The Union Benevolent Association was established in 1831 to provide assistance to Philadelphia residents by lending stoves to help heat their homes during a harsh winter along with wood and coal. The intention was to help the "worthy poor" without regard for religion or race. The activities of the organization have evolved since 1831; today it provides grants to projects to fight poverty. This report contains a list of people who contributed to the Union Benevolent Association for the previous year with the amount given as well as detailed data about the people with whom the association had worked. The male officers of the Association are listed; none of the members of the Ladies' Board of Managers are named although the majority of the report is theirs. Scarce. Contains amusing descriptions of restaurants cafes and theaters; parks monuments cemeteries and catacombs; cultural and educational institutions; horse races and festivals; and street life with the types of people to be seen: students artists' models vendors socialists anarchists gamblers and criminals. In general the section on Paris presents the fascinating and slightly scandalous world first dramatised for the world in Puccini's La Boh�me. Parker had headed Britain's propaganda efforts in the United States since 1914. Eight days after Parker gave this book to the Washington County Historical Society President Woodrow Wilson severed diplomatic ties with Germany and Parker resigned as head of propaganda in the United States feeling that his work was done. Shelf number in ink at head of front cover and front free endpaper. Additonal bookplate for Washington County Historical Society on back fixed endpaper. The documents reproduced here relate to Germany deporting over 20000 civilian women and teenagers from Lille and environs and making them into forced agricultural laborers in April 1916. Joseph Vinton Follansbee Sappington Md. was a member of class of the 1846 but did not graduate. The May 1844 issue is of particular interest because it contains a poem by Fanny Kemble "Lines Written at Night"; The Legal Wrongs of Women by an anonymous woman; and Female Novelists by W. A. Jones. It also includes book reviews of several works on the death penalty. The March 1840 issue contains an article about Bacon's Rebellion based on material in the first two volumes of Peter Force's Tracts and Other Papers Relating Principally to the Origin Settlement and Progress of the Colonies in North America. The Museum includes biography travel poetry and parts of Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens; Zicci by Edward Bulwer Lytton; and The Narrative of John Ward Gibson by Charles Whitehead as well as shorter works of fiction. Godey's contains fashion and architectural plates and music I Pray for Thee at Nightfall by Carl Linley and arranged for piano by W.J. Wetmore M.D.; Leaflets of Memory words by D.W. Belisle music by James Piper. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicates that the volume was given to the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College by Charles Albright of Berks County Pa. Small oval label at head of spine with handwritten number. Charles Albright 1830-1880 attended Dickinson College; passed the bar in 1852; led a group of anti-slavery settlers to Kansas in 1854; was a delegate to the 1860 Republican National Convention; was commissioned a major with the 132nd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in 1862; was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General in charge of the 202nd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in 1865 which guarded the Manassas Gap railway in Virginia; and elected to Congress in 1872. The Standard Diary 1920 of woman in western Philadelphia suburbs training to be kindergarten teacher
Cambridge Mass: The Standard Diary Co 1919. Hardcover. Very Good. approx. 100 p.: illustrations; 10 cm. Brown-red cloth with gilt-stamped emblem with "Standard Diary No. 512" on front. All page edges gilt. Illustrated title page. First pages contain miscellaneous information tides interest holidays astrology etc. The remainder are ruled calendar pages for 1920 with three days per page. Filled in by a young woman who unfortunately did not fill in the identification page. Her birthday was June 21 and she probably lived in the western Philadelphia suburbs. She went out with Edwin Sweeten frequently; in Jan. 1920 she began giving music lessons; and her friend Anna Boyd died on May 16 1920. She saw a Dr. Ring regularly for several months; was training to be a kindergarten teacher lectures and observation noted; frequently went to Cynwyd to dance presumably Bala Cynwyd; and attended Chautauqua the last week in July 1920. Buffalo N.Y.: Dr. Pierce's Clinic 1930. Paperback. Very Good -. 32 p.: illustrations; 19 cm. Stapled wrapper with continuous illustration of pirates in orange and black. Dr. Ray Vaughn Pierce 1840-1914 practiced medicine in Pennsylvania before moving in 1867 to Buffalo where he began producing patent medicines many containing opium. Not surprisingly he opposed the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. Dr. Pierce's Clinic continued producing patent medicines after his death in 1914. This almanac consists primarily of advertisements and testimonials aimed at women emphasizing that good health is essential for beauty and happiness. In Very Good- Condition: wrapper is partially separated along spine; a round hole at the head of the spine where the former owner hung it up; "Carmel" written on back wrapper; front wrapper is lightly soiled; otherwise clean and tight.
