This is an excellent and early news paper report on Japan. . The text continues from a previous page not included. The balance of the text covers Nagasaki and the 'striking contrast to everything Chinese.' With half page illustration of "THE BAY OF NAGASAKI JAPAN" Showing Deshima Island home of the Dutch Factory. . With article titles: CUSTOMS OF THE JAPANESE-EAGER FOR KNOWLEDGE; JAPANESE PALACES; THE TREATY WITH JAPAN; THE LORD MAYOR'S COACH. . This fine example shows the revered Mt. Fuji in a foreign- drawn representation of the fabled mountains. Also below that is an excellent bird's-view of Nagasaki and Deshima with several foreign ships at anchor. . The treaty mentioned in the text covers the opening of Japan to the British in the next year on the first of July 1859 some 6 years after the American Commodore Perry opened Japan to America in 1854. . R A R E This contains two engravings each from a slightly different perspective from the bluff overlooking the new village and of the harbor. The harbor has many sailing sloops at anchor with new construction along the riverbank. Nicely executed. The back side of the sheet contains an article on Yokohama Japan. Folio 16" x 11 1/2" laminated mint green colored boards illustrated. Binding with some chips and wear at extremities small bookplate on front pastedown endpaper torn a couple of other pages with minor tears not collated but a couple of issues with a page missing generally the contents seem complete slight aging; otherwise very good. This is a collection of the Illustrated London News that was probably used to promote subscriptions. The date on the tile page indicates 1852 but the actual issues seem to run from December 7 1844 to July 5 1845. This volume contains about twenty issues during that period but does not include every issue. In some of these promotional collections some issues are reprinted but the reprints are from 1852. A couple of pages are missing but the issues seem mostly complete. This volume was put out about ten years after the Illustrated London News began publication in May 1842. It contains some very interesting news and illustrations including an illustration of an 'electric telegraph' in the April12 1845 issue a very young Queen Victoria and Prince Albert engraving at a costume ball in the June 7 1845 issue and a tennis match in the February 1 1845 issue. books

This volume contains some of the earlier issues of this publication which began in May 1842. It contains some interesting news and illustrations including a small engraving of a cricket match p.164 an article on prison reform October 22 1842 and catching a whale p. 388. books
