1901. ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS. SANDY HOOK: AMERICA CUP. An 11-inch by 16-inch print from "The Illustrated London News" October 5 1901 depicting two panels one of which is of Jersey Shore interest. The lower panel is titled: Bird's Eye View Of The Course For The America Cup: "Shamrock II." Accompanied by the "Erin" on one of her trial spins nearing the Sandy Hook Lightship the starting and finishing point of the cup races." Drawn by Joseph Becker New York. London 1865 I.L.N. Single sheet 2 woodcut engravings very good clear image no defects hand-colored 28.5 x 40.5 cm. Two woodcut illustrations on one sheet. This is an excellent view of early British naval troops landing in Yokohama. It shows a busy landing at the go down with several small launches flying the Union Jack British Flag. The Japanese flag is flying over the go down and on a small skiff. The lower or second illustration is of three blind musicians. One plays the Koto Japanese harp another the Shamisen Japanese banjo while a third sings. These two sketches are nicely executed by the I.L.N.'s Special Artist in residency in Japan Charles Wirgman. Although there is no signature on either of these drawings Wirgman never signed his work. . unknown
London 1864 I.L.N. Single sheet two woodcut engravings very good 28.5 x 40.5 cm. with captions. This is an excellent example from early Japan. The first image shows a group of fourteen Samurai guards most hold lanterns and all have two swords in their sash. They wear the usual flat straw hats Haori jackets and Zori sandals. The second is a stunning snow-capped view of Mt. Fuji. Both are signed in block by M. Jackson. Lovely views. . unknown

Then he boarded the small Japanese junk and was guided by a Yakunin Japanese official who wore two swords. The first at the top shows a Japanese Junk with five oarsmen and a passenger. London 1864 I.L.N. A single sheet with 2 woodcut engravings very good 28.5 x 40.5 cm. ample text below each plate. These are excellent early examples of Japanese in native costume of the period. The first shows a girl seated before her mirror using a brush to paint her lips. Her Kimono is wide open from the shoulders down. The second show two Samurai one holds a Tatami drum the other holds a fan and bothwear a theatrical hat. One has a Kimono with his clan's Mon insignia and has a long sword in his belt. Both are dressed in elaborate Kimono. Illustrated by the I.L.N's special artist Charles Wirgman. . unknown

The first shows a panoramic of two American flags flying over the U.S. Consulate at Yokohama along the quay with several sloops at anchor in the bay most of which are English. The second is a panoramic view of the great city of Jeddo Tokyo. With accompanying articles below: SCENES IN JAPAN-THE CITY OF JEDDO AND THE BRITISH FLEET AT YOKOHAMA. The article discuss the British squadron held in readiness for the Shimonoseki affair to assist Sir Rutherford Alcock. The upper illustration shows a group of Chinese lined up to receive a catty of dry rice. According to the text some 700 to 800 people line up three times a week for rice. The sket- ch shows a few of the 599 blind alone who lined up. The 2nd. shows a street procession of a thief being beaten with the gong man leading the wayi. SCARCE A fascinating group of illustrations of the British in For- mosa. This set was swritten and drawn around the activities of Edmund H. Grimani who resided for several months at Takao Formosa and was I.L.N's artist and reporter. These prints documents his travel & journey around Formosa along with some British colleagues who rode horses were a number of local coolies who carried supplies. They were charged by a water-buffalo along with local coolies struggled down steep mountains aborigine Formosan natives try on English- men's clothes and hat other natives check the muscles of these foreiginers. Fording great and powerful rivers visit to Pephuan village of Bankimsing near a Spahish missionary home. Some of the caption tiles are: "A Hazardouos Descent; Pursed by Water-Buffaloes; Arrival & Farewll at Bankimsing; In a Bamboo Forest; Halt on the Road; Welcome by an old Chi- nese Friend; Flight of Savage Chief and his tribe; Crossing the Lagoon in Gale; Tumbling in the Quicksand; Canoeing at Takow; A savage chief returning with reinforcements; First signt of an aboriginal savage; and Quaint performance at a savage entertainment."
