Elle est l'un des principaux auteurs modernistes du XXe siècle. Dans l'entre-deux-guerres, elle est une figure marquante de la société littéraire londonienne et un membre central du Bloomsbury Group, qui réunit des écrivains, artistes et philosophes anglais. Les romans Mrs Dalloway (1925), La Promenade au phare (1927), Orlando (1928) et Les Vagues (1937), ainsi que l'essai féministe Une chambre à soi (1929), demeurent parmi ses écrits les plus célèbres. - Une chambre à soi (titre original : A Room of One's Own) est un essai pamphlétaire de Virginia Woolf, publié pour la première fois en 1929. Il se base sur plusieurs conférences données par Woolf en octobre 1928 dans deux collèges de l'université Cambridge qui étaient alors réservés aux femmes, Newnham College et Girton College. Le sujet principal de ce texte est la place des auteurs de sexe féminin dans l'histoire de la littérature, principalement dans le contexte britannique. Woolf se penche sur les facteurs qui ont entravé l'accession des femmes à l'éducation, à la production littéraire et au succès. L'une de ses thèses principales, qui a donné son titre à l'ouvrage, est qu'une femme doit au moins disposer « de quelque argent et d'une chambre à soi » si elle veut produire une uvre romanesque. Ce texte est considéré comme tenant une place importante dans l'histoire du féminisme.
