br. Se un giorno la filologia morisse, la critica morirebbe con lei, la barbarie rinascerebbe, la credulità sarebbe di nuovo padrona del mondo». Così Ernest Renan ne "L'avenir de la science" (1890) tesseva un altissimo elogio della filologia, una delle scienze regine del XIX secolo. Oggi, al tempo delle fake news e della post-verità, quelle parole ci ricordano che la filologia può essere ancora argine alla barbarie. E ci ricordano che la filologia, quella con aggettivi e quella senza, è intrinsecamente politica. Non è utile o interessante in sé: lo è quando è schierata, militante, "calda", quando tocca interessi, quando serve interessi. Quando è "al servizio" di un Principe o di un partito o di uno Stato o di una visione del mondo. Ci ricordano insomma che la filologia è anche politica, come sapevano Lorenzo Valla e Baruch Spinoza, Ernest Renan e Ulrich Wilamowitz-Möllendorff, Gaston Paris e Paul Meyer, Eduard Koschwitz e Joseph Bédier, Ernst Robert Curtius e Erich Auerbach, Cesare Segre e Edward Said. Eppure la filologia, con o senza aggettivi, oggi sa di polvere e di noia. Ciò sollecita varie domande: perché questa antica "scienza del testo" si è ridotta al margine della cultura di oggi? Può tornare al centro dei bisogni intellettuali dell'uomo contemporaneo? Quale tipo di filologia può ancora servire il mondo e servire al mondo?
