WOMEN and PROVENANCE. Chenevard Hepsibah C. owner.
Nonce collection of American imprints of popular English plays with the repeated ownership markings throughout of Hartford Conn. resident H. C. Chevenard.
V. p.: v. p. 1795-1803. 5 vols bound in 1 contemporary calf 6.13 x 4.25 inches 84; 60; 76; 5-72; 76 pages.

A handsome little sammelband of popular English plays from the library of Heppy Chenevard these all seemingly here repurposed for American audiences including one by George Colman the Younger for which copyright has been granted to the Baltimore publisher and another published "as performed at the Boston Theatre with universal applause."

This volume includes multiple examples of an ink ownership stencil for H. C. Chenevard with a few scattered ink ownership signatures as well—including two instance of the signatues as Heppy Chenevard pointing toward ownership of this volume by Hepsibah/Hepzibah C. Chenevard ca. 1780-1859 of Hartford Conn. the unmarried daughter of Capt. John Chenevard and a member of an old Hartford family; she is listed in directories and city records as resident at 121 Main St. in Hartford until her death in 1859 when "the old Chenevard place" was sold and razed for the planned construction of a new Universalist church building.

The volumes here collected are:

Coleman sic for Colman George the younger. John Bull; or An Englishman's Fire-Side. Baltimore: Printed by John Butler for Andrew Price 1803. American Imprints 3988.

Lillo George. The London Merchant; or The History of George Barnwell . . . Boston: Printed at the Apollo Press by Belknap and Hally 1793. Bristol B8398.

Holcroft Thomas. The Deserted Daughter: A Comedy . . . as Performed at the Boston Theatre with Universal Applause. Boston: Printed for William P. Blake at the Boston Bookstore 1795. Evans 28847.

Goldsmith Oliver. She Stoops to Conquer. An imperfect copy of an unknown edition bound here without the first two leaves and without the epilogue.

Allingham John Till. The Marriage Promise: A Comedy in Five Acts . . . Philadelphia: Published by John Conrad & Co. et al. H. Maxwell Printer 1803. American Imprints 3653.

Somewhat rubbed stained foxed in spots occasionally trimmed a bit close; with the noted imperfections a good copy of an interesting example of early American literary taste with a New England woman's provenance. WOMEN Anonymous
The Confession of a Rebellious Wife
Boston: Small Maynard & Co 1910. First edition. Hardcover. A scarce American feminist novel originally published also anonymously in the American Magazine for July 1909. A contemporary reviewer noted of this work: "the writer passes from idealizing a lover whom she fancies she understands to a state of mind in which her strongest feelings are repulsion for him and determination that their son shall never grow up to be 'like him and to dwarf some woman's life and his own.' . the situation described is so frequently observed that one can but applaud the writer's wisdom in omitting her name from the title-page." Our attempts to attribute authorship have indeed proved fruitless. In its narrative arc progressing from complacency to disgust the book bears a tantalizing resemblance to Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wall Paper" published ten years earlier. In any case a quite scarce work; absent from commerce; OCLC locates eleven copies only; not in Smith Collection. SMITH American Fiction 1901-1925 C-663. 12mo. Original red cloth boards; gilt titles; 64pp. Slight flaking to cover gilt; contemporary gift inscription; Very Good. Small, Maynard & Co hardcover

Women at Oxford Admission of Women
Admission of Women to Oxford University- Archive 50 Very Rare Documents 1896
Women at Oxford. Archive of papers recording the great debate between the Association for promoting the Education of Women AEW at Oxford and the faculty and students who opposed their entrance. 1895-1896. Total of 50 separate documents ranging from printed single page letters through bound booklets. The majority of these documents are known to exist only in one single additional copy held by the University of Oxford; and several of the papers are not noted to be included even within Oxford's collection as per OCLC worldcat.

This collection of papers is ripe for scholarly research. Forming a cohesive archive of 50 documents it includes synopses of the contents and resolution of meetings of the AEW arguments concerning various aspects of the question of inclusion of women at Oxford and advice for members concerning upcoming resolutions put to vote. The AEW was founded in 1873 to gain the full educational enfranchisement of women at Oxford who had actually been attending classes in small numbers by special permission since 1866. Despite vigorous support for the cause Oxford maintained as nearly the last hold-out against coeducation among British Universities not allowing women to gain the full B.A. degree until 1920. Some documents of the archive include "The Due Recognition of Women by the University of Oxford" 1896; "A Brief History of the Proposal to Admit Women to Degrees at Cambridge in 1887-8" by Thomas Case 1896; "The Value of a Genuine Diploma"; and "The B.A. Degree for Women." Full list available upon request. Individual pages or booklets sizes vary. Some hole-punched a few corner tears light edge soiling and toning. Some stamped with circular stamp "Board of Education Library"; most with numerical markers in red to upper right corner of documents. All in good condition and clearly legible. Full of sagacity and wit this archive evidences the reasoned support of women's right to the diploma over twenty years before it was finally granted.

A partial List of Publications and some OCLC Worldcat search results: "most" are held only at Oxford University and no other copies at any institutions or library worldwide. 4 items had no copies at any Liabraries as per OCLC not even Oxford.
