The Lucky Lawrences
New York NY: Triangle Books. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1943. First Publishers Edition. Hard Cover Cloth. Has a girl with family responsibilities the right to love to a man of her own children of her own Gail Lawrence last of the Lucky Lawrences was left at twenty-three with four young brothers and sisters and a pitifully small income. Somehow she held the little group together in a huge old house. The children helped or were too young to realize their problems except for Ariel. At seventeen she rebelled against poverty. She was beautiful and didn't want to get "caught in a trap" like Gail. Men pursued Ariel and the neighbors talked about that "fast and loose" Lawrence girl. Gail's triumphs and disappointments her courage and her final triumph make as beautiful and genuine a story as Ms. Norris has ever written with a surprise climax as amusing as it is entirely unexpected. Bound in deep blue cloth; one corner is moderately worn and the bottom spine end is turned up. Black lettering with decoration on the spine and an outline of their house on the front. Pages stained red on all edges. The jacket has several small tears or bends repaired. In a protective cover. These I Like Best
New York: The Book League of America 1941. The favorite novels and stories of Kathleen Norris chosen by herself and published in one volume. Of all the novels and short stories by this prolific and well-loved writer these are the works she herself considered her finest: "Barberry Bush" features one of Kathleen Norris's most courageous heroines Barbara Atherton deserted by her husband a talented but reckless artist. Ultimately Barbara must choose between a new chance for happiness or sink once more into the abyss of a beautiful but completely hopeless passion. Miss Norris was noted for empowering her heroines in an age where women were still very much second-class citizens. Like many of Miss Norris' books this one was inspirational for women breaking the bonds of a repressive past. "Little Ships" was Miss Norris's personal favorite of all her novels "autobiographical only to the extent that it deals with the sort of men and women and children I used to know; the atmosphere and background that were mine. The scene therefore had to be that of old San Francisco: the people Irish-Americans living the simple emotional united life of a big family." "Mother" was Kathleen Norris's first novel in 1911 about a patient and self-sacrificing mother and Miss Norris felt that "no collection would be complete without it." Finally the book includes five of her favorite short stories: "Rising Water" "The Kelly Kid" "Grand Central Pickup" "Sinners" "Masterpiece" and a favorite essay "Beauty in Letters." This 63-year-old book is in very good condition and comes with its original dust jacket. The book sports a handsome and decorative red cloth cover. There are no signatures or inscriptions from former owners. The binding is tight and secure and the pages are clean and sparkling throughout. The book has top-edge red and it looks as if someone splashed a drop of water on it a minor flaw. The dust jacket has some small tears and a chip missing from the bottom of the rear panel. The book measures 5 by 8 inches and includes 732 pages. See photo. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Chap Book. The Book League of America Hardcover

THE LEAST AND VILEST THINGS
London: Victor Gollancz. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Scarce Title. Author's first book. Ex-libary has no stickers/markings to jacket few inside stamps and stamp to top ege. HC & DJ have fairly minor wear to edges light soiling to DJ protective plastic cover attached to book. Interior pages clean & tight other than library markings. Jacket not clipped. "I have decided I may become an emergent woman" announces Hannah Green after twelve earthbound years of marriage. The story of Hannah's attempts to do just this makes compulsive reading. She struggles against obstacles which are by no means uncommon; but their very ordinariness creates a relevant and refreshingly realistic setting to Elizabeth North's outstanding first novel.
