Il volume si propone di approfondire alcuni temi fondamentali della filosofia di Emmanuel Levinas, con particolare riferimento alla questione della sensibilità, che ha assunto notevole rilevanza nel dibattito fenomenologico contemporaneo. La riflessione levinasiana sull’alterità è stata oggetto di ampie analisi, ma non è stata ancora adeguatamente valorizzata la sua rivisitazione della soggettività in termini di sensibilità e passività, sviluppata soprattutto in Autrement qu'être e negli scritti tardi. Levinas individua l’origine della significazione etica nel sentire del soggetto, che avverte una responsabilità alla quale non può sottrarsi: la prossimità dell’altro ridesta infatti il trauma che ha colpito il soggetto nella «diacronia», in un tempo non recuperabile dalla coscienza.
