York published the American editions of both titles in 1920. Apparently Woolf had offers from two American publishers Doran and Macmillan according to her 26 November 1919 letter to Lytton Strachey. She revised the text of her novels for an American audience: 'I have to send the books off on Monday & they say the more alterations the better-because of copyright. I've glanced between the boards and see that the whole thing must be rewritten from the beginning - and only 2 days to do it in!' According to the International Copyright Act passed by Congress in 1891 American issues of British books had to be typeset and printed in the United States; American publishers could not print from British plates. Consequently there are variations between the British and American editions of Virginia Woolf's publications" Cooper 2014. KIRKPATRICK & CLARKE A1b. George H. Doran Company unknown

Woolf, Virginia
The Voyage Out.
London: Duckworth 1927. Early printing of Woolf's first novel. Octavo original cloth. Very good in the rare original dust jacket which has been restored. Uncommon in the original jacket. Woolf began work on The Voyage Out by 1910 and had finished an early draft by 1912. The novel had a long and difficult gestation; it was not published until 1915 as it was written during a period in which Woolf was especially psychologically vulnerable. She suffered from periods of depression and at one point attempted suicide. The resultant work contained the seeds of all that would blossom in her later work: the innovative narrative style the focus on feminine consciousness sexuality and death. Writing in 1926 E. M. Forster described it as ". a strange tragic inspired book whose scene is a South America not found on any map and reached by a boat which would not float on any sea an America whose spiritual boundaries touch Xanadu and Atlantis". Reviewing the book a decade earlier he wrote this: "It is absolutely unafraid. Here at last is a book which attains unity as surely as Wuthering Heights though by a different path.
